Composition is probably the most challenging aspect of photography. In this introductory video I give you an insight into my thinking and approach including taking a look at some recent images and breaking the techniques down.
In this video I take a look at the concepts of composition and start to talk through the use of leading lines, foreground interest, rule of thirds, use of colour, odd numbers, triangles, framing, isolation and separation and more.

Lots of information and advice for the viewer to get there teeth into Dan. Very good indeed and a good choice to focus on composition rather than technicalities. Work a scene again and a again, time dependant. That first shot of Bamburgh castle is one of my favs from you. This is a good direction of vlog for you Dan. Good stuff 👍

I strongly believe composition is the most important topic in photography and over the years I must have watched dozens if not hundreds of videos and lectures on the subject. That being said, I think this one is truly a masterpiece and will be immensely helpful to photographers and videographers of all skill levels. Thank you so much Dan for sharing this content!

I really find your explanations about composition to be verbally and visually clear. As I am listening to you your visuals are reinforcing what you are saying. This makes it much easier to understand and learn about composition. Keep up your excellent teaching technique as it helped reinforce some concepts I practice in my photography. As for the centering of the subject, you broke that rule but you followed enough "rules" to make the photo work. The "rules" are just concepts that have proven to be attractive to most humans over time. If you don't do things that stimulate these common human responses the photo will not garner much attention.

Thank you very much leandro that's a very kind compliment and genuinely very much appreciated. I am definitely slightly sporadic in creating this sort of content and perhaps need to put more effort into it which I shall try to do. I agree that quite often there's a number of videos it just breeze over the topics rather than actually trying to address them in detail.

I've subscribed, hit the bell icon and look forward to watch your upcoming videos ;) An absolutely great video about composition, by the way! Can't understand why it got 9 thumbs down. Nice greetings from Austria, Christian

Brilliant Dan, its always good to have a refresher lesson on the all-important subject of composition. I'm also pleased you have given weight to breaking the so-called rules. In the end, you have to go with instinct and what you are trying to portray and some compositions work better than others. Keep the good stuff coming!

Great stuff Dan! A lot of thought and time obviously went into this and the content is spot on and flows well. Like a lot of people I'm in the "looks right to me" school of composition, so very interesting and informative to hear about what goes into something looking "right". Btw the central composition shots definitely all work well. A lot to think about. Thanks for your efforts!

i have to say that this is the best video I have seen this year. i have gave it a like above. hope you keep the format for the rest of the series you talk about explaining with the examples of the photos will help all to see what and how to see what is important in the pictures. Always see photographiers taking just one photo for eg Thomas Heaton but us mortals are not him and taking more photos and looking at them over time we then see what we have taken differently using what did not work well to improve for the next time out.

That's an awesome comment and much appreciated. Don't be fooled by the one shot approach .. most don't actually apply this so I must admit I usually have one image in mind .. I will still visit and revisit spots, look for new compositions and walk around with the camera taking test shots ... all done so that when the light is right it's game time for those awesome images. Taking images will always lead you to improving as a photographer tho .. getting out there and really drilling into what makes your images work and what makes them fail is a process that will pay dividends in the long run! Thanks again

I have always considered the two most important keys to my photographic composition are (subject) placement and balance.
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Very much so .. I'd add light into that as that in itself is part of composition for me. Overall balance and a feeling of harmony in landscape work is generally my goal. Thanks for your comments Bruce!

Enjoyed it very informative, I thought the shot of Gaynor with the wire fence may have had a bit better balance with a glint of light on the fence. I could be talking B"££"&k's it's just a thought. (no offence meant).

I have always had a problem in my mind and the classes I have taught defining the "purpose" of composition. Is it simply to create a pleasing image? And are all the techniques and rules simply a means of achieving that goal. And if so then "what is a pleasing image?" Would be curious to hear your thoughts . . . .
@DanPearsonPhoto
@DanPearsonPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
Bruce it's a very difficult thing to define .. the purpose of an image can vary significantly but usually it has the basis to prompt or influence a human emotion in some way. That goes for everything from advertising to news shots. The goal isn't always to be pleasing but there has to be some thought at the time of taking the image as to what the intended purpose and result is. I prefer not to think of rules but as general guides .. you first have to understand the basics in my eyes of how an image is constructed generally before you can then understand how to break those guides later on in certain shots. The last thing you should ever do is stifle creativity but as with anything in life there are some images that simply don't work .. no matter how much the photographer thinks they do. Unless they are taking an image exclusively for their own purposes and desires then if the image fails to stimulate the viewers in some way it has ultimately failed. On that basis I go back to my original point that the purpose of composition is that it is a tool made to give greatest impact and clarity to a subject in the views mind.
