About 25 years ago, I wrote to Lauren Bacall and 2 other actresses, requesting autographs. I included an 8x10 photo and a SASE. Of the three, Bacall was the one I least expected to respond. I was overjoyed when I received Bacall's signed photo exactly 2 weeks later. It was the fastest response I had ever received in sending fan mail. Of the other two, 1 of them signed and returned my photo a few months later and the 3rd one never responded.

Many years ago i was head pianist at the jonathan club,i was playing at the beach club when i saw lauren bacall out of the corner of my eye,i immediately started playing as time goes by like in the movies in that 30s style. My mom worked at Universal as one of a few assistants to Lew Wasserman, Bogart's manager. She told me an insider story. Lauren and Bogart would go to Ciro's regularly. There was another well known actor more her age that kept trying to flirt with her. She got tired of his advances. So the next time she put on a "strap on" , and when he tried to feel her up, and he reached it, she cooly said "Are you ready for this". 😂 That scared him off. Don't know if true or not, and my mom is gone. She had many other insider stories. Hooray for Hollywood.

I started writing to movie stars back in the early fifties when I was a young teenager. Back then celebrities were very appreciative of their fans and fan letters. I have an album full of autographed photos. In later years I wrote a letter to Gene Tierney ( she was quite ill at this time) telling her how much I loved her movies especially The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. About a week later I received a card thanking me and or course her signature. She died ten days later. I hold this as a very special place in my album and my heart!

I admired her striking looks and acting abilities in classic films. I felt her pain for her loss, because she truly loved Humphrey Bogart, father of her children. Then I saw her on « The Mirrow has Two Faces », by Barbra Streisand. Her performance there, at her age, was excellent. What is beauty? How worth is it without capacity for depth and interpretation? I saw her once again at Harry’s Bar in Venice and she was just as I imagined: just as beautiful and ageless, forever ✨

I truly admired her, even when changing my first name (hated my birth name) to Lauren. Then I found out that when Bogey was dying in great pain, she was spending her nights away from him with Frank Sinatra. She didn’t have the class to be very discreet, she was photographed with Sinatra repeatedly on the town enjoying herself while Bogey , confined to bed dying, would call for “Baby” his name for her. A classy lady? I guess that depends on your morals and values.

My father's cousin used to work around Hollywood studios with his parents. He was the same age as Lauren Bacall, and he claimed that his mother tried to arrange a date for him with Lauren when she first showed up at the Warner Bros. studio, before she was famous. He said that he refused the date because she was too skinny! I am not sure whether to believe this story, but it made a good yarn because nobody could imagine refusing a date with Lauren Bacall! It was credible, because the ages, dates locations all match up!

I read her autobiography "By, Myself", twice, way back in the late 1980's (the book was published in 1978 I believe) when the book stores and libraries were overflowing with the autobiographies (both official and NOT so official) of the world greatest classic film stars (except they weren't called "classic films" back then because most of those stars were still very much alive and still working (Bacall still had about 7 years to go before her one and only Academic Award nominated role in the Barbara Striesand film The Mirror Has Two Faces for example, & Katherine Hepburn had just won her 4th Best Actress Academy Award 5 years earlier. Anyway I don't remember reading anything in her autobiography about an affair with Hawks. And she wasn't one to hide her dirty laundry, provided there was an A list name hanging on her line she could brag about. Yes she was beautiful, she was also 19 yo when she married Bogart, and she was 19 when she met him too! I do remember her writing about the grown up drama she got herself tangled in as her affair with Bogart gained momentum. His then wife Mayo, I think she was #2, and a raging alcoholic. Then again so was Bogart. His wife used to call Betty's house , smashed, in the middle of the night to warn her about Bogart and they'd hang up her phone would ring again and this time it would be Bogart, smashed, calling from a pay phone or the phone that belonged to the bar he was drinking in. He'd stay out all night just to get away from his wife. And Betty's mother would take the phone and tell everyone to "Go to bed! Betty's got to work in the morning!" Oh how exciting it must have been for her! "So what! I've got Humphrey Bogart all up in my shit! Who's the no talent now!?"

Lauren Bacall never had a crush on Bogart. She first saw him in Casablanca and even when they met, she said there was no fireworks or anything. It was only after he went to her dressing room to kiss her that she knew something was there. Read her autobiography. Bogart told Bacall during "The Big Sleep" production that he went back to his wife and she cried so much, she had to press ice on her face to lower the swelling before filming. Something also worth mentioning was that she was in acting school with Kirk Douglas but had to drop out because she didn't qualify for a scholarship, it only went to men.

My mother was a friend of both Betty Davis and Bacall. She knew Bacall from the early 50's until she left town - they were both young ladies in Hollywood married to actors, my mom worked for SAG. I can assure all you have this narrative exactly correct, except when the affair with Sinatra started. He was a total jerk to many women. The Big Sleep was a big hit but makes no sense. I think her best film was the Shootist - she was brilliant in it, Hollywood Royalty. Bacall was very Jewish - to her soul.

My dear my grandmother 19, married a 59yr old man with a thriving business and children that he became a widower when she died in childbirth.( my grandfather).They were actually a love and marriage of necessity in 1917.He died Choléra in 1922. With the 4 children,4 step children she remarried .Another love and necessity match.He died due to diabetes. Now with 11 children, no husband and in a struggling economy. She then ran a boarding house,worked as a cook. ALL HER CHILDREN GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, 4 Completed college. She did at age 67. She had no regrets and loved yearly Reunions/Home Comings with her elderly people Lumberjack Father in his 90's. I Celebrate my Ancestors and their loves,lives and struggles that led to my birth. Never Judge your Ancestors or Ancestors of others.

To her, being a star was more than a popularity contest.

Lauren Bacall took part in New Zealand's telethon in 1979. She completely won the country over by taking part in all manner of stunts to help raise money for charity. She was down-to-earth, funny, personable and just a wonderful person.

Love triangle. Sounds romantic. What if you said that two men were exploiting the youth and sexuality of a young woman for their own satisfaction and Bacall was compliant because she knew that that this was how the game was played and she was willing to be used in order to get what she wanted. Everyone was being exploited. Love triangle it was not.
