What does "GPS Locked" mean?

The radios oscillator is locked to a frequency reference (10 MHz) that is disciplined by a GPS to high accuracy. The idea being that other stations who are also GPS locked are then all sharing the same frequency and are on the exact same frequency

The frequency expansion with 144Mhz-148Mhz is a bottomless cheek from Icom. I know a lot of people who don't buy the 9700 because of this. A device that is so expensive should have a better frequency range. Shame on you Icom.

Icom won’t do anything. Traditional slow Japanese company. The ic9710mark2G-Pro3 will arrive in 4-5 years. :(

Because it has been added in the f/w to synch with an external 10 MHz source. Without it you can do ft8 easily on 2 and 70; I at that time did not test (lack of stations) on 23. I feed the 9700 with a ref and tested it on all bands now with ft8. Hardly any shift in frequency. So yes. It has been fixed and not slow fixed at all. So the bottom line is: He's wrong and it has been fixed.

@@RoelandJansen If I understand the videos properly, it isn't completely fixed. With a 10MHz reference clock, there is still drift isn't there? The 9700 isn't phase locked to the external source, it is instead netted, which is slower to align and less accurate over time. I don't think we need the accuracy Rex wants, but it's a concern if some of the digital modes are still affected. Which 10MHz source are you using?

@@johnratcliffe6438 A Leo Bodnar gpsdo. Before we go into this "slow to align and less accurate" part -- what is your definition on it? For a very small group the drift *was* an issue but nowadays, with the 10 MHz ref, the drift is within about 1 or 2 Hz on 23. With a slightly different method and a LB ref, it can be made even better. Bottom line is that without I can ft8, wspr without issues. even with full power TX for minutes like wspr does. (ok, 1:50)
