Vocabulary knowledge and recording technique Date: 17.02.2024 1) watch a video or read a text 2) check the duration (max 10 min), set a timer while reading 3) highlight the specific vocabulary 4) speak about the audio or the text and summarize the things that you listened/read to 5) record yourself while speaking and then check the grammar, intonation and accent. 6) record yourself several times for the perfect version. Try to speak fluently and accurately with no mistakes and delays.

This advice seems contradictory: one cannot focus on both fluency and accuracy at the same time - as the first kills th second one🤗 Then, "try to" implies conscious effort, meanwhile fluency is a quality that with regular practice, self-confidence and and exciting meaning to convey👍 + some reasonable negligence to accuracy! As focus on accuracy would unavoidably slow down your speech🤷♀️

I think youtube is reading my mind, because I came across with this video that talks about the topic, which is the biggest concern for me lately. I am a graduate student in the US and was studing english for 20 years, but still feel like I am not speaking well enough, can’t express my thoughts as I wanted them to sound. Even writing this message is a struggle for me, cuz I can’t deliver my message in a perfect way that I want it to be. I am using chatgpt for writing and everytime I am amazed how perfectly it conveyed my message and I wish to reach that level. Additionally, I totally agree with you about how our inability to express our thoughts in our mother tongue, finding right answers in our everyday conversations can impose barriers in speaking in a foregn language. I am struggling with communication and find it challenging to articulate my thoughts (chatgpt helped with this). Also, I am amazed how you talk perfectly so many languages 😍 good luck with your endeavors and thank you for your tips

A helpful listening + speaking exercise: Date: 17.02.2024 1) watch a short random video (preferably 1 min long) 2) look at the new words, study them, and understand the general idea (you can look at the translation if needed) 3) mute the video, read subtitles out loud and try to imitate the speaker's intonation and accent 4) record yourself while speaking (you need another device for that). I have another phone, if you don't have it you can use a phone and a computer for that 5) turn on the sound of the video, watch it again and listen to the voice recording of yours, check the similarity and the level of imitation (melody, intonation, stress). 6) If the recording vary, then record again and try to makes it perfect.

I‘m really impressed by your speaking in Russian, especially when I heard you first time. it’s amazing how you speak without accent. Thanks Iclal for this video, you confirmed my opinion about the necessary of retelling about what you read. And I would add about recording yourself, it really works, I have been recorded myself only 3 times and I feel how words is found easily and my speech flows smoothly. But I can’t still reproduce rhythms, intonation and I hope in the nearest future to fix it.

Oh my god you just saved me years of my life. I always HAAAATED courses, because theres just so much resources to interact with languages... and im excited about the cultures and sounds of the languages i like (russian, polish and german) so i really never am not interested or wanting to try reading something and listening to it. Courses just seem like the easiest way to kill my passion for language learning in the most cruel and boring way possible while focusing soooo much on grammar as if its some sort of amusement park (more like boredom park!!) That you just go through this grammar bit once, and then the next one and are somehow expected to become fluent. Hell naaaah. Im never taking a course again, im just gonna follow my interests and take proficiency tests at most (if much!). Thanks for another life changing video!

I'm an introvert who hates phone calls too, but I'm okay with video calls. I realize that with video calls you might become too dependent on body language and other visual cues when trying to understand the other person (and making yourself understood). Phone calls require stronger listening and speaking skills, which makes it a lot more challenging.
