Cool method for determining the windings within a transformer...I've never run into this but I can see it common occurrence (like a high voltage vintage style as shown here but also any salvaged transformer from old electronics devices)

This is why I have an isolation transformer. You can never be too safe. A deeper explanation of what you were doing might have been helpful, for example how certain ohms readings translate into the primary etc, the primary being on the mains side and info beginners may not know.

HOW DID YOU DETERMINE WHICH WINDINDS ARE THE PRIMARY?
@learnelectronics
@learnelectronics 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly by trial and error. I had a little starting knowledge. I knew it had 300V+ secondary and I knew that the primary wasn't tapped. Also the leads for filiment windings are usually heavier to carry more current. So the yellow and reds were out. That left thick and thin black. I tried both while measuring the voltage on the reds. I was wrong the first time.

PAUL I NEED TO POINT SOMETHING OUT, been just new to this myself i can probably spot the thing that would confuse you easier when 1st learning this stuff... at the beginning when you had it on the wrong setting it showed 110 "mV" now someone new to this "WOULD" mistake that as a transformer that was plugged in to the wall.. especially in the States and place's where the wall voltage is 110 VOLTS.. then you touched the bare/insulated wires.. Do ya see where im going with this. Paul i hope you don't think im being bad here.. i don't mean anything bad by it..

@@LitesLAB you can also get good transformers inexpensively by getting old stereo equipment from thrift shops. Tape decks, cd players, and dvd players usually have small (below 60 watts) and receivers and amps have much bigger - 250 watts and up. A lot of other good parts in there too. Regulators, amps, ICs, big diodes, heat sinks, etc.

Always use a lamp in series! It is nuts not to use one. Once a winding gets much over the rated voltage the transfçormer saturates and it just turns into a resistor. Without a lamp dual primaries instantly become a short. And just who has a variac, your viewers are just unknowing beginners. Shameful video.
@SteveJones172pilot
@SteveJones172pilot 4 жыл бұрын
@@opera5714 Can you explain this better? Are you saying because the current is near zero on the unterminated secondaries, the voltage approaches infinite? (Kind of like a current sense transformer without a load resistor?) if so - Is the danger just in touching an unterminated secondary?
@opera5714
@opera5714 4 жыл бұрын
@@SteveJones172pilot With a lot of wires it is easy to get confused. TWO cases: Dual primaries can be wired in series or in parallel. These must be phased properly or the primary can draw a lot of current The magnetic field from one winding cancels the other out. Applying a voltage greater than the rated secondary, like 120V AC to a 12V ac winding, causes the transformer core to saturate. As the AC waveform increases in voltage the magnetic core can no longer store more energy. The inductor saturates and turns into just a resistor. A lamp in series would limit current to a level that would be safe, at least for a reasonable time by illuminating. As the lamp heats up, the lamp resistance also increases dropping current even more that just a resistor. About a 7 times increase.
