The frozen video was shoot in Cuddeback Lake, Mojave desert, in California, in January 1998. Madonna declared this was the hardest video to shoot in her career by then, due to the extreme cold she had to suffer. Madonna was wearing a SS98 Jean Paul Gaultier dress, inspired by the figure of Frida Kahlo, which is no questions, one of the biggest influencer for M. M also stated that she wanted the desert as a concept, because she sees it as magical, and mystical, and therefore, a perfect location for the imagery evoked by the lyrics. I was going to add something about this, but you've basically said it. Madonna had originally hoped to shoot this somewhere like Iceland, but felt that it would be too cold, so she opted for the approach of using the desert and using a filter; however it turned out to be extremely cold on that day anyway. Here's a quote from her about the switch of location from Iceland to the Mojave desert: - 'You know what, I'm going to be freezing. I'm going to be miserable, I'll be complaining all day, I'll be sorry that I ever chose a cold place. So I said, 'Let's do it in the desert, it'll be warm,' and it would be sort of the opposite, because even though you think of deserts as being hot, they're still sort of frozen in terms of there's no vegetation and they're very desolate. I thought that that would still work as a visual, but then we got there and it was like 20 degrees below zero, it was bitterly cold, and I was barefoot. I was barefoot for the entire video, and then it started pouring rain and everyone got really sick, and it just actually turned out to be a really miserable experience

One of her most precious masterpieces, this all filmed as she was about to release ROL, and relaunch an already wonderful career. I remember watching this as a kid and still makes me feel so nostalgic. The best! I loved watching your face watching this. This is perhaps my favourite of all Madonna songs and videos, and I think it's important to highlight for you where it came in her history, so to speak. Before this, Madonna had been on a bit of a hiatus following the Evita film, the birth of her first child and this was the very first release from the Ray of Light album. Her last complete studio album before this was 1995's Bedtime Story which was great in its own right but very R&B influenced, and then she came out with Evita and then the Something to Remember compilation, which was largely ballads. Coupled with her motherhood and more serious work, there was a sense that perhaps Madonna was starting to wind down, to grow old and to fade away... ...and then she came out with Frozen and the rest of the Ray of Light album, which completely flipped that perception onto its head. It was a real rennaissance for Madonna, especially with the new William Orbit-produced music. To see Madonna come out with something so artistic, so different, so beautifully understated was quite startling. It was also the first time that we had heard Madonna's post-Evita trained voice in something other that straightforward ballads. As for the video, this particular gothic witch like appearance is especially memorable, and the symbolism of being frozen by her love interest's lack of emotional availability is there to see - the song is essentially one of extreme female angst, longing and heartbreak. I love the imagery of the magic of the earth flowing into her hands, empowering her. The dancing style is inspired by Indian classical dance, with all the intricate and graceful hand movements (called 'hasta' in the Bharatanatyam dance style), and by her past as a protege of Martha Graham. You can also see use the mehndi (henna) artwork on her hands, and the Hindu sacred 'Om' symbol on her palm (that's the symbol that looks like a '3' with an extra tail added on). They had to have two lookalike dancers to do the other two figures, hence you can't see their faces clearly. It's bleakly gorgeous, it's spiritual and transcendential, and I love it.

Love the reaction! About the desert metaphor: deserts can be really cold too 😀 specially at night, because there's nothing around to help keep the heat of the day, so it dissipates pretty quickly. This was shot in a real location, the Mojave Desert, next to L.A and it was actually cold. There are 'making of' videos of it here on KZbin where you can see M herself talking about the cold and how her stunt must be freezing standing there while they adjust light and camera. And of course, desert = loneliness

We see that there are three apparitions of Madonna. Coming back to the similarities of Madonna in this music video and the Greek Goddess Hecate, Hecate is known to be a triple goddess and is often portrayed in her triple form. Hecate is also the goddess of black female dogs, now, we’re not saying that Madonna is one, but pointing out the similarities, Madonna does shape-shift into a black dog-as well as black ravens, in the video. In addition to this, we can also see a variable of yoga poses and hand gestures connected to Hinduism. In the middle of the music video, Madonna reveals another henna tattoo, decorated in the middle of the palm of her right hand. It is the symbol of “Om”, which is a mystic and sacred syllable in the teachings of Hinduism. And she had just converted to Hinduism and was doing an learning Yoga at that time also.

This video is inspired by Hinduism. She's portraying a mystical creature from the desert an channeling her inner animals. Her hands are painted with henna which is a traditional thing in India and the sign in her palm is the Sanskrit word "om" that refers to the vibration of the universe, the "tune" in which all existence vibrates.
