"I know quite a few men and women whose one-and-done watch is a Rolex. I have gone through way too many watches at a lot of price points. And yet as a one and done watch, the IWC Mark XX stands out clearly. Improved WR on the XX is a huge deal. Then add in legibility, timeless style, date function, brand recognition, comfort. It’s also a strap monster AND makes it easy as cake to change the straps, and legit looks good on all 3 strap possibilities. The OEM rubber in particular is one of the best rubber straps I have experienced. The bracelet has an ingenious micro adjustment, and easy to size links. It really is the best and dare I say perfect one and done. For me personally I have been fortunate enough to get a VC Overseas and that would prob me MY one and done if forced, as it shares a lot of the qualities of the Mark XX. Mark XX looks better on leather strap though, and easier to size links.
@Leo-gh7nz3 ай бұрын
@@Creative-Destruction-xyz "But obviously not for those who prefer a louder statement." I think the straps help with that. The OEM orange strap looks really good with the black dial imo and really makes the watch stand out, if that's what one is going for. But I think that's why it's important for a one-and-done to be a strap monster because you're less likely to get bored with it if you can change it up frequently.

To me the best "one and done" watches that are ultimately versatile but also really attractive are the Explorer (the 39mm version) and the Aqua Terra. Can't beat them. And if you're looking for a DIVE watch you can wear under any circumstance, it has to be a Submariner. More inexpensive "one and done" watches could be a pre-owned (since they've been discontinued) Seiko SARB033 / SARB035, a Longines Spirit "time only" version or perhaps a Hamilton Khaki Field, though the Khaki is not quite as versatile as the other brands I mentioned. Tudor Black Bay 58 may work too, but I find them a little bland most of the time.

I've got VC's, AP's, Breguet's, Omega's, JLC's, Zenith's, old real Smiths - but one and done is still the good old VC Overseas first gen (ultra thin at 8.5mm, 150m WR), still better than anything VC is punting today out under the Overseas banner. They had to use a Girard-Perregaux movement. In today's market and buying today I'd go for the GP Laureato with essentially the same movement, not quite as thin, and not quite as highly rated WR, but still about the best "movement" for the money.

Planes not trains could include Glycine Airman No.1, Seagull 1963, Seiko Gen 1,and Citizen Skyhawk. The Skyhawk served me well at sea as I changed timezones regularly. It lasted 10 years before I replaced it with a newer version. I sold that watch and started my collection with a Citizen Skyhawk, blue dial in titanium. It is 45mm now and quite thick but if you can get past that, it's a great watch. The Airman has great history, being a watch linked with aviation, military and space. A cool watch which takes a bit of getting used to reading but has a lot of pedigree. The Seagull is the same movement used by studio underdog, with the history to back it up. The Seiko Gen 1 may be vintage but the movement is bullet proof as long as it isn't exposed to water.

One thing that would be cool about having a GWM5610 as a one and done watch would be the fact that it is guaranteed to always be around. If something happens to your watch you can simply buy another for $100. If production stopped tomorrow, in 30 years these probably will be accessible at a reasonable price. It's a great watch to begin with and the fact that it is robust and accessible are bonuses. If one is coming up with a personal style you could wear this watch -- or one close enough to it -- for the rest of your life.

There is no such thing as a Tudor manufacture in Switzerland. Tudor watches are not manufactured in Switzerland. They are only assembled, inspected and tested there.

Loved the video as always! For the Japanese/watch nerd/affordable $4k category I've recently come across Kurono Tokyo and Kuoe which seem really cool as well with some "one and done" options. Also, Furlan Marri's Rossi Grigio "mechaquartz" looks quite cool with a chronograph. Not all mechanical and in-house though, maybe none are but the dials are super nice.

Despite owning a dozen plus watches, the one I find wearing most is my Casio AQ-230. It has the versatile steel bracelet, is extremely thin and light due to the case material/quartz movement, and an analog dial + digital sub-display gives the best of both worlds in terms of preserving traditional aesthetics with added functionality, all in a trendy square case. It combines aspects that I enjoy about other watches: like the Cartier tank in terms of a small rectangular case, the steel bracelet and metallic case allow it to be dressed up, the quartz/digital functions allow me to leave it alone for weeks and it’s ready for use at any time, plus it’s so light/thin that it slips under sleeves and I can forget I’m wearing it. The low price also makes me not worried about banging it up or getting it scuffed. If I had to recommend someone a one and done, it would be the AQ-230.

I would also advise against buying a one only watch,that is too big,and go for one on the smaller end of a preferred size range. This is because in the long term,smaller cased watches feel more agile for day to day use and for different social settings or activities.

Great video as always. I was in this position 3 years ago. I knew nothing about watches but wanted a luxury watch for my 50th, expecting to get a Tag or Breitling as the commonly known luxury brands. I did a LOT of research and ended up with a white Omega SMP 300 which I love. What I didn't expect was also ending up becoming obsessed with Watches and now owning eight. Who needs eight watches? 😂

I'm somewhat disappointed the Glashütte Original Seaq Panorama wasn't mentioned - especially considering you had mentioned it previously on more than one occasion; I know it'll be my one and (not quite) done, tbh, in the not too distant future. I'm a "three watch collection" kind of guy. Other than that, yet another fantastic video, Mike. Yours is by far my favorite channel; I subscribed not that long ago, it seems, when you only had 20k subscribers and knew you'd be blowing up sooner rather than later. Congratulations, mate.

i agree with 99.99% you say, pretty much always you are absolutely spot on. However, I disagree with the selection of Rolex models: The Explorer 2 (particularly the new model in white) is one of the best Rolex models currently out there. It IS versatile in today's time and age. the current reference 226570 is matt and not "shiny" like the previous model (216570). It wears slightly smaller than 42mm, I'd say like 41mm. The Explorer 2 is available without long waitlists and characterising it as one of Rolex's odd-one out models is unfortunately something which is currently standard in the online lore, but it is wrong.

Great video, as usual, Mike. Maybe one category you didn't cover too much is that of good quality non-wacky microbrands. I feel a nice Lorier (Astra, Neptune, Falcon), a Nodus, a Raven, a Farer World Time, an Erebus, a Venezianico, Maen, inter alia, could need much of your love and knowledge. I know that most of them have the same movements, but, still, they have become great options for many watch nerds and could do the same with muggles.
@elosacle3 ай бұрын
I've been drooling over a Raven Endeavour II with the Pistachio dial for a hot minute. While I tend to prefer darker colors on watch dials, those watches seem like they're made so that can actually read them deep underwater. That being said, I thought for at least a year that my Vaer A5 (they make some pretty good steel bracelets, and they also have the Nodex Clasps for them on their website) would be my one and done, but I'm probably gonna be wrong about that in a month or so.

Thanks to this channel I learn more and more about watches, learn to appreciate all the technical and design nuances they have. Types of watches, tiers of manufacturers, price ranges, types of movements. Even if I weren't in need for a watch for many years until I rediscovered watch as a device to look at to know time. And to appreciate and use as a T-shirt (or suit) to transmit messages. Watches are cool.

I think there's a grand difference between an enthusiast and a collector. One can be both but being one doesn't automatically entitle you to the other. For example, I am an aircraft and flight enthusiast but I do not own a pilot's license nor an airplane. On the other hand, I am a guitar enthusiast, I love the instrument, AND I collect and own close to 20 guitars. Another example, I love cars as an enthusiast but I drive a 2009 City Golf while I googoo-eye my neighbours Rolls Royce collection. The only overlapping quality of either is knowledge - both an enthusiast and a collector can have the same knowledge.

@seanpham67 not that ot wore heavy, it was more the sharpness of the bracelet and lack of micro adjust. I dont get why Omega make suck sharp edges on their AT 41mm and Seamaster 300m 42mm - so easy to make it a bit smoother
