Just a note about the chauffeur... on the other video with this film, there were lots of comments about how the black guy was a 'lowly servant,' etc. It's important to remember that in those days, driving an automobile was difficult, and would have been considered a skill. If the man was a full-time chauffeur (which was likely) his job was that car in its entirety. Not just driving, but keeping it clean, and keeping it running. And maintaining a car like that would have been a daily chore. As we would think of it today, he was a combination chauffeur, mechanic, and detailer. My point is that he was a skilled worker with a respectable job, and he was probably being paid accordingly. Also it's kinda funny how he's excited to be on camera, but none of the family seem to care, and then he's kinda sad about that.

My grandfather was one of just 3 that survived out of 7 kids. His uncle had 4 that survived out of 7, but he also died in 1908, and his wife in 1912, meaning my grandfather had 4 orphaned cousins by the time he was born. It would be a real dream to find a video of them, or even a photo. Nobody's ever found a photo of my great-grandfather who died in 1913.

The thing I find hard to believe is Florian’s age. There is no way that man was in his early 40’s. Either he was lying about his age, or he led a very hard life. It is miraculous you were able to find all the information from the license plate. I was also shocked at the number of cars registered at the time.
@ClueSign Жыл бұрын
Men and women didn’t lead easy lives then. Florian was an immigrant with a fairly large family, a business with more than one location, and the lifestyle of the early 20th century including a diet heavy in red meat, possibly cigar smoking etc. It’s not improbable that along with his hairstyle, suit and hat, he looked older than 40. But I could picture him in a Yankees cap and t-shirt and he will seem younger. It’s sad that he died at 47 of ‘apoplexy’ - most likely a heart attack.

As an eager but unskilled and untrained sleuth of my own family ancestry, I am in complete awe of your knowledge and dedication to uncovering the mystery of the family depicted in this old film. You not only gave names to the faces, you gave us a window into their family’s history, hardships, and successes. I especially appreciate your efforts to identify the driver and servant. The driver’s apparent enjoyment of the novel experience of being filmed is comfortably shared with the stoic appearing patriarch of the family. That moment captured for eternity is what makes the entire seem so human and relatable. I have subscribed to your channel and am eager to begin learning from you. Thank you for sharing your gifts!

Thanks for this video! It’s so interesting. It’s odd to see Florian in this video and to know that he’s only probably in his late 30’s, early 40’s here, based on his age of death at 47. He looks to be quite an older gentleman here - possibly in his 50’s or so. His death of apoplexy or stroke/cerebral hemorrhage or blood clot. In the full version of this video shows the oddly-shaped building which is still in NYC today is the famous Flatiron Building, something I’ve walked past many times. @@wellesradio True. Especially as our current data is in digital form, and might not be existent or decipherable in a millenium!
@nintendonerdjoseph4 жыл бұрын
@Victor Bastos That doesn't mean it will last forever. These videos and our data are being stored on fragile servers made from materials that decay relatively quickly. Files start to garner problems and corruption is difficult to avoid. Unless things are being resaved over and over again, I can't imagine this data will last for very long. There's still a huge chunk of the internet forever gone as sites and platforms shut down and machinery gets damaged. The best way to preserve data is to carve it deep.into stone, and we are very limited with what we can do with stone.

When my grandparents died many years ago, one of the things left behind in their house were large old portrait photographs of a man and a woman, both in their middle ages. They’re each in antique wood and silver frames and are well over 100 years old. The issue is that nobody knows who these people were. They weren’t relatives of ours and they weren’t the previous owners of my grandparent’s house (my grandfather bought the house from his father-in-law and even he didn’t know who they were. I’ve always called them the “Old Guys” but have always thought it would be fun to find out who they really were. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
@GeneaVlogger4 жыл бұрын
If you feel comfortable taking the photographs out of their frames then looking at the edges and/or back may reveal information, especially since people sometimes wrote the names of the people and/or the year/date on the back. You can also look into consulting with a photograph specialist. Ava Cohn of Sherlock Cohn may be someone worth contacting for help, you can find out more about her at her website - sherlockcohn.com. Good luck!

If only every single person in that car could be connected to their existing relatives, imagine how gob-smacked they'd likely be. As for the driver, you can bet his is, without doubt, an interesting story, and that as this is quite so far back in history, it was a time when servants were almost rightly treated as one of the family (as here) and not what was extant only a matter of decades before. Thank you for a wonderful upload.
