I’ve played The Last Guardian by Fumito Ueda in the period of its release. Didn’t like it. It didn’t feel polished, engaging and captivating. Then I played the remake of Shadow of the Colossus remake on PS4. I was impressed. It controlled well, had different colossuses to destroy and the ending was quite shocking. Now I got to play Ico. That’s where The Last Guardian came from. It feels the same way only keeping in mind that Ico was released in 2001 (the best year for gaming industry), and yes, sometimes I was frustrated by camera and controls, in general I didn’t think I wasted my time in this game. It feels unusual, unique. With no used elements of a traditional game: no radar, no health or stamina indicator, very few dialogues and straightforward details about the world and the plot, but that’s what keeps the interest. Immersion. You feel as if you’re the hero of this game and you want to help our couple to live happily ever after. And I couldn’t help but route for them. Moreover in time Jorda becomes more confident and she as the game flows can climb up without our help unlike the beginning. Plus unusual but pleasant puzzles, the memorable and grandiose (fictional but real at the same time) world, and rare but accurate music. I can only imagine what gamers felt in 2001, their emotions were a lot more stronger and I envy them. Maybe one day I’ll play original Shadow of the Colossus on PS2.
