I don’t think this feat gets the appreciation it deserves. For Ichiro to maintain a .372 batting average in a season in which he had 704 official at bats is the absolute definition of consistency. What makes it more impressive, is that he broke the record in an era where pitching is as good as it has ever been. I think it’s as impressive as Ted Williams’ 1941 mark of .406 because Ichiro had 250 more at bats, which is a much higher sample size. This is one of the most impressive records in MLB history.

Watching sports in school was always the best lol. Here in the UK, during the world cup in Japan and Korea in 2002, the matches were during the middle of the school day, usually the morning (because they were in the evening over there, cos of time zone differences). So we'd just skip the whole lesson and just watch football on the TV. The non-football fans enjoyed it too because whenever you got to watch anything on TV in a lesson, even if it was some science documentary or something, it was infinitely more interesting than it would be if you watched the same thing at home. It just meant you could turn off your brain a bit.

I love that one time when Ichiro was miles away at the edge of the field and a runner was running to 3rd base I think it was, and with no other player would this have even been a concern, but Ichiro had a heat seeking rocket launcher on his shoulder and threw it faster than the camera could keep up with it, practically, and was so accurate it went through the middle of 3rd base. Never seen anything like it. And then in the interview after the game Ichiro said "why did he run when I was going to throw him out?“. Cos yeah any other player may not even have been able to throw it that far let alone it be a 100 mph rocket that is PERFECTLY accurate, not even just very very very very accurate, no it was literally perfect. Any baseball player would have thought that'd be an easy safe run to 3rd base, because facing any player other Ichiro it _WOULD_ have been an easy safe run to 3rd base.

I love Ichiro for a lot of reasons, but one thing I think gets overlooked is what his success said about international baseball at the time. If Ichiro had been brought up in America he might never have made it to MLB. He'd have possibly been written off at a young age as being too short, his swing would have been seen as too unorthodox, and he would have faced barriers all along the way. His success illustrated that all the received wisdom at the time in MLB about what a baseball player looked like was wrong. His Japanese upbringing is fundamentally one of the things that made him great and it changed a lot of attitudes (which at the time were dismissive in some cases about the quality of other baseball development systems outside North America). It's something that's made the quality of the sport stronger overall and Ichiro was a big part of that. I won't say he was quite on the level of Jackie Robinson when it came to breaking barriers, that would be wrong, but on a smaller level it's had a similar kind of effect in the way it changed views. It showed that the American approach to baseball has its strengths, but it wasn't the only way to have success.

Remember, George Sisler set the record of 257 in 1920, so Ichiro broke a record that had been in place for 84 years. The second largest "modern" (post WWII) hit total is 242, accomplished by - you guessed it - Ichiro as well in 2001 and is the 10th best hit season all time. The next is Wade Boggs in 1885 (240, 12th all time). Only 12 players have hit 240 or more in a single season. Ichiro and Sisler are the only ones to do it twice. Pete Rose's top season was 230 in 1973.

This 262 will never be broken, today's players if they get a sprain are out for weeks and with the pitching rotations it's harder for even the best hitters to reach 200 hits. This is like Ty Cobbs' win record which won't ever be touched.

There was great respect shown in BOTH directions; both Ichiro and Sisler’s family were class acts. I am sure that George Sisler’s family had some mixed feelings, but in the end it helped people to remember a ballplayer from the long past who was mostly forgotten.

I remember being there with my pops. I was eight years old and didn’t really comprehend what had just happened. The M’s are a fun team. Always have been. I hope I’m not old enough to have a heart attack the day they finally win a World Series.

An amazing moment from an otherwise terrible season for the M's. Pinella jumped ship prior to the season and the last piece of the near decade long run of successful Mariner's teams officially ended when Edgar retired at the end of the season. Beginning in 1999, each season saw the depature of integral parts of the franchise: Griff Jr., followed by A-Rod in 2000, Buhner in '01, etc. 14 years later and Seattle has yet to revive the success from the "Glory Days".

I'd argue it started a year before, in 1998 when Randy Johnson left. He was the best pitcher in MLB at the time. Led arizona to a world series in 4 years of existence. That's the start of it, when he left

Ichiro may be the best pure hitter of a baseball in history. Can you imagine if he had all 9 of his japanese professional years here in the states? 1. We play more games in the USA 2. Japanese top pure hitters just get the normal hits that our MLB players get all the time; slap shots up the middle, and well aimed gappers. 3. If Ichiro had been in MLB since 1993 he would have over 4000 hits easily. I mean, his first year facing the best pitchers in the world, he hit 242 times that year. Imagine even two more years like that out of those 9!!!! 4. He is still hitting .270- .280 even now as a washed up 41-42 Yr old has - been. EVEN THE SHELL IS IMPRESSIVE

i wouldn't say the best pure hitter due to the fact his speed allowed him to beat out so many small dribblers that would normally be outs, but that's what made him special.
