Broken Front End Loader Transmission Case.CAT970F

Hey guys. Well, here is a tricky repair. This CAT970F front end loader with an Iron Wolf Milling attachment ran over a big rock and made a cooling vent window on the transmission case. It now stays nice and cool, although it doesn't, and cant move anymore either. Its funny how that happens. Follow along as I get this Big Ole Machine running again.

Tricky working around oil soaked cast iron. The fact you got a patch plate to stick without a ton of porosity is some skill.

Many years ago I watched my dad weld some casting. Old school with nickel rod for cast. This would have been some 35-40 years ago. I remember dad doing like you short welds then peen the heck out of it with his chipping hammer. It was no a patch just welding up lots of cracks. I done recall what the casting was for. I do remember dad going slow to prevent to much heat build up. On the bigger casting. The smaller one he heated with a rose bud before welding then reheated after then rapped it in a welding blanket to allow it to cool slowly. But the bigger casting was to big to do that. After that dad had some old piece of cast. He demonstrated for me what happens when you try to run a bead on cold cast. It did not take but a minute or so and pop it cracked right next to the weld. Then dad went on to explain to me the reasons he did the repair the way he did. Basically like you did short welds then beat it a lot to stretch the weld to relieve the stress. Your torch work reminds me of my dad a lot. You have a very steady hand and very clean cuts. I do enjoy watching your repair videos. Watching a master at his trade is always interesting and educational. Thanks for sharing 👍

Super field repair. They have made a huge advance with welding on cast iron over the past 30 years. Even with that data, it takes a master welder to complete this type repair. Thanks for the look over your shoulder. You make it look easy.

If you are just learning to weld, jobs like this are where you really learn it thoroughly. Cramped up under the thing with little to no space, overhead with poor visibility and hot metal running down your neck while still needing to deliver a good bead. I'd advise anyone to leave the nice welding table behind as quick as possible and do stuff like this, the learning curve will be tremendous.

Isaac I have came across this kind of repair and I have always told customer it's cast it is to hard to weld. Never thought of fluxcore but pulsing it I can see how it would work. Thanks again Isaac, I always learn something from you.

I really appreciated the time you took to show the machine running at the end. I know that's not always possible, but as someone in the operation and maintenance (O&M) industry - we live for that: getting things back up and running. Seeing it put back to work is the O&M visual equivalent of spiking the football in the end-zone! P.S. I like when you said, "I can make this even more of a mess very quickly." Welding is one of those things where one wrong element (machine setting, selected process, distance, travel speed, angle, etc.) can absolutely destroy what you set out to fix. I don't use a torch much or gouge, but I'm highly skilled at making small (or non-existing) holes even bigger with a welder!

Watching the sparks fall onto the foam and then roll under your back made me think a fire extinguisher (or water) would be handy in case your shirt caught fire. Very educational. Thanks for sharing. The problem I’ve had with patching cast iron with steel is the fact that steel expands more when heated and shrinks more when cooled. The two materials have a different coefficient of expansion. Finally got around the problem by making the patch plates out of an old bath tub and using a low temperature preheat with a propane torch. The bath tub was excellent quality cast iron. Took some grinding and dressing to get the enamel off the tub part but it worked. Mind you I’m doing not critical welds, belt guards and the like though I did patch one engine block. Used NR 2-11 as filler. Glad to see you made it happen.

Nice one thanks. Always a problem with cracks running. I've used many different techniques to stop it and doing it in a workshop in ideal conditions with pre heat etc always worked out best but of course earthmoving equipment is usually needed yesterday and downtime is a struggle.

steel works well ,if not in hi heat . i have cold patched and welded steel in cast and it can work well . the rates are very close . fouunder of Sealock and Gary of Lock-N-Stitch both have used steel patch in cast many times . this CAT case it most likely cast steel anyway . almost ALL heavy construction castings are . welding IF can get clean , stitch , peen , keep cool will work well . this Texan knows well .

Two things I enjoyed about this video other than your usual high quality work was you cutting the sharp pointed edges off the plate after you cut your patch piece out. Great video and nice work Issac, oh the huffing and puffing is a privilege we of this vintage get to enjoy 😂you repaired and it'll run again until the next breakdown, a buddy of mine welded on the pipe line up in the Tar Sands in Alberta just out of Fort McMurray for 23 yrs and then went into your line of welding in field repairs and he said some times you'd pull up to the equipment in your truck and get out to inspect and swear they ran over a landmine sometimes, and they'd ask so how long before your done , he said it depends on how fast you haul it to the shop,LOL , he got called allot, he had his welding ticket also along with his heavy duty mechanics ticket, when he'd come home after 3 weeks, his wife would ask him was it more calm or calamity this time around, the stories were always interesting and funny, you probably heard your share to. you always seem to overcome the difficulties and get you customer going again. 👍

I'd likely have called the customer and asked for another machine to make a flat path up to reasonably close to the machine. No sense risking your equipment when the customer likely has another machine nearby that could make a safe path to the machine.

Good work. I'm a diesel mechanic and I have had this problem many times. Welding cast iron is a difficult task and oil makes it even more difficult. You have a good hand and your experience is obvious. Many times I wished to have someone with your experience on the job and on occasion have had to do it myself. Good luck with God Bless.

Had a cement truck trans case once with a hole and cracked half way around through the PTO port. Backed into a kicked up concreted T post hiding in the mud. It had so much trash or oil in the casting the welds wouldn't stick. I had to instead brake clean the surface oil than cover the hole/crack with clear plastic and use temporarily blue expanding foam rubber to seal it so they could get it on a low boy to the shop till a new or used trans could replace it. Earned my mud badges that day.

As a suggestion, bcblock youtuber uses a Certanium 889SP stick for welding steel to cast. He's had a lot of success using it. It's advertised on the website to be able to weld without preheating and through oily coatings as well. Might be a rod to look in to, although it's pricey. Nice job on repairing the tranny.

Awesome job man! Just a tip from fellow manual driver, don’t be afraid of using low range in 4X4. It gives you so much more control, nice and slow without having to ride the clutch. Even just backing into the lake to launch my boat, I get lined up straight then shift it into 4 Low, nice slow and controlled. Anyway, awesome fix man. You never fail to impress me with your skill.

Exactly. I plow with a Jeep Wrangler. 4 low all the time. I've been criticized for it, but I don't beat up the jeep and I don't slip the clutch. Plus it makes going down a slippery hill very easy.

I've seen one of these (same issue, but more in the center than this hole was) patched in the weirdest way possible once: guy took out a hole saw (a quality one) made a hole, took out a pipe threader, cut a thread, then plugged it with a pipe bung. :)) That was one of the most surreal things i've seen, ever. Ran well enough to leave it be for a month until the season was over.

With the way the edge of the hole was tapered - I wonder if the missing piece of metal ended up inside the gearbox. If so, hopefully it stays at the bottom. You always create interesting and entertaining videos. Stay safe out there.

For possible pinhole leaks and sweating oil fuzz an old timer taught be a super cool trick. Lather up the bead or area with Caterpillar Hight Strength Retaining Compound and cover it all with wax paper so the compound would set. Then buff it all off after it’s set.

I’m new to your channel I’ve been watching all your Vids. I’m a sheet metal worker/ welder by trade. Just a tip not for nothing. If you weld a lifting eye ( cut the threads off so it’s flat on the bottom. Or a heavy gauge washer on your C grips. You can lock them on loose and spin the eye with a drift pin or anything to get them super tight if needed.

Impressive repair on thin cast iron with a MIG welder. You should be very proud Isaac! I hope those guys will get a new oil pan for the tranny but probably they won't :P At least they could install a protective plate underneath or the driver should be more careful.

Good job. I had a similar repair on a gear housing once. Luckily the customer was able to remove it and bring it to the shop. Only problem was the gear oil that had soaked into the cracks.

I have seen a severely holed and cracked alloy sump on a BMW, stranded out in the bush in Africa. It was fixed using JB Weld and lasted for years.
