I also have an issue with other noises messing up my hearing. The kiosk is a win-win for me. If I just want a coffee, I will order it at the counter. I started eating ramen in the late 1960's or early 1970's and didn't know there were so many ways to enjoy them until 1976 when I did my first tour in South Korea. Oh, my taste buds had an eye opening experience. Now I put vegetables, meat in mine plus an egg. I just can't eat them plain anymore... My stepsister called one day while I was eating a bowl and said something about the noise I was making and I quickly explained that's how they're supposed to be eaten. She said it was rude and I told her in a number of cultures it'd be rude to not slurp or make noise. She also served in the Army but never went overseas. I also told her I'm not going to stop eating or enjoying what I'm eating for her. And yes, I do eat mine with chopsticks.

Its educational as ramen enthusiast from UK, who wasnt sure what they have been doing for last 15 years was quite right. Not really questioned it too much before, apart from trying to get slurping right in the beginning. I havent had ramen for a while too, due to bad fincances and ill health and it being mid-priced here, will be able to get some soon. I'm kind of mind-blown that they allow you to order additional noodles for the remaining broth. In America, they would definitely just make you order a whole new bowl if you were still hungry. If I ever have the pleasure of visiting Japan, I would get fat because I would never just drink the remaining broth. I would just be like, "More noodles please!" until the broth was gone. 😂

Very interesting. We Americans are so sheltered. Eating is something we all have in common. It’s cool to discover how we all enjoy it.

in germany Düsseldorf is a big street with lots of japan Ramen shops and most ppl there eat it with no slurping, its funny when i eat there and make slurping noises. Last time i orderes a Butatama its with tonkotus and ordered with tripple ramen noodles :D so delicious

I know about Düsseldorf because I like football ⚽️ 🇩🇪Germany allowed Japanese football association to build a facility there.🇯🇵 We appreciate that. I heard the city had the largest population of Japanese in Europe 😳

At university in 1970, my Thai roommate had just got back from an around-the-world trip (wealthy family) and the most memorable thing was his experience at a Tokyo restaurant. He said he almost couldn't eat with all the slurping which was so at odds with his Thai culture. This was the first I'd heard of the Japanese being noisy eaters.

Slurping allows you to eat it hot. Slurping also aerates the noodles and broth which intensifying the flavor. Otherwise, you can let it sit and cool down that would make the noodles soggy.

It’s weird, but I had a lot of ramen when I visited Japan, but the one I remember the most is the ichiran ramen, not sure if it was because of the unique atmosphere and or the deliciousness of the ramen \. I. Always think of ichiran!!!!! I an American Japanese from Hawaii and I don’t slurp but I tried, but it’s not that easy!!! Need to practice!!!!

Nice to hear American Japanese memories of staying in Japan 👍 It’s difficult to try something new that you’ve been told not to do before. Yeah it needs practice. Enjoy it :)

There’s this amazing ramen shop down the road and I always get the tonkotsu. As a western hispanic, this slurping is also what I do when I eat noodles! :)) I love this video

Yes Respect the culture. I guess its similar with Filipinos or Asian in general that eat with their hands. There is a satisfying feeling when you put the rice in your mouth using your bare hands almost like you’re slurping it, and there is a sound. It’s hearty eating with a hearty meal ❤

Lovely video. This makes me want to enjoy a bowl of noodles right now with my daughter in law to be, who is Japanese. Unfortunately, she is far away on the other side of my country right now, but next visit I think it will be seafood noodles! I love the little separate eating stations. And the serving routine. In fact, I wish I could be at this place right now eating noodles. Thank you for sharing this.

Slurping and smacking - chewing with the mouth open - is repulsive to me. One of my clients does it and I leave the room before he starts to eat. Talking while eating is not okay either. I don't want to see chewed up food in a person's mouth and I don't want to see it fly across the table. Saying "thank you" works for me.

How lucky I am that I stumbled upon this site. I like to see how and what people from different countries eat. I lived in Malaysia and there I learned the polite and respectful way to eat food. Although I did comment on the tea we drank only to be told that it was my mother in law’s special tea which she brought to the restaurant. A big faux pas.
