She closed 2006 WC in Germany singing Hips Don't Lie live. Then, in 2010 she was chosen to do the official WC song, this song, and it became the best selling WC song of all time! And Shakira became the only artist to sing in 2 World Cups! But, in 2014 she did an unofficial song, La La La (Brazil 2014). People liked it so much that there was a huge social media campaign with the hashtag #ShakiraSaveTheWorldCup. FIFA had no choice but to ask her to perform at the closing ceremony in Brazil. So, she's now the only performer in history to have perfomed in 3 World Cups. And in the last one she was pregnant!!!

❤ this reaction. As a South African, hearing this song always brings joy to my heart. I was able to go to the FIFA Celebration concert in 2010 when we hosted the World Cup that year. Seeing Shakira perform with our awesome group Freshly Ground was obviously a monumental moment for them and the country. Always love the African influence in the song and it was time for Africa back then. Thanks for bringing back the awesome memories and for your entertaining Shakira reactions, Cliff!

There was a bit of backlash about this song back in the day, not because of Shakira being bad or anything related to her talent. But because FIFA chose a South-American singer instead of an African one. And since there are many just as talented, it was a big miss from the organization. The song is beautiful and iconic though, that's for sure and Shakira did an amazing job. I remember in 2010 this was all over the radio all the time and was a song that was so catchy we would end up singing it and dancing all the time when it came on the radio.
