I like the fact that Idi Amin was careful not to destroy Kampala and Jinja, and the bigger Ugandan economy which he had build for 9 years. Also he had no bank accounts in foreign countries including in Africa something so common to corrupt American puppet leaders who pretend to be so holy in the modern Africa governments. As I grew up what I only thought I knew of Idi was that he was a 'barbarian' and used to eat people's flesh! The western propaganda mechanism indeed is so strong but cannot break the reality of history. Today I thank God I am able to find the truth and reason out of my own consciousness

@@Sebastian1018 it is unfortunate you took the journal smear rhetoric for the truth. It is true he was ruthless but there is NO evidence he was a cannibal. The British influenced his becoming head of state and they thought he was a perfect puppet to serve their interests in Uganda and the Great Lakes region. That’s why when Obote was in Singapore he was told in the same conference that one of you won’t be going back to your country’s as head of state. How did they know that? Amin loved his country he had Ugandans at heart. We are proud of his efforts. The British wanted to build apartheid-like Uganda where their replacement of the Asian traders were masters and aboriginal Ugandans as slaves. Our elders tell us all how they were cheated by these Asian traders when they sold their produce. Places were demarcated which were no go zone black Ugandans. Those who served the Asian elites were treated worse off than slaves. Amin himself as he was growing his family was a victim of Asian mistreatment when working for Mehta. We are lucky he caused a disruption in this. This angered the British and every effort was invested in pulling him down including propaganda. Come to Uganda and compare the Asians in Uganda today they are reformed because of Amin go to Kenya you will be surprised how the Kenyan Asians mistreat the black Kenyans. He had his weak points his enemies capitalised on that to maximally malign him. The contemporary Ugandan is proud of him and his contribution than some pawns. He established corporations which employed masses despite his struggling economy his government established the Uganda airlines, introduced colour TV broadcast a technology which was rare at the time, built an earth satellite which eased telecommunications, he established the diary corporation, boasted cooperatives and several others. He was fought from all corners including withholding importation of house hold basic commodities like soap which at the time came from Kenya.

Jesus, no he didn't. He realised that he was about to be found responsible for financial misappropriation, and THAT is why he stood up against Obote. And yet a lot of the population believed then, and somehow in spite of the catalogue of atrocities he was responsible for, still believe now, that he was a good leader who had the people's interests at his heart.

He never spent a single hour repenting or paying for his crimes and genocide.
@TheYakubh

Idi Amin was telling the truth about his financial status. But it seems you have a very hard time believing a sitting African President can be poor. The 'evidence' you provided about the purported 'goodies' that were apparently lavished on him by the Saudi Arabia government should be FACTUAL. In case there is an iota of truth on your claim, that his 'financial status' you sensationally put as much more improved, then you should have done a proper research and be aware that the timings of the interview and his life in Saudi are different. This interview was done around 1977. And he relocated to Saudi after 1979. In case you're tempted to come up with credible 'facts' to back up your claim, which I doubt you have, it will not have any impact on his remarks. Idi Amin was a Muslim way since his childhood. This is another fact that discredits the lie where you purport that he 'converted' to Islam while in Saudi Arabia. And just to sum things up, President Idi Amin never looted from the Uganda coffers as is the tradition with African Presidents. He was quite strict and never entertained any form of corruption. When President Idi Amin left Uganda:- The entire Uganda Road network was without a single pothole. He left a working health sector. All hospital services were operational. The theatres were working and government pharmacy was fully stocked with drugs and medicines. The National carrier he had established during his rule was so profitable. In fact Uganda Airlines was still functional several years later. Even through the bloody power wrangles that followed his departure. He left a very strong currency. Uganda shilling was equal to the Kenya shilling. It during a very bloody era after him when civil fight broke out that inflation rate went out of control. Five years, from 1980 to 1985, internal strife ushered in the rules of Milton Obote, Godfrey Binaisa, Yusuf Lule, Tito Okello and finally Yoweri Museveni. His track record was beyond exemplary. And many of the media photos of purported military personnel harassing the masses were staged. Underground factional rebel groups, some led by the current President were engaging in massacre and formenting civil strifes, creating propaganda campaigns alongside the western media Hard to relate, all throughout, Uganda remained peaceful until when the Tanzania Army drove their tanks into Kampala.

@Ben Campbell He was a thorn in the flesh of the West. That's just a Western smear campaign against him. We Ugandans know what a statesman he was.

I've had a 26 year-old as a Facebook friend from Mityana for several years now. He and i are collaborating on a photo documentary on his region and lifestyle there. All he has ever told me is that he can't wait to escape from Uganda, "A terrible place right now to try to raise a family." With all its many resources and wonderful people, one has to wonder what is REALLY going on there, and what part its past leadership/imperialism has to play in that legacy...despite Amin's brittle claim it was the "media" who destroyed his country.

He was the best President of Uganda we ever had. All those demonized documentations you see.. are bse Amin refused to let Israelites to stay in Uganda. He gave them 24hrs to leave Uganda. He was the best for Uganda and Africa.

Note that 185000 Ugandans fled to the UK to escape Amin''s killings. (BBC Blog), Some 12000 Ugandans fled Amin to come to Canada. (These are Africans, not Uganda Asians.) Read the book "War in Uganda - The Legacy of Idi Amin" by Tony Avirgamn and Martha Honey. I knew many of the people personally and find the book very credible. Then there is the touching book "The teeth may smile but the heart does not forget - Murder and Memory in Uganda" by Andrew Rice who writes the story of Duncan Laki, a Ugandan who returns to Uganda to search for the murderer of his father.

When he invaded Tanzania, the country was caught off guard, 25,000 poor Tanzania citizens were killed by this monster's army. And here you are supporting him? Are you out of your stupid mind? You are horrible individual.
