The conclusion in the end is so touching. I’m from Taiwan, where TPA come from. They are like heroes for any player who play league at that time, I still remember how passion I was when I watch the S2 championship. Thank you for making this episode, it’s good to look back at the good old times.
@DavidCarloAFermo4 жыл бұрын
This is a necro, but they weren't just heroes for Taiwan, but the whole GPL as a whole. I remember it being a huge thing where people every game was just celebrating while sporting the s2 worlds icon.
@jasonleung92917 жыл бұрын
Just to add a little bit more context to the "underdog" narrative, TPA then was a newly formed team less than a year old, and although they won the GPL (the top league for Taiwan before LMS), no one gave much recognition as GPL's teams weren't as competitive as the other regions. Then, before worlds, TPA went to korea for a bootcamp, and they literally lost against every korean team they scrimmed against, they lost like 15 games or something (someone please confirm this, not sure). It was to the point where even the lowest ranking pro kor team could beat TPA, who were the champions of GPL. Hence, people called them "kings of SEA" (aka you're trash outside of SEA). Entering worlds, I remember some people were even arguing if GPL should even be given a spot, and when the commentators were talking about teams vs TPA, it was almost always one-sided. They were always talking about which teams they would face after defeating TPA. In conclusion, they were treated like a glorified wildcard team that only made it here courtesy of Riot. When TPA beat M5 in semi-finals, the Taiwan channel shoutcaster, Chang Mao (長毛) cried on live stream, as this when TPA was truly recognized as a contender by the whole world. Fun fact: TPA midlaner Toyz, was the one who popularized Orianna in competitive play. Before Toyz, you would rarely see Orianna played anywhere (competitive or solo queue). To put it in perspective, Orianna was like fucking Urgot back then, as her ball control mechanics/skill set wasn't popular amongst pro or casual players. After Toyz busting out the beast Ori in worlds, everyone wanted a piece of Ori...... (fucking solo q retards picking Ori and hard feeding back then, fml). I still remember how emotional I was when TPA beat M5, which was surprising as I never thought e-sports would be this exciting. Hopefully someday, we'll see another team like TPA, who can come in against all odds, and win it all.

I think the most fun thing about these videos about old League games are the weird and wonderful picks that were in vogue back then. Karthus was a valid pick, so was Mundo, Shyvana, Skarner, hell, M5 were playing _midlane Evelynn._ And did you SEE how wide Sona's Crescendo was back then? This win was particularly notable for 2 major reasons. Firstly, it was the first WORLDWIDE LoL championship win, the first one where Worlds was a major event on its own, rather than a small tournament held at a bigger gaming event. Fnatic didn't even get to hoist the Summoner's Cup when they won Season 1 because, as you saw in the video, it was actually unveiled for the first time at this event. And second, because this was the ONLY time other than Season 1 that Worlds would be won by a non-Korean team (and even then, Azubu Frost made the grand final)- the next 4 seasons would be won by Samsung Galaxy White once, and SKT _three times._ That's why this championship still has a special place in my heart.

Soloing assasin champs with support shen was my main way of mastering it and i don't think I will never get tired of TPA shen. To my heroes, the Taipei Assassins. Though the world may have forgotten of your name and glory, you will always be legends to the people that witnessed your ascent to the top of the world. You will always be remembered as the best team of your Era, having dominated your home region, GPL, with a perfect record before winning worlds. To Stanley who inspired me to dominate top lane early in my league career and whom I studied because of his amazing laning efficiency. To Lilballz who taught me the importance of vision and how to jungle while putting pressure across the map while setting up vision, being a pillar of support to my team from the jungle. To Toyz whom inspired me to be the midlaner I am today, to whom inspired me to play Orianna and to whom I fashioned my Orianna play from as well from whom I learned so much from as I watched him play even as he retired. To Mistake whom inspired me to be the shotcaller of my team and lead my team to greater heights. And to Bebe, the person who inspired me to main Ezreal and to whom I dedicated my Ezreal and all the effort I put into mastering and trying to innovate Ezreal across metas the way he did, switching across builds and showing the world the beautiful blue build that the world still uses until this day, even though unfortunately the world has forgotten and discredits it's origin, the person I supported till retirement as the sole tpa member that continued to play. You are all my heroes. You were the perfect example of greatness at the wrong time. You were at the right time to win a championship, but at the wrong time to manifest your legends to the history that common people know about. Thank you for inspiring me to reach the heights that I have over the course of my league career. Thank you for being the icons that ushered in the center stage for what true league of legends competition at the highest level truly looks and feels like. This video would get a like but how can you NOT mention Toyz playing Anivia vs Rapidstars Karthus and absolutely destroying him in cs and then in the VERY NEXT MATCH playing Karthus into Anivia and STILL ruining him. The man played a matchup in the world finals against the top korean teams midlaner and was beating him by 50 cs out of laning phase...then he played the matchup from the other side and outcs'd him again by over 50 cs out of laning phase...not including that isn't really acceptable its very much part of the legend.

@@azlastor that's false. Misaya, Toyz and Rapidstar was better than Alex Ich with Rapidstar being debateable. Still to be up 50 cs both sides of the matchup is crazy. I actually copied his Orianna laning to every point and got to diamond due to those mechanics. It was crazy, I was always ahead by at least 10 cs up to 30 depending on the matchup and in matchups I was countered, I could be ahead by 5 cs or go even without losing map pressure. Sadly it's not replicable nowadays due to the wolves and raptor camp being exclusive to junglers in the early game.

What Ushinau said, they screen looked multiple times during the match. Caught looking multiple times actually, they weren't caught until after the match looking at replays from the stream. It affected a level 1 strategy by TSM a lot because back then adc/support would slide into bottom bush early but TSM was trying to 5 man ambush them. They looked at screen and knew they were stacked, even stood outside the range after wave crashed in. . . it was extremely obvious and all they got was a fine after the match

Season 2 was truly the Worlds were every region could've perhaps won though, it has nothing to do with sounding old. Korea wasn't yet that insane at the game because their E-sports infrastructure hadn't fully picked it up yet, and western regions were still in their early stages of being the pioneers of the game, and then you had underdogs in TPA that apparently weren't worse than the most well known teams at all.

ahh, back in the day when any region except for NA actually had a real chance of competing for the world title.. so nostalgic

Darien was strict reason why m5 lost that one, he refused to ban out nidalee claiming he could take on her

Still the only team who won Worlds without any Korean player(aside from FNC S1 of course which I really don't consider as a legitimate Worlds Champion). Respect

What the heck was TPA's strategy? It's no wonder why they won. They played SO differently.

Necro but, they played the map with their vision control and lane pressure.

Before worlds 2012 started, I picked TPA to win. May have been the only one outside of Taiwan.

Daniel Cheung I was right there with you. I was rocking their icon in game before worlds and everyone made fun of me saying they have no chance. They were horribly wrong.
