On 25th January 1971, General Idi Amin Dada overthrew the elected government of Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, declaring himself President of Uganda. On becoming President, Amin stated that he was not a politician but a soldier and was therefore going to use the military to oversee the running of the country. Much has been said about the nature of Uganda’s army during Idi Amin’s rule, ranging from fierce brutality to extensive executions of civilians. In an exclusive interview with two retired soldiers who served in this army, we learn what really occurred in a bid to separate fact from fiction.
