Location and antenna is the key worked the world on 5 watts from the uk but always have use used quarter wave vertical at the beach. Been licensed for around 4 years now with 19k contacts all on 5 or 10 watts. If in the woods lots of radials is a must.

Hey. I am from Canada. So I know about cold. For electronic gear like pro camera and radio stuff.... Leave it in the bag or case when you get home. Open it after the whole thing warns up. That way, little to no condensate forms in and on the gear. I wait up to 6 hours depending on the temperature differential. Cheers. VE1RPX

Well, what a fascinating video and great timing…my new 28 days old X6100 became a brick with no lights,,,today I turn it on, pressed ATT into a Comet U4 vertical on 10M and did the usual relay click-click-click, and ended this time with a “CLACK” sound turning off and black! It never came on again.,,clearly a big short of some form! So, no fuse in sight and plenty of decal indicating forbidden to open! I thought was a good radio…so, I started the warranty process with the local dealer here in the US…will see where it goes! So far I’m off $670 and no radio plus $69 on a new cage to be nice with the radio! Makes me wonder why didn’t I forked more and went with the 705…Oh well…happy holidays ! Be safe..

Just picked up a 7300 for $500 at a consignment shop. Powers up amd transmit output verified on a meter. Next step- turning my sailboat’s backstay cable into an HF antenna.

This video is a year old now, and I just got an IC-705 myself. I do plan on doing SOTA and back woods hiking etc. But I'm finding there are a lot of small portable amplifiers out there so I'm thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to get my little guy to be transmitting 100 watts when I'm at home or mobile in my car.

Great video Mike! What about running a amplifier with the Icom 705? I bought the DIY599 PA500 amplifier it is the Expedition model it wasn’t cheap but it’s nice. It’s a 100 watt amplifier with a built in antenna tuner. It’s a sweet deal.

Thanks Ammed. Yeah I covered that towards the end. You certainly can and I have. I just think in his case already having a QRP radio it made more sense to get the 7300. That PA500 you have sure is nice though.

Mike there are two more options 1, K0PIR has developed a switch when you’re using an SDR receiver with your radio and 2, DX engineering has a phenomenal product-the RTR2 which is a RF sensing TR switch like the MFJ 1707 but built with DX engineering quality but comes with the DX engineering price

Now I will always remember your call sign, K murder. Thanks, really interesting video. You are correct with ham radio, once addicted you are in. I have the G90, and the X6100, and the FT 891. All so lots of antennas, the most important thing antennas!. My thinking is like yours. I think the 861 is totally the best bang fur the buck. See you next time.

Hi, I use two MFJ 1708s. One for VHF/UHF and another for HF. They connect to an SDRPlay device and work well. Now I can use my Linux box for waterfalls on ether HF or VHF/UHF depending on enabling SDR1 or SDR2 antennas in the software.
@TheDelizar
@TheDelizar Жыл бұрын
I also use the MFJ SDR switch. In my case it is with a 991a and an SDRplay-duo. In the use case in the video. You would need to use the Control input on the 1708 to disconnect the SDR from the Recieve antenna, since the Transmitter should not be connected to trigger the RF Sensing feature. Since I don't have a 7300 I'm not sure where the output for that is to trigger the 1708. Mark W6XYZ

I have 7300 and only portable now. in my carry case for my rig I put rice or descent pouch from amazon like the once that come in meds etc. put several in. replace after a month or so. I am in NY. most of the year sucks. temp change causing dew. solar works on some days. DC to DC charge LiFePO4 from car.8 amp powerworkx charger amazon sells as well . has power pole on it. doing fine on 20Ah battery but also have a 50 Ah and 190Ah for my outher camping needs. also for the 7300 and want receive antenna that MFJ TX/RX switch works fine. but their is a external SDR mod for the icom . video on you tube. gives you a SDR jack for receive. I never bothered. but is a safe way not to blow SDR receive, . want just a RX antenna and you have room make a traveling wave antenna. in one of the ARRL antenna books. 73's

Mike, you said "Two Birds Stoned at Once". What are you drinking Bud ???? I want some.....lol. Keep up the good work. I agree with 10 watts being enough in many cases. Don't forget, we are going into the best part of the sun spot cycle. When at it's lowest, 100 watts is marginal. I prefer to have more power available. Going portable, yes light weight and a very good antenna is the way to go. The antenna can help make up for the lower power.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Жыл бұрын
Yeah, 2 birds stoned at once. It's more efficient that way lol. And no, I would never drink Bud. I'm much more sophisticated than that. It's actually a quote from one of the greatest shows ever, Trailer Park Boys. Look em up. They're hilarious. Most of my ham radio life has been in the bottom of the sun cycle so it's super exciting for me to see the bands, especially the higher frequencies opening up consistently. I'm loving 17 and 10 meters now. 15 still isn't open much that I see for some reason, but it's so much fun playing around on bands that just weren't open until the last year or so. Up till now I was pretty much on 20 and 40 and that was it.

@@hamradiotube I was calling you "Bud", not saying you should drink that toilet water...lol Yes, getting to the height of the sun cycle is super exciting. I started my ham journey at the upward swing of the last sun cycle. It was amazing. Talking all over the world on 15, 17 meters and other bands that were pretty dead as the last cycle peak faded away. Just bought a Yaesu 891. Now I have a FT-450, 891, G-90 and 7300, so I'm pretty well set. And yes, a bunch of good antennas. Most home made, some commercial. 73 !

RFI TROUBLE!!! I SAW YOUR VIDEO ON YOUR RFI problem. What ever happened with that? I am having the same thing. I just this weekend used a Ultra Sonic Dish to VERIFY that one of two poles I pointed out to the power company is absolutely the cause. Unfortunately iver the couse of about eight weeks of this, the problem has become much more intermittent. Weather? Who knows? Probably. I fear they're going to be crappy about fixing this now as they may not be able to come out WHILE the RFI is happening. I did find a way to use my phine to record what the ultrasonic dish sees and hears. I'm just waiting on a cable to get sound into the phone. Did you get your RFI fixed?

There is a button on the IC-7300 that calls CQ for you?
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube Жыл бұрын
Well you have to set it up but yes. Menu > Voice > Rec/Set > Rec > Chose a channel> Hit record and record your CQ into the mic > Hit stop when done > Back out of menu, push the T button you recorded on. Long press to have it automatically repeat every 5 seconds. Push PTT or touch button on screen to stop. You do need an SD card installed in the radio to do so as well.
