We had a group of around 30 in a conifer eating pine cone seeds and they dropped about 500 cones to the ground in around 20 minutes. Red males, greyish females. Having trouble identifying due to males having 2 white stripes, one on each shoulder. I cannot find a bird with these 2 white markings. Ran to get camera but they were gone when I returned. Please help. Kawartha Lakes Ontario Canada. Thanks great video

Thank you so much for having this. I'm so glad that I found you. I have a feeder that sits outside of my window that I watch and manage everyday. I'm used to my house sparrows and my morning doves but these are new and very intriguing. The brightness in their coloring is phenomenal. When the light hits they look like they're glowing like a fireplace in ash. Bee-u-tee-ful!!! Now I can distinguish, or try to learn to distinguish, between my house finches and my purple finches, which I now know that I have! I'm so excited to share this information with my daughter.

Super helpful. I'm out where both house and purple finishes are year-round it's definitely a challenge to tell them apart by sight. First time I remember seeing some purple finches they were at the feeder with some house finches and it took me a bit to realize why that one pair looked so off from the rest.

Thanks for this information. Now hopefully I can tell if the finch that showed up to my house is a house or purple. Update the finches that are at my house now are purple finches. That’s a new bird I can add to me list.

I believe I have both house finches and a few purple finches. Do both species have the red or raspberry color on their "backs" between their upper wings? I wondered if this was one way I could identify a purple. I see some that are so vibrant! They are so so sweet!
@BadgerlandBirding3 жыл бұрын
Purple would normally have more color on the back. They have more of that “raspberry” wash in general. Definitely look at all the ID features though!

Aloha! I rescued a leucistic purple finch fledgling. Does the white at the eyebrow indicate it’s a female? Or just a purple finch? Thank you in advance.
@BadgerlandBirding2 жыл бұрын

What about hybrids between the three?
@BadgerlandBirding3 жыл бұрын
Hybrids are a lot less likely to be seen but they may have some characteristics of both species. Here's an interesting case of a bird that the observers thought may be a hybrid. mikeburrell.blogspot.com/2013/06/interesting-finch-from-rainy-river.html

Purple Finch or House Finch? If she can she should take it to a licensed rehabber :) A google search should let you know which ones are in the area. That’s sweet of her to help the little one

thank u for shareing. I have a nest i need to destroy. I wanted to make sure it was the invasive house finch and not the native purple. love unaliveing a invasive animal
@BadgerlandBirding8 ай бұрын
House Finches are not invasive. They’re also protected under federal law in the U.S. so it’s illegal to kill them.
