Cerro Grande destroyed a great pair of boots when I was living In Idaho Falls. I often walked in from Hwy 26 but didn't realize how sharp that stuff can be. interesting place.

Those areas used to be above the Yellowstone caldera. The continent has drifted away from that area now and so that train has left the station.

You mentioned one robber fields started having lava flows two days after the other. How are geologists able to be that accurate time wise fir an event so long ago? Is it a guess based on other observed eruptions or is there a a chemical dating method that is accurate enough to say definitively it was two days apart?

Any chance you could talk about the south sandwhich Island Volcanos? Google satellite views show mt. Belinda mid eruption and Wikipedia doesn't really have much, if any info other than the area is prone to strong seismic activity. Thanks for your work!

Given the lecture series with Nick Zentner I suspect the main cause for volcanism there is the East Pacific Rise/Juan de Fuca Ridge and the vast solid mantle discontinuity which underlies it. Have you looked into the mantle Seismic tomography stuff? Its fascinating and looks to be a revolutionary game changer in terms of understanding the larger Earth tectonic system.

In the case of these Idaho volcanic fields, North America is simply dragging over the Yellowstone hot spot. Eocene/Miocene subduction effects are not needed, unlike elsewhere in the west.

I would like if you could cover the Yatta Plateau in Kenya. This, in the 70s, was held to be one of the longest lava flows known on Earth, but I have seen little subsequent analysis. The plateau itself originates at Mt Kenya and dominates the landscape along the Galana River through Tsavo East National Park.

The angle of rifts look like they are relevant to/part of the Extension and Range geologic feature. I also subscribe to Shawn Willsey and Nick Zentner who between them cover this area in detail. Maybe you could join up for a video/podcast? Its all about sharing info. And thank you for this one.

No one talks about the fact that Yellowstone doesn't have any prominent satellite stratovolcanoes even tho it's a hot spot melting continental crust nor does it have any highly active volcanoes in the vicinity like seen elsewhere

Thanks GeologyHub guy . .. another interesting video. I went thru the lava fields area several years ago, and was surprised to see all that lava, but not much of a sign of a volcano. So I presumed the volcano "wore down" over time, or those lava fields were actually caused when the "ancient astronauts" used that are for a launch pad and basically melted the surrounding mountains. Eh ?

4:16 is that circular water body to the NE of the CGLF volcanic in origin?
@RandomRetallingsofRiggins

That is not a water body it is a small butte in the middle of the desert called the middle butte it has blackish-reddish rock making the summit covered by a small forest. Volcanic yes Water no.

@b.a.erlebacher1139

Plates move over hot spots very slowly. In 20 years they might move only centimeters. Plus the mantle plume tends to get stretched out as the plate moves, because the existing route to the surface remains the route of least resistance for a long time.
