I grew up in Boise. When I was 20 I joined the military. I was stationed at Pensacola, FL for a while for training. One day I left base to get dinner with some friends, and we went to a restaurant. On the menu they had "Idaho baked potato" I ordered it to see what it was. This thing was the size of a football, I'd never seen a potato that big before. Turns out Idaho exports all the good ones, so most Idahoans have no idea how big an Idaho potato really is.

@@alexanderfretheim5720 There are a lot up in the panhandle, most of them are in the Salmon area. In fact it has almost ruined the outfitters. They used to be able to promise their clients at least a shot at an elk, they can no longer do that. When you can't promise at least a shot people are way less willing to spend their money. One of the biggest problems is moose. The wolves have devastated the moose population in Yellowstone Park. The calves are extremely vulnerable in the deep snow so the wolves capitalize on it. Moose don't migrate like the deer and elk do.

@@heavenx7673 Most people in Idaho dont like people moving here because they think it will change the culture of the state. Also cost of living has skyrocketed since people have begun to move here (primarily from Cali). The wages have never been great here and the low population made prices cheap, until recently... in my area housing has almost tripled in price in only 10 years due to the influx of people. So dont take it personally, it's just that a lot of the locals of the state are being priced out by non-locals, which has given a lot of them sour attitudes. P.S. This is a common attitude all over the NW, not just in Idaho.

Born and raised in Lewiston…moved away for collage and work…retired and RAN back to Idaho. Now I’m in Grangeville where I’m on the high prairie surrounded by steep canyons full of wild rivers, wild game and unexplored wilderness. I forgot what it was like to have people wave at you on the road, not lock my doors and keep my car running when I go shopping and it’s frozen or frying out. Amazing. Also, no kids with phones in their noses but riding bikes, swimming and just being active. I’ll never leave again.

NO! You can get ice cream in Idaho with potato flakes. Best stuff ever. When visiting go to Reed's Dairy. Get some ice cream, gourmet chocolate milk(or both and have a brown cow), and homemade grilled cheese sandwiches. And yes, even in the bigger cities you can get critters. Mountain lions and moose have been in Idaho Falls. And proper fry sauce has buttermilk and a dab of mustard mixed into it as well. And for a real treat, go to Craters of the Moon where the Apollo 14 astronauts practiced for the moon landing.

I can't be the only Idahoan who watches these videos because I love my state so much. I thought it was funny how you mentioned the gas station hub situation. Back in high school when we're drinking at someone garage we'd debate whether it was worth a gas station run or not because we'd be bound to run into more people who'd want to follow us back. But yeah the two big things I'd add is 1. We love our guns, don't freak out we'll probably let you shoot them if you ask and aren't weird 2. If you're going to go hiking be responsible and realize this isn't the LA hills and if you don't know what you're doing you can easily get lost, freeze to death, then be cached by a mountain lion to be slowly eaten over the course of a week and be the newest Missing 4/11 case. Seriously, people go missing all the time it sounds dramatic but you should really take it seriously if you're doing any real back country.

Hi there, fellow traveler! I'm so glad to see you loved visiting my state! As a Boise resident, I'd like to add one shock. You aluded to the safety of Idaho. There's a reason for that. A LOT of locals carry a sidearm. It is legal to open carry here. It may be a bit shocking for a tourist to see some guy wearing a gun on his hip while shopping, but it's quite common here. Thanks for highlighting the Gem State, Mark! Come back anytime!

@@carlajenkins1990 We just moved here from Cali, and carrying is definitely not bad manners here. Its kinda funny, but in Cali you could open carry up until 2012 as long as the gun wasnt loaded. Like you said it was considered in bad taste, especially because people would feel threatened and call the cops even though it was legal. I live in British Columbia just north of the Idaho border. In terms of nature, the northern USA and southern Canada are similar. The border was introduced thousands of years AFTER nature formed the land and the climate. Newfoundland is not too different from Maine in terms of nature. The politics and culture of Canada and the USA can be both similar and different, a lot of it has to do with the shared national principal origin of Britain but with some divergent values based on separate societies, cultures, outlooks, perceptions, and values.
