I work in a welding shop with all kinds of compressed gasses (argon, CO2, acetylene, etc.) and all the tanks have to be chained to a wall or a welding machine for safety. Never transport cylinders like this lying down in the bed of a truck or where they can roll away or fall over. The tank WILL become a missile and many people have been hurt and killed by this sort of accident.

Geoff Green acetylene was always fun. In class if we left it or the oxygen loose with out the caddy or anchored in some way they said it was an automatic expulsion from the school. 16psi takes out a 1,000ft area in a big enough tank from self ignition. Two groups a semester got expelled for lack of safety especially for the one group setting a lit torch on the cement floor next to the HVAC compressor full of refrigerant creating phosgene gas. Miss the days of playing with the oxyacetylene and propyacetalyne in class to braze in line sets.

The first baloon (red) is a dud because it is just the air which was in the bottle before. The second one (orange) is also mostly air but at least ingnitable, still no comparison to 100% hydrogen though. The Toilet cleaner stuff is a really poor choice for hydrochloric acid, it has thickening agents and detergents which make it a foamy mess as seen in the episode (9:10). There is just not enough water in the cleaner to absorb the heat and dissolve the aluminiumcloride. Just use clean hydrochloric acid aka muriatic acid and dillute it down or a dillute solution of sodiumhydroxide aka lye as used in the bone-dissolving episode. You probably don't want to use aluminium strips, balls provide more control over the reaction to prevent heating up the solution to much or boiling. The glass jar was a good call, chemically the plastic bottle is stable for both lye and hydrochloric acid, but the heat would've definitly destroyed it. The last episodes involving chemistry were a little nerve wrecking on the safety side. You can really hurt yourself even with household chemicals, just mix your hydrochloric acid containing cleaner with some bleach and you got your personal WWI in your bathroom, but I really love your show and hope you keep up with the good work.

A mixture of H2 Hydrogen and O2 Oxygen is much more explosive. This mixture (2:1) is called Knallgas (german term for Bang-Gas) and was once used for welding, too. At atmospheric pressure the autoignition occurs at about 570C or 1065F. Have fun!! Greetings from Germany!

Sort of. With Elephant's Toothpaste, you're usually using yeast, to extract Oxygen from Hydrogen Peroxide. That's why it tends to explode, rather than burn. Doing it this way is far easier to control. The column builds slower, and holds its shape better... and it burns slower.

I have no idea if you will see this, but I hope someone does, once the cap is removed from a gas cylinder, especially one with flammable gas, it should ALWAYS be chained up to prevent it from falling over and breaking the regulator off the top and going through walls and such, which is why the cap is on there in the first place. NEVER PICK UP AN UNCAPPED TANK AND MOVE IT LIKE THAT! If Brian had dropped that or tripped it could have been a very very bad day.

Making it is a smaller bottle seems to work better (wine bottle size or so) and using aluminum, water, and pure lye also works well. One more thing is that you can light the top of the bottle on fire and the hydrogen can be produced fast enough to maintain the flame at the mouth of the bottle for quite a while (at least in my experience). Awesome and hilarious video!

Hey guys! Another way to get hydrogen is through the electrolysis of water. Mix sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) into the water, run an electric current through the mixture with two electrodes, and gaseous oxygen and hydrogen (if it exists) will be released. The 02 will come from the cathode (positive electrode) and H2 will come from the anode (negative electrode). Just thought I'd share this because it's easier to get the supplies (since high concentrated hydrochloric acid is hard to come by and expensive), more efficient than using drain cleaner, and a lot safer than using either of the previous methods since there's no exposure to acidic chemicals. My highschool chemistry teacher did the following, only with methane (from the gas valves in the classroom): Take a rubber tube (commonly used in chemistry) and attach is to the fuel source ( in your case the hydrogen tank), and on the other end attach a funnel (with the small bit on the hose and the large bit on the end). Ensure that the attachment between the funnel and the hose is sealed as not to allow gas to escape. Next, take a small bin and put dish soap in it with some water (or some bubble mixture stuff). Take the large, open, end of the funnel and dip it in the solution to that you get a bubble lining the oppening of the funnel. Now turn on the hydrogen tank (slowly as not to fill the bubble too rapidly and cause it to break). Congratulations, you now have an apparatus that will creat hydrogen bubbles which will rise, and you can us an ignition source to light is as it rises. My chem teacher simply used a candle taped to a meter stick.
