My world will never be the same! This is exactly what I thought after watching this film adaptation of the story of Hua Mulan, a girl who supposedly lived in the V century ad, during the Northern Wei dynasty in China. The film shows how it could actually be. Real war, real feelings: courage and weakness, death and love, heroism and betrayal. It covers the events of twelve years of endless wars, with a short backstory and ending, while the film does not let go for a second and almost two hours of screen time fly by unnoticed. Great direction, music accompanying the entire film! I must say that the film is not shot as a fairy tale, but rather realistic. Battle scenes in the best Hollywood traditions, there was no sense that the extras just waving props at random. And at the same time, not without Chinese martial arts. This is a really high-quality and expensive film. The game of actors gives a complete immersion in the feelings and experiences of the characters. No wonder actress Zhao Wei was chosen for this role among other famous Actresses such as Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeo. I liked that on the screen I saw not an actress, but a heroine.I also want to note that the main male character is exactly as I imagined it, here the actor Chen kun fully met the expectations. The film is tragic, but what else can there be a war? For fans of the cartoon, you need to prepare to shed tears throughout the viewing. Now I looked at the children's fairy tale that had become an adult reality with completely different eyes. My rating for the film is 10 out of 10! It is a pity that the film did not become a box office, my opinion is that the picture deserves the highest rating and awards! I recommend everyone to watch it, you will not regret it!

@Pinki L Agree. This is the GOLD STANDARD. It depicts war accurately - with all its horror. I bought the DVD, + watch it with the Cantonese Dialogue. (Director Jingle Ma is from Hong Kong) Even today, I still love Zhao Wei; she GENUINELY DESERVED all her 4 Best Actress Awards, with this film.

This movie was ok at best however Id still give it more credit than Disneys live action Mulan since Disney would rather have their actors speak English instead of Chinese so it appeals to the local audience first and then internationally second as the case with all of their films even though a 'good' asian film like Crouching Tiger doesn't need to. Then again Crouching Tiger was 20 years ago and the intelligence level has taken a nose dive considering all of the uneducated BLM panhandlers wanting free handouts in society. I guess this is why Disney always sticks with Englsh as the prioritized language of choice.

There are two really old and cheesy musical adaptations from China. Those ones tell the story most accurately to the poem. However, this one is possibly my favorite. I'll admit that I haven't seen the Disney remake, as people have been saying how bad it is. I might give it a watch out of curiosity. Also, the story of Mulan is a folktale that had existed long before the poem. The poem might be the oldest written narration, but Mulan is like a Chinese equivalent to Robin Hood or King Arthur. You have a basic story, but creative liberties can be highly encouraged.

In real life many nomadic tribal powers from north of China would have them; they served as advisors and "religious protectors" to the Khans. This is probably where Disney got their "magic witch who transforms into a bird" from.

I heard that the story of Fa Mulan is true, but that she had to hide her identity as a woman. If that's true, however much I like Zhao Wei, she's the wrong person for the role, because there's just NO way anyone can mistake her for a man.
