There are only a handful of culinary institutions in this city that have stood the test of time for half a century or more. Serving their patrons faithfully, not just in their fare that harks back to the days when things were simple, but also conveying the nostalgia of many memories across generations. And so it is indeed a sad day when one of them has to close doors soon.
I have visited New Krishna Bhavan in Malleshwaram a few times, to film and to partake of their trademark, unfussy South Canara fare. This time at the restaurant felt different though, its imminent closure palpable in the sentiments echoed by the owners, cooks and many customers for whom NKB was part of their life.
This is an episode I wish I didn’t have to film. But here it is nonetheless. Take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
Note: The restaurant’s last day of operation is 5th Dec 2023.

My parents used to come here and the park opposite when they just got married. My mom is no more. I came here as a kid. My teacher got married here when I was in 10th. My son is in 10th now. For 3 gens we relish the green masala idli. We went yesterday to have it one last time😢. Sad that some of the old time Malleshwaram families are not able to protect their assets because the next gen have settled abroad. Apartment buildings have replaced the beautiful homes. Gold shops have replaced eateries :😢

Such a shame that the tik tok generation doesn't value the brand and business bulit through hard work by their grandfather who was the founder of this establishment. The founder must be crying for the deeds of his grandchildren. Shameful that they dont want to compete with McDonald's of the world. Shame on owners who destroy business built by the previous generation.

Hey @kripal, this video is a stark reminder of what's being lost in the relentless march towards so-called "progress" in the culinary world. The closure of New Krishna Bhavan isn't just about the end of a restaurant; it's the death knell for authenticity, tradition, and genuine human connection in the food industry. Your other videos often showcase the invasion of robots and AI (and yes, I am cryptically referring to those "gloves-wearing chefs") into the kitchen, turning the art of cooking into a mechanized, soulless process. NKB, with its nostalgic ambiance and decades-old recipes, represents a dying breed in the face of this heartless trend. It's disheartening to witness the reduction of food to a mere product, assembled like a fast-food chain, where the human touch is replaced by a cold, mechanical process. It's important to point out the absurdity of cloud kitchens offering the same taste everywhere. It's a formulaic approach that drains the unique flavors and character out of regional cuisine. NKB, on the other hand, stands as a testament to the soul and dedication that go into crafting each dish. The video beautifully captures the essence of what a restaurant should be - a place where emotions and relationships are as important as the food. The 75-year-old cook, unsure about what to do next, symbolizes a dedication and love for the craft that's increasingly rare in an era obsessed with early retirements and robotic efficiency. The audience too, at every scene, reminds you of their relentless love for this restaurant, something you don't see in other new-age restaurants. Contrast this with the attitude displayed by some modern establishments, where everything seems to be about presentation, packaging, and maximizing profits. The focus on business over gratitude is painfully evident, and it's a sad commentary on the direction the industry is heading. Marketing with a "desi-touch" like "thatte idly," "donna biryani," etc., is infuriating in its reduction of a cultural treasure to mere product packaging and sterile recipes. My sincere request and call for more videos like this are a plea for collective soul-searching. It's a reminder that we, as consumers, hold the power to shape the narrative. Let's support establishments like NKP that embody the spirit of genuine, heartfelt cooking. Because in the end, it's not just about the food; it's about preserving our culinary heritage and the human stories behind every dish. #SaveOurTraditions #NKBForever

We, as a family, can never forget Mr. Ramakrishna Prabhu and New Krishna Bhavan. When our youngest daughter was born 41 years ago, there was a medical emergency and we were advised to present immediately to the nursing home on Malleswaram 6th cross. Since we were living near BEL then, we chose to live in a room at New Krishna Bhavan for 10 days to be close to the nursing home during an emergency. I must admit we got angel of a doctor in Dr. Haridas and an angel of a caretaker in Ramakrishna Prabhu who ensured that we were all taken care of. Mr. Prabhu became a good friend of my mine and even though our meetings were far and few in between, we maintained a very good relationship whenever we visited New Krishna Bhavan. So was his son, Sundar, a gem. I am now 80 and I find the number of such souls shrinking. NKB, we will miss you.

Sunil Prabhu to restart this Temple of Food. My intuition is strong on this. The wishes of all food lovers will ensure it happens soon. Waiting to see the Headline New Krishna Bhavan takes birth again.

I remember visiting this place when I visited Bangalore with my parents and sister in 1970. The second time was when we came here in the early '80s on a study tour with our college. Have visited the place a few times after I moved to Bangalore. Really sad to hear they are closing down. It was one place with authentic Kannadiga food. Truly heart-breaking.

Kripal I am from Mumbai I have never been to this place nor ever seen this place but all through your episode I was just chocking and could not control my tears. Feel so very bad for Sunil and also the staff who are working in the kitchen since last 45 years I really don’t know what all emotions they all must be going through. Also it was very difficult to see Sunil cry I can understand what all must be going through his mind now but Kripal as you rightly said in the end that there is always a reason for this to happen probably something good . My best wishes to Sunil and all his staff at the Mew Krishna Bhavan. God bless them all 🙏🏻🙏🏻. One uncle rightly called this as an Institution. God bless you Kripal to bring out this episode so that many of its fans can have what they crave for one last time.

If NKB can look back on its legacy, I think it can only do so with pride. Being open for 70 years has been a huge achievement. No doubt for those of us who grew up eating the food here, we will miss the establishment incredibly. The regional specials here were an innovation back in the day and stood the test of time over decades. The broader question is whether the hype and hoopla surrounding some of the newer establishments is contributing to the decline of old classics. I am sure there are valid arguments on both sides of the debate. Hope to see NKB's legacy live on in a new avatar some day.

This news certainly came as a shock and the closing of this eatery has affected me more than India losing the World Cup 🙈 I used to stay in this area and if we had guests home, we would bring them here to Gopika. My visit to Mantri Mall would be incomplete without a visit here. Unfortunately this area does not have many nice family restaurants with a comfortable ambience and great food. Iconic hotels like Janata or CTR or By2Coffee aren't places where one can celebrate occasions. But Gopika was different. My parents celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary here and after my court marriage, both our families had a meal at this place. As I live in Gurugram, I wouldn't even be able to pay it one last visit. Thank you for this video. Watching this is the next best thing. 🙏

Our family outing during 80's and 90's, our old chetak, me standing in front, Appaji, Amma and our cute sister who was infant during that times, would go around to Malleswaram and taste the best north and south indian dishes, during at that time, mantri mall was complete wondering land no human habitat, it used to be scary during night times and we as kids would get chills to go to hotel and we used to enjoy the ride back, what golden days and what memories for our family, will surely visit the place to pay respect and also to jog down some memory of my family, i can surely miss the hotel and our memories.

Places like NKB defines Malleshwaram. We are slowly the losing such iconic old Bangalore landmarks to new age malls, shopping complex and restaurants. Sad to see Bangalore transform. I felt Very sad to know about their closure !!😢😢 can all the bangaloreans do something to make the last day memorable ? ? ? Sir, can you take some initiative for this ? Also , they should have patented their iconic dishes i feel ! All the best for NKB's staff and Mr. Sunil !!

Thanks for this particular episode Kripal ji. These landmark restaurants are like the aged parents and grandparents that have nurtured many generations but are now not manageable due to various reasons. The legacy of NKB has been well documented in your vlogs though. Thanks once again 🙏

I remember visiting this place from 1978 as kid ....have fond memories around this place started entrepreneurial journey from a building next door NKB and our lunch used to be from NKB, while I was not a very frequent visitor but still I would go 3 to 4 times a year ...some locations , buildings and places aren't just physical it emotes an unexplainable feel and NKB for me is that feeling...I am sure all that happens is for good and NKB for me will be etched in memory for this life time

People who have grown in that city/place's vicinity can relate to this feeling and who have had food from there pretty often even more.Such was the feeling when many of the single screen theaters closed permanently in Kolkata, maybe the infrastructure wasn't upto the mark when compared to the latest cinema experience that Inox was providing but the memories of watching the movies with friends sometimes by bunking school, college is something which is irreplaceable 😢 Similar happened with me when the Pub World (in bridage road)closed down or when Appu Ghar and Regal Cinema closed down(delhi)a place where I have been 3rice as a child during Delhi visits

I used to live in Seshadripuram, an area adjacent to Malleswaram. Visited NKB several times growing up in the 70-80s. Didn't go back for many years as I moved out of Bangalore. Went there a few years ago and a friend of mine insisted we go down for a bite at NKB. That was when we had their Green Idlis. I was absolutely blown away by the taste. No doubt, spicy but simply delicious. Devastated that NKB like so many other eateries that I used to frequent during my youth are all disappearing. Change and the fast pace of life have claimed too many victims.

Good luck to the owner of NKB and here's hoping that he is able to start another restaurant venture even if elsewhere in bangalore and bring back in some of the experienced hands from this NKB to keep the magic going.

I wish NKB, the owners, the partners, their employee pillars to have very good times ahead. Mr Kripal, your great work helped several struggling eateries after the pandemic and I wish some miracle can recourse the NKB decision and we get to see it again. Couldn't have had a better send off. To me it really feels, "until we meet again" with NKB.

Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦. It's clearly evident that Mr Sunil is very, very emotional and heartsore that his eatery will be closing. My opinion is that he doesn’t want it to close and perhaps it's not by any choice of his own. Be that as it may, we wish him and his very hard workers all the very best in the future. I somehow hope that Mr Sunil reopens another eatery. It was very sad to see his final speech towards the end of this video. I can feel his pain and discontent after him being there for 23 years. Mr Sunil....... I wish you the best going forward. Regards

The success of such legacy restaurants lies in the hearts of the employees. Happy employees will make happy customers. I wish to own a restaurant some day. I only hope I find such employees to work with, with whom I can grow taking care of each other. It's a life well lived for all these people.
