My backlog has reached critical mass and I'm just burned out on collecting. My collecting has slowed down and I have been focusing on actually playing what I have. I have definitely felt better about my collection because of it. When you make time for something, you can be able to play what you like. It's one of the reasons I made my channel so I can have a reason to go back and play all my games.

So here's the thing about our games; we have so many unopened, unfinished and unplayed Games that if I spent one full week on each of them, it would take over 20 years to do. It has come to be known as the 20 Year Dilemma, and i have no idea how it came to this, but it's not especially great-feeling. But, I'm making strides to at least play them all a little, with our livestreams being a thing nowadays... though the RPGs might be an issue!

Lol mao tse tung 20 years plan. I know what you mean. I have some unplayed yet because it’s so hard to get invested in a new game. There’s gotta be a perfect window to where you can start a game knowing you have some free/off time.

Man if I was to play ALL of my Steam library... I wouldn't need to buy a game for more than a decade, and that's dedicating a chunky part of the week to playing them (assuming I did and had the time).

It is hard to play games when you work full time, most of us are drained after work. However i finally picked up all the onimusha games on the ps2 and wow i really enjoyed part two! I do however buy games in bulk and let them sit, guilty as charged i have intentions to play them but i gotta learn to focus on one or two at a time.

I used to play all my games back then. Today I have a three years old kid, a wife and a full time job. When I come back home from work I am kind of wasted, but I still have to play with my kid, help my wife and then, after dinner, if my mindset is good, I can finally decide if relax watching a movie (or youtube, reading emails and so forth...), or play my games and reduce my backlog. :D It's tough.

I have a lot of games. Started buying games and keeping them over 20 years ago. Now, I'm married with 6 kids. I hadn't played many of my games, but my wife and kids do, so I get to watch them play games I hadn't. Many times they get interested in an older game they saw on youtube that I already own, so they don't have to go far to play it. I'm really not a fan of dlc. If or when most games become digital downloads only, I'll be out of collecting new games. At least, it will give me a chance to hit my backlog harder.

Someday the internet or the game service will cease to exist. I prefer physical over digital, though I like to play remasters like the recently remastered spyro, crash bandicoot, and Stubbs the Zombie and compare the remastered to the original. The Crash series is a very good remaster as little has changed except the graphics and better updated controls.

I don't play every game to completion but I can say I've played every game in my collection. Even if it's for a half hour, I've still spent time with every game I have. Usually I can tell in that first half hour if I want to put more time into the game or not. Obviously if it's a larger game like an RPG I'll spend more time at first to really give it a chance. I think it's wrong to collect just to own the games. Games are meant to be played.

I buy games because I want to play them, but then I get sidetracked a lot. I bought Witcher 3 on day 1 and then it's been collecting dust. I have good intentions, but there are so many good games it's hard to play them all. I've got a habit of starting a game and finishing it, but the problem with that is that I can get stuck on a game for too long. Sometimes you gotta just turn the game off and move on.

I love that you brought this up reggie I have this battle constant and not just with games alone tv series/movies, books, lord music. It seems like we never have enough time, and I collect digital more so than physical its nuts man I've just learned to focus on one game at a time and get them when they are cheap. I've never really collected super rare titles and stopped buying limited edition because of money and time. Still enjoy the classics so we can always fall back on those since the current state of gaming isnt that great and I focus on sales and deals now cause its hard out here for a pimp haha keep em coming reggie this is a topic that def should be revisited in the future.

I have accumulated nearly 300 games in the past twenty two years and I know thats not much considering what i could have now. Also know that there are ppl on YT and the gaming community that have way more. I buy the games i like and know that I'm going to play and beat eventually. I have played every game in my collection. Plan is to beat every game before I leave this word. I've only beat maybe three or four games out of those three hundred games. You pointed out that some people have family stuff, jobs and other things that come first and I have that and sometimes it can be a little frustrating. I usually game on the weekends to relive stress or just to make some progress on a game I haven't played in a while. I have slowed down on buying games for the time being since i nearly have all the games i want for now, thats not to say I'll see someone here talking or playing a new or classic game that will spark my interest. Great topic Reggie!

I like these older chill discussion topic videos with the retro gameplay footage and lofi/boombap instrumentals in the background. Very chill. Also I agree with all the stuff you are saying and I think most gamers who grew up during the era before online and DLC agree. I saw a poll on Spawn Wave a few days ago (Late 2021) where he asked people if they buy most of their games physically or digitally. The split was about 70% physical and 30% digital and there was like 44k votes which surprised me but people watching gaming content on KZbin may not be as representative as more casual players who just look at games more like Netflix these days. If they ever go completely digital that's where I draw the line. There's enough games already in existence and enough systems that I could never play all the games I wanted even in my somewhat humble catalogue of 250 games or so as I'm not a collector. If that Doomsday ever comes I will have my cartridges ready and systems to go with them. I remember thinking about preservation as a kid and saved ever dollar from my lemonade stand every day after school to buy multiple gameboy advance SP systems not just to play multiplayer and hook up to gamecube but I always wanted that insurance than if one ever broke I would have a backup system and also so I could carry one SP or Micro with me without worrying too much about if it got damaged. Physical games forever. I wish gamers would be more outspoken about topics like this and others you've brought up. So many people think about them but with digital people just click on instinct. So much of gaming marketing and sales these days is wrapped up in what's trending and it feeds off of the fear of missing out on whats hot at the moment rather than people having a unique taste in games and really looking forward to and cherishing the great games they have. I'll admit it's even rare for me to replay a game more than once these days except a select few excellent games or short games that are great experiences.

That doesn't mean I won't go out and buy the next Pokemon or Super Mario Bros. but now I don't really care too much about the next big game or what collectors are into that month. Thanks for the great content Reggie! Great moves! Keep it up! Proud of you.

Sometimes playing games everyday is tough things pop up and I think there is nothing wrong with putting something down and playing it later. I think games can become stagnant if you try to push through the entire game in one sitting. I have played every single game I have bought some of them are 50% complete while others are 75% complete either way I still get to play them. When I was younger saying you finished a game meant everything! but as you get older you learn to appreciate the little things about a game personally things games are an amalgamation of all mediums that has still plenty of time to grow.

Video game collecting can become overwhelming bro I feel you.I have a connection to each game I bought for a reason and sometimes there is just too many good ones that come out at once. Maybe when I retire I can put the work in I really want into them because it's my passion. I truly believe physical media is going away and I'm not the biggest fan of digital media even tho it's so convenient. But what a lost when it does fail. Even tho the recovery is going to seem a lot easier. I'm rambling (sorry) When we grow up we get better paying, longer hour jobs and a family to support, and gaming just becomes an outlet, an amazing outlet it is!

I’ve caught myself collecting too many games recently, specifically on Steam. I have far too many games that I haven’t played on there. For now on, I’m limiting myself to physical games only (when possible) and I’ve been working though playing all of my games this year. I find that I’m catching myself more often when I buy games now too. Usually I’ll refuse to buy a game knowing that I’ve got so many others to play, or that I have a few already started that I need to finish first.

I was having the exact issue that I was dealing with Reggie! I noticed I was buying all the games as they came out and not even playing them because I was playing a game that I picked up last month! Then I started to notice once I bought the game I would put on self and be like well I’m not going to play this until I beat the other game I’m currently playing. I was doing good for a while too I had a nice schedule but life doesn’t go as planned. Especially when in the military as you know and I kind of stopped playing then I noticed I had all the games that I bought on sale and things and from your hidden gems vids and I was like wow... why am I buying these if I am not playing them. So I agree only buy the games your interested in for real because time is a horrible thing to waste!

I have also recently noticed this with myself. I spend way too much time looking for game deals, buying them, then having them just sit on the shelf for ages. If i already don't have the time to play what i currently have, whats the point of continuing to buy random games that might not even see the console ? At this point, i am just collecting games and thats not what they are about. I have cut down big time in the past couple of months and am now very careful and selective of what i want and will actually PLAY. Going to sell the ones i know i will never play to put towards stuff i can actually get use out of. Great topic Reggie. Always keeping it real.

Hello, Reggie! Great video! I enjoy your content because you talk mostly about PlayStation. Plus, you're a huge survival-horror and "Tales of" fan, like me! I currently live in Japan so when I watch your episodes about obscure import games, I try to find it to play like "Chaos Break." It reminded me of another RE clone for PS1 called "Hard Edge" (renamed T.R.A.G. in the US) Anyway, I have a modest collection of PlayStation games from each generation I've collected over the years (maybe around 300 games) and my problem is that I play mostly JRPGs and survival-horror so it takes me months to finish a single JRPG. But I still buy more and it'll take me years to get through my backlog. So I decided to stop buying games until I play through the ones I already own.

I felt like my game library is growing fast. Probably 30% of it I haven’t played yet mostly on the Wii U. Now having the Switch I’m more careful on choosing games I play. Now a days I don’t just buy games blindly for the sake of having the new game. That’s why I’m thankful for real gamers who review games, not because it’s their job but because it’s their passion. I’m a gamer first but considering myself as a collector as well. I started collecting seriously on the PSP, 3DS and Wii, but after the Wii U’s downfall I just buy games On PS4 and Switch that I know I’ll enjoy and finish. In the last month I've switched gears radically from my old gaming habits. I used to play TONS of games like Overwatch, Destiny, etc. I definitely had fun. But it makes me think, that in ten years... those games won't matter at all. I'll essentially have nothing. Destiny already wore down my patients that I don't give a crap about the franchise, but with Overwatch, I've deleted it from my ps4. I pick up the comics or pops as a tribute to the memories I have of playing it, but it's time to move on and go back to all my story driven games I haven't played and finished. There's SO much great stuff in my backlog I need to get through. I still buy new games, usually to prevent having to spend more later. Like I just picked up a couple rarer 3ds RPGs, even though I won't even have one till next week, and likely won't play it till around August, simply because they were below MSRP, and I know they'll go up in value when I'm ready to play them in bit. I do feel like I'll be making great progress though now that I've cut out multiplayer. I'm just looking forward to digging into some great games!

Hey Reggie, What makes it hard for me to play my whole collection is work, then hanging out with my wife after work, but even more so for the new games coming out like on my Xbox One X, is if I want to play 1 of my newer unopened games I have to spend a good amount of time installing the disc onto my hard drive. I really miss the old days on my original xbox of just putting my disc in and playing the game immediately! Like you said most games have updates too, the games back when we were growing up were finished before they released them. The quality and standard of releasing a game now a days has gone way down. The 1 saving grace for new systems and games, is my Nintendo Switch I have 19 games already for it and I have logged at least a couple hours of each game because if the portability aspect! I'm also in a band and will be going on the road in the future and this system caters to that! Thank you for this video, it means a lot to me, knowing that I'm not alone in all this hoopla going on nowadays!

I do have a bad habit, especially now that 360, and PS3 games are being cleared, of going to gamestop and leaving with 7 games at a time. I noticed that it's not just working full time that prevents me from playing through most of my games, or just playing games in general, but doing youtube also prevents me a lot of times from just playing games to enjoy them. I always feel like I have to be playing something interesting, and tend to burn myself out of just playing through a game just to enjoy it. As I've gotten older through the years I've been pretty big on convenience. Convenience in gaming is crucial in my opinion due to the limited amount of free time there is to get through a backlog of games. So it's why, in terms of console gaming, I always go for backward compatible systems. It saves so much space, money, and time since on those systems you can play a multitude of games all in one at the same time. Also emulation I've also found to be extremely convenient as well whether it be on PC or on modded consoles. Also I know some folks don't like digital stuff and I understand that. But it really is super convenient. On my Xbox one to just have a digital collection ready to go and just game whether it be Xbox originals or 360 games. As well like on the vita with psp and ps1 titles. And PC gaming being all digital and having options on there like gog.com with drm free stuff it's awesome. But nice video Reggie nonetheless! You touched on some very important things here.

4:35 This is where I'm at in my life as well. I used to force myself to finish every single game I touched but recently, I'm making better choices of what's worth my time and making the decision to move on or keep going. I also took a hard look at my backlog and asked myself what I could live without playing through vs. what I couldn't. The third thing I'm doing is being more choosy about my purchases and if I buy a game that's fun enough to finish, I try to see it through before picking up something else.

The thing that sucks about buying new games, is that as an adult you have the money to purchase all the games you couldn’t as a kid... and it ain’t nothing to just buy a game off amazon or eBay. But it’s finding the time to commit to investing to a new game that’s hard. So your new game collection grows faster than your opportunities to actually play them. That’s the problem I encountered, which is why I temporarily stopped shopping for games.

DLC ruined gaming for me (this gen) which is why I only play ps1-2 games. Xenoverse 2 for example. The developers released a half-assed game and roster, and then they want to charge 10 dollars per DLC character. It’s dragon ball z, the characters have existed for over 20 years, so why are they not already in the game? Gaming has become a scam now in my opinion. 60 bucks for an unfinished product and then an extra $200+ in DLC.

Another part of the problem is that the price of new games has pretty much stayed constant at $60 for the past 20 years or more. At the same time, the cost of making AAA titles has gone way up. So something has to give. For whatever reason, perhaps because a lot of gamers are relatively poor teenagers, the choice has been made to keep the base price constant at $60 and then use paid DLC to make up for the difference. Being a fan of having a complete physical copy of a game, I always hope that a physical 'complete' edition is released a year or so down the road. But this is becoming increasingly less common it seems. Unfortunately, developers/publishers seem to be increasingly relying on paid DLC /season passes as almost a crutch. I almost wish they'd just wait until they have everything they want to include completed and then just charge $80 for the whole thing.

Mark Hubenthal they would charge at least 100 per game. And nobody would be willing to pay that. So they try to be slick and get that money in smaller $DLC increments

Great video Reggie as always. You know, back in 1995 I remember renting Resident evil for the first time and man I was hooked! Its probably the reason I bought the ps1. Last year I purchased broken sword for the ps1and I still haven't played it. Have you played Blazing Dragons for the ps1? Its very humorous with famous voice actors. Then again, judging by your enormous collection, you probably own it already. Just thought I shared it with you. Peace Reggie.

My backlog reaches back to some SNES, PS1, PS2, & Dreamcast games, meaning some games have been on my backlog for generations -- yup, 15 years or more. I used to gig/tour in an old school prog metal band, but now, mind you, I've been home on disability since 2010, and my backlog is *still growing.* Even current gen games (especially PS4) come out faster than I can play them. (plus generations don't last long enough -- games need better preservation). Hey, and my 1st games that got me addicted to collecting were also Resident Evil Director's Cut, and Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey. (then FF7).

I know what you are saying with those obligations, I've been playing Assassins Creed origins since launch and still have to uncover half of the map. A few games I played last year for hours like BotW and XBX I gave up sleep for it but still felt like I was rushing through them even if I took my time to uncover most things or level up to beat the strongest enemies. But those obligations in the back of my head give me a feeling of rushing through games. A feeling I never head back in the days with FF7 or MGS for example.

Sometimes losing savedata is good in the longrun , because you now have to get everything complete again but with the savefile in sometimes you put the game down after 5 or 20 minutes.

I don't agree. I'm not a "collector", but I do have over 2000 games. Of those 2k games I'm quite sure I've barely played 15% of them. I don't buy new games and mostly buy only games on sale and that's the key. Buy games on sale and play when you can! :)

i like to get a library of games, i try and get games when a sale happens, as with modern games they fluctuate so much here in the UK. the reason i do that is when i bought games full price and only had a few great games to hand, i wouldnt be in the mood to play what i had. Now i have lots to choose from, i can play whatever my mood heads me towards!

I'm very mindful of this myself. I have a "beat more games than I buy" policy that prevents my collection from growing at a faster rate that I can churn through the backlog. I try to complete two for every one I add.

I play the games that get a lot of hype and praise first then I check others as well. But i don't have to finish every game in my collection. I collect because I really like having physical media mostly. Like you said time is precious and to me spending time with family is more important than trying to finish every game title.

I've picked up about 100 games in between Jan. 2016 and Feb. 2018. I noticed my backlog was getting pretty big, so so stopped buying more games. Been having a blast playing through all the games I picked up though. Couple downers, nothing terrible.

I can definitely see where you'r coming from and I do enjoy the "hunt" for purchasing slightly older games. However now I have such a backlog of games that it becomes overwhelming, like what do I have time to actually play now a days? Do I focus on more triple A games like God of War or more indie games. I fall into also buying games when they are advertise not because they are going to become rare, but because they sound interesting. At this point I have like you, about half my games on the shelf that I have not even touched due to time. I always tell myself that I will get to it one day, but realistically, they just become decorations on the shelf that will just keep adding to the ever growing list of games that I may or may not play. Great content Reggie, new subscriber, keep it up!

I’m a gamer and a collector. So yes, I collect games I may not play for years; or never play, and that’s ok. I love the hobby and I love having a complete collection. But I also play games. . . everyday. I focus on one game at a time until beat and then move on to the next. In fact, my favorite way to play is to start at the beginning of a series and play all games until the end of the series. For example, I just finished the kingdom hearts series. I started with KH1 on the PS2 and finished with KH3 on the PS4 with 14 releases in between. So yeah that’s another reason to collect games you may not play right away.

I try to choose titles carefully and I keep the games I think are special and showcase them. The only time a game is left on the shelf unplayed is if the price is too good to pass up. I save money and I get around to it later. I know my tastes now so I waste less time and money.

Back in the day it was easy to finish most games I had, as like you said I did not have as many games, but the older I get the less time, and patience I have for gaming, but I hope to at some point in time to get through all of them, maybe when I hit retirement age in 30 years lol, but I only buy games I want to play, or someone else in my family wants to play.

Just finished one more game few days ago. It was Super Robot Taisen Original Generation on GBA (finished the two scenarios). God damn, that was long and hard. But it was one of my favourite games. I really take my time to fully appreciate a game. I try to be closer to the 100 % from my first (and certainly last) playthrough because i got a lot of games i have to play, and most of them, like RPGs, are time consuming. Enjoying every bit of a game is very important to me, because i know that i'm not going to replay it before many many years (or not). I started to play and finish all my games 4 years ago. And because of my work, the matters of life, and others things, it's kinda hard to play video games when you have responsabilities. But it's okay. A lot of mine are in mint condition, and i know that i'm not going play them before finishing some first. Anyway, 19 out of 66 lol. With 47 games left from all genres (most are RPGs), i already know what i'm gonna do with my free time for the next 10 or 15 years of my life ahah.

I just don't have time to play all the games I buy. I have always thought it would be great to stop purchasing and started playing through my games. I have a couple games I purchased with no intent to play, Breach and Clear on Vita for example. I bought it so I could have their first release. Now they have exploded. I research all their games before I buy them. Now I have a budget. This video has me thinking I should take a break and get back to playing games.

I haven't yet, but ai plan to. I only buy games I intend on playing, unless it's a variant or rerelease to support devs for a game I love. It has slowed down my purchases, and it means I'm just getting a bit more selective with games I'm buying. I'm also trying to play more than I buy this year.

Spot in with your thoughts on DLC. I didn't mind it when I got my 360 4 years ago. At first I thought it was alright seeing some of the little extras you can ad to your game. Now it is just DLCing you to death like you say carving the game up and offering parts that were apart of the game to begin with as DLC. Including that one game, or have more done it now, that sold you the ending of the game as DLC what the hell. If anything I am glad I held out for a Game Of The Year Edition like when I got the Batman games and got a bit of the DLC with it. Only bad thing is if they offered the whole game how much would it actually cost. with no DLC or Microtransactions. at launch. Seeing you game collection behind you what is your most favorite game library you have?

I used to play video games religiously up until about 14 years old. My life at home deteriorated with my father's drug use, and life just got in the way. It wasn't until I was about 24 or 25 and established myself as an adult that I started buying consoles and games again. For all gamers out there, don't be discouraged. Buy what you like. You don't have to have 10,000 games to be a gamer. I recently added the PS4 Pro console to my collection. I only have about 10 games so far but that works for me. I have a few I'm playing and a few I can trade with others. I'll have a large collection sooner than later. Peace.

I was only thinking about this the other day. I don’t have many games in my collection probably around 130 over about 9 systems) but yet I must have about 50 games that I haven’t put more than 4-5 hours into and some of them are still sealed (the PS4 ones anyway). I put the fact that I haven’t got much time to play them, due to work and other commitments, combined with the fact that I probably put a lot of the time I do get into certain games that have a lot of content (RPG’s), plus some of them are better to play with friends and if they don’t have time then I don’t bother and end up watching KZbin!

I think one of the biggest issues as adults who play games is that we have more expendable income to buy most if the games that we want but we don't have nowhere near enough time as we used to play them all. So we find ourselves buying the games that we think k we'd like but before you know it, it's been sitting on a shelf for a while because if real life. It was so much easier as a kid when we didn't have the work and social obligations most of us have now, some people even working two jobs. It's hard to find the time. Now, that doesn't excuse those who are buying up all these games just to fit in, I know a few people in my personal life who are like that and it just makes them posers. I have one friend in particular that does this thing where if I say a game is covered or rare, he'll put it on his list of games to get even thought he had no knowledge of it prior. That attitude seems so silly! Another awesome video Reggiumsss! :D
