Well during WW2 a lot of Hollywood stars served in someway. Even in the USA not only did everyone know someone who was serving in the war, the USA had major rations on just about everything. The only time American have been limited on what you can buy due to limits was during the energy crisis where you could wait hours to get 10 gallons of gas.

Not the same country, but during WWII my father flew C-47s dropping paratroopers in European combat zones. He was shot down in Holland and the Dutch Underground found him and helped get him back to the Allies. Dutch families, some with children, fed and sheltered him. His guides were young. They all risked their lives for one American pilot. I can't express my gratitude enough.

@user-lp1jw9bo5y When can you compare a world war against three major political powers who had designs on conquering as much of the planet as possible and yoking them under brutal dictatorships, and which forcibly rounded up and slaughtered millions of Jews and other "undesirable" population demographics in concentration camps, not to mention civilian populations, to a local... horrible and horrific... war between two countries that have a history of having a go at each other? Do you know anything about history? Our recent history? Because WWII was less than 100 years ago. Israel and Gaza's even more so. I'm guessing not. _You_ are able to make snide and sarcastic remarks because my father fought for you and made sure Americans stayed free, democratic, and had a voice in our government. Not split between Germany and Japan. Just from your remark, I know you'd never go into combat for your country. That's the kind of thing a coward says, and one who has no grasp of world politics or dynamics, either. But freedom of speech, yes? It's your right because of my dad, and I don't like or agree with the tone of your comment, but I believe in your right to make it. Even as ill-informed as it is. American troops are not in Israel. And, no, I would not be pleased to have my son fight for either Gaza or Israel. I would not be pleased for any American to do so. The stakes are not the same. I hope -- overly optimistically, obviously -- they're never the same. Go grab a history book. You need one. It repeats, you know.

A truly beautiful lady, inside & out. I've read a biography of her amazing life. It always seemed to me that even from such a young age, her life had been tinged with sorrow and saddness. Her experiences and memories of the War impacted her so deeply and she carried them through life. It is unfathomable to me what it must have been like growing up during such formative years with the tragic horrors of war. So remarkable she survived the depravations, especially knowing of her brave contributions in the Dutch resistance. Ms. Hepburn's efforts as a UNICEF Embassador for children of war torn countries, and victims of famine were truly heartfelt and ardent. You could see and hear the empathy in her eyes and passion in her voice as she advocated for the most innocent victims. It was not an act because she had personally experienced the same terrible conditions. Her young heart was able to preserve her love of dance, music, and art throughout her life. So many marvelous performances throughout her stellar acting career; Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, Charade, Wait Until Dark, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Funny Face, and so many more. Every performance so rivveting and memorable. She became a Hollywood Icon, but I always remember her as that selfless, brave, and heroric young girl fighting for survival and freedom. Thank you, Ms. Hepburn. God bless you. I pray you found peace and solace for eternity. 🙏💖✨

My wife's grandma was in German occupied France during these blackouts. She opened the upstairs window with shutter as a 15yo one night, and her father knocked her clean out as the Nazis shot at her open window until the family shut it. Can still see some if the bullet holes to this day, as it was the towns old original train station depot bedore the war. Amazing the sacrifices people/kids made during that period.

I think current Hollywood does have many wonderful, increadibly talented ladies, but ones like Hepburn are only born out of the kind of adversity that most don't face anymore. Both a star and a genuinely superb human being.

We have a local woman who was a girl in the Netherlands during the war. Always at Veterans Day events. During our Honor Flights she would come to the gathering and thank every veteran and shake their hand- not explaining why she did it I told the veteran I was assigned to, what her background was.

Thank you for posting this. The Dutch often are blamed for not doing anything against the Germans in WW2. The fact is that the allies did't trust the Dutch resistance and the Dutch resistance didnt trustthe allies. This was greatly caused by the German "England Spiel" (England Game) caused by the infiltration of Germans in the captured British spies and failing to find the hidden "I am caught" messages from those spies. Much too late the British noted there mistake but the damage was already done and a lot of resistance (fighter) lost their lives. Glad Audrey made it, though. As did my grand dad and mom.

Not only was she a graceful dancer and actress but she was a woman who fought for the rights of others no matter of race or religion. The most profound memories I have of her, as a kid and teen is how she as how she fought for children and hunger . I see commercials of her pleading to others and the UN to help the children

It wasn't just in Europe this happened with the black evenings. My mother was 10 years old in 1943. She's told me stories of pulling down the black roll type shades at night in Seattle for fear of the Japanese bombing us like they did at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
