With 1 week to play, he currently has the highest single season completion % in Browns team history. I'm disappointed that Baker Mayfield only wears Nike shoes if they pay him. As a consumer, that makes me understand that he will wear any brand that pays him money, which means his decision is not based on real functionality and value (the things I care about as a consumer) and instead presents himself as an athlete who is bought out by the highest bid. I am not a Baker Mayfield hater - obviously he is a very talented athlete. But the real reason I would care about what a high-profile athlete wears would be that since he's at the top of the performance spectrum he knows which gear is truly the best. Since he's an excellent athlete, I would expect him to research the different brands and then choose the brand that gives him a competitive edge. If he makes decisions like this based on money, he will never be loyal to any team; he'll just follow the money. The reason I love sports is because I like to see hard work and loyalty. Sports is a metaphor for all of us about success and failure. We get excited to see success following on the heels of failure because that is how real life works; when we see our sports team excel and succeed, we believe that we can succeed too. Think about it, that is the reason Rocky Balboa is a household name in America. That is why everyone who visits Philadelphia gets a photograph of themselves doing the Rocky Pose next to the Rocky statue - because of what Rocky represents. To be honest, anytime I see an athlete being disloyal to a franchise of fans to get money or a ring, it disappoints me. Karl Malone did it when he left the Jazz to go to the Lakers for the last couple of years of his career. He was a hero in Utah and now his name is spoken by Jazz fans with regret in their voice. It's the reason fans in Cleveland burned LeBron's jersey when he left to go to Miami - not because suddenly they think he sucks as an athlete, but because they feel betrayed by the man that they cheer for game in and game out. Seeing Baker Mayfield choosing shoes and other gear based on who pays him the most makes me think that he cares about money more than loyalty; that he lacks the fundamental attribute that makes a sports fan a sports fan of a certain team...loyalty. As a guy who loves sports and cares about my team through the thick and thin, it's hard to get on board with players who only care about the money. For me at least, the guys I really look up to are the guys who never give up on their team or organization. Ya, they are few and far between, but when they come along, they really make us believe, and THAT is what sports is all about. Baker, if you ever read this (which I'm sure you probably won't) there are a lot of guys like me out there who would be a lot more interested in what gear your wearing if we knew you chose it because it was the best. Nike, if you go back to your roots (I just finished reading Shoe Dog by Phil Knight) and sell a superior product at a lower price (like the Blue Ribbon originals that you sold at track meets), you'll have my business over the competition every time. Sadly, somewhere along the line you guys lost track of your 'Why' for being in business. Now you sell on trendiness instead of real value. Not to say Nikes suck - they don't! Nike makes some great gear, but you started selling on the wrong business model somewhere along the line. I miss the good ol' days when sports wasn't about the money. It was about the game, the glory, and what you made us believe. I want to live in that world again.

@Duke_Favs I don't know - in the early days of the NFL, being in the league didn't carry a whole lot of prestige and glory. One of the reasons I like college sports so much is because it's about the team more than a certain player. Some of the best competition I've seen has been in Division II sports or even high school sports (I used to coach). Talk about heart and loyalty! Those players really put their all into each and every game for no other reason than they want their team to win - there's no money waiting for them, no high profile contract with a brand, no energy drink commercials looking to sponsor them...they just play because they have the heart to win!
