I Have always avoided Idling the engine. Run the APU and keep the Bunk heater blasting away. If yours does not heat the cabin then it is not working correctly. I also run a Pete and my bunk heater is good for anything our weather can throw at it. But if you are going to keep the Pete for a while do not idle as it really does not help the powerplant, no matter what make it is.

It is so nice to listen and watch your videos. Last week I commented on another video of yours about problems with the truck and how I also have some issues. Thanks for your reply for that.So like you, this is the first time I am driving a peterbilt and before that I was driving friegtliner. So last week i went to Springfield PETERBILT. Took them 2 days and I stayed in hotel and no one called me and when I called they said it is ready to go. Took the truck got a load and realized that they still didn't fix the main two issues. So back again at Springfield peterbilt yesterday and waiting at hotel now. They said it may take 3 to 4 days..Hope this time they will be able to fix it. I am not sure you had these problems..so the issues I have now are.. 1.once I connect to an empty or loaded trailer and if I am on straight road the truck stays in 1100rpm and it vibrate, Rattle so bad. Steering, engine..i can feel it in my nerves, feet it is terrible..when I am going downhill or uphill it is completely fine or once it go above 1100rpm. Since this is my first pete I am not sure it is a normal thing. 2nd thing is my lane departure system doesn't work at night..it works perfectly fine at day time and when there is enough street lights at night. But when i am on interstate at nights and only headlights are on it doesn't work..not sure it has anything to do with led lights. . Daybefore I realized another thing it is really cold inside the truck even with the bunk heater on and I realized that there is air coming inside through the driver side bunk bed Door. I love this truck but I feel that there are so many small things which doesn't fit properly. Like you mentioned in that other video I think that they rushed these trucks after covid . Thank you for all your videos and stay safe out there.

Yes, same issues. 1) the rattle. Yes, I get that when running 63 mph or lower. I manually switch it to 11th. At 65 it's better until I start up a hill. 2) Prime had to move the LDW eye on the windshield down a little and fixed it. 3). The bunk isn't insulated at all! It's terrible. As for the door, you have to really slam it closed. If you don't, it'll seem closed but it isn't. But even when fully closed, you'll still get a draft when it's this cold.

For when you do your inside tour video, as a suggestion if you need more things to show, I wouldn't mind seeing a daily routine type of thing such as what you do when you wake up, get ready to start the day, what do you eat, and coffee or morning exercise/stretching routines before 10 hours of driving, when you would take a break and what you eat throughout the day, what you cleaning routines of the inside of the truck are (like any disinfecting or wiping things down), how you go about washing any linens like bed sheets etc (a quick laundry video would be cool too), and then finally how you get ready to settle in for the night (what shows or video would you watch) and getting settled into bed. Not trying to sound weird or anything, just generally curious what its like since I'm thinking of getting into trucking. Maybe this could be a whole separate video then the tour video.

If it's below 10f is better to idle diesel motors don't like the cold, that's a real hard start at -1 and in extreme cold 0 or below is best to idle at 800 rpm to keep engine warm, and some one is seriously lying to you about that 15000, a dpf change out runs approx 1000 to 1800 depending on the state you're in
@romeo1620063 жыл бұрын
Simple the instant the engine turns over the alternator is producing power. Put your Convertor to work. A 400W personal heater from just about any store works about as well as a bunk heater. DO NOT USE IN PLACE OF BUNK HEATER....in the Cold the Temps reduce total battery AMPS and you possibly won't be able to crank your truck at all. So I crank the bunk heater to 90 and when I start sweating I pull the blankets off and open the curtains let the hot and cold air mix for up to 15 minutes, While still under the covers. Start engine then turn on my electric heater to maintain heat then I Idle up my truck AFTER I check my oil pressure I bump the Idle to 1200 to 1400 to warm it up. Don't use the in cab heaters at all make sure they are OFF COLD METAL JUST MAKES COLD AIR. Wait on the coolant temp to hit 150+ then blast heaters. Best idle i have found for speed of warming is 1300 RPMs 5 to 7 minutes is enough.
@JJtheTrucker3 жыл бұрын
I did do that the other day when it was really cold and the truck was snow covered, but it's not good for these trucks to warm up like that. I wouldn't want to do it regularly. But on the really cold mornings yeah, I'd do it lol.

I've been driving 33 years ..ive drivin the old trucks , new trucks and everything in between..the new trucks and engines are seriously a pain in the ass and id much rather run an old 3406 cat with straight exhaust thats for sure but instead im driving a 2018 579 Pete with the paccar motor and that definitely complicates the trucking experience if you will ..but I always bump my idle up to at least 800 - 850 even if I'm just stopping for fuel. The problem with low idle these new engines is raw fuel getting past the doc and going straight into your dpf and saturation of the filter will occur.this will cause higher and extreme Temps in your dpf possibly coding out when you start rolling again ..theconly way to prevent the raw fuel buildup is to run your truck at a higher idle . Idleing for 1 or 15 min on low idle is fine but anything past that bumping up the idle will for sure prevent this issue. You will know when this raw fuel in the dpf is an issue because u will start seeing blue smoke for a min after it starts to regen.

Can you not get Webasto water heaters in the US. Like a bunk heater but bigger plumbed into the engine cooling system at a convenient point, they keep the whole water system at about 100f, leave the cab blower on low and it feels like idling but for a fraction of the fuel, replacing the need for both bunk and block heaters. Been about in Europe for 30 years but then idling is illegal in some countries here, and fuel costs too much to do it anyway.

Sounds like you want a bigger bunk heater or better insulation. Also regarding heating the engine up, could you not get a block heater that is wired off the APU? If you get the engine to temp quicker you get to optimum efficiency quicker
@JJtheTrucker3 жыл бұрын
The bunk heater in this truck takes in cold air frum under the bunk unlike in the Freightliner where it took in warmed up air from the bunk itself. That doesn't help. A block heater is an option upon ordering the truck and may be a good idea for these situations.

@xxxx8380 Жыл бұрын
I think this is a myth, or it's based off sloppy old 15 liter engines from back in the day with weak oil pumps. These new engines like the mx are tight tolerance and I seriously doubt paccar would design an engine to have less than adequate oil pressure at any idle speed.

Why won’t 579 Pete idle at all in park. So frustrating
@JJtheTrucker3 жыл бұрын
It's the setting. If you're with Prime, it's set to 5 minutes unless it's under 30 or above 90 degrees outside. If you're not under anyone else's rules/authority, the dealership can change it to whatever you want. But... Idling shortens the life of the engine ($$$) , you need your PMs much sooner ($$) and it uses a lot more fuel ($$).

great video, did some reading ya i did, Diesel octane is 45, heard and read if you can get the octane above 50 you can go more than 80,000 without a regeneration on the DPF filter, so far a driver has, now, doing the winter in cold climate areas of the country, truck stops add 10 percent Kerosene to the diesel to keep it from gelling up, but this lowers the octane level and your'l get worse fuel milage, so what do you do, i read ( Hot Shot Secret ) Diesel fuel Treatment will add up to 7 octane level to the fuel to 52 octane, but the winter gel will be less than 5 octane level i'm sure, its cheaper to buy the 2 GAL jug only adds 2 or 3 cents per gallon to the truck, NOW, ( Power Source) fuel treatment costs more but only gives you up to 5 octane level boost, not cost affective, look on the web, (O'Reilly auto parts) has the lowest price

Idling is not good for any engine, and can be very detrimental to diesel engines. Idling can cause many issues, with one in particular being that the water temperature falls to low, and then the fuel isn't properly burned, and that washes the oil from the cylinders, causing excessive wear on cylinder liners, pistons, rings, and miscellaneous other internal parts. If you don't believe me, ask the engine manufacturers themselves. If you must idle for any length of time, do so at a fast idle, somewhere around 1000 RPMS. Most of my life has been around, selling, and operating diesels, from growing up in a family owned trucking company, to owning a John Deere Dealership, and using that equipment on our own farms, beginning with our first diesel JD tractor, in 1968.

Yeah that “10 hour-regen required” thing someone told you was bs. I applaud you for actually reading through your owners manual and seeking answers. But unfortunately, following everything in the owners manual is not what I would call “recommended”. I find it to be maintenance schedules that make Paccar money. They say you can go 75k miles on an oil change for on highway applications...75k on regular truck stop/bulk oil is going to be degraded wayy before that. They just use it as a selling point to fleets, because those fleets just see it as saving money. Plus they just sell the trucks after 3 years anyway. Before emissions, idling overnight just was prematurely wearing the engine out. But now with emissions, it wears out the emissions system and all related sensors on the engine, much much faster. Regardless of what rpm you are idling at. The point of idling higher at night is to get the exhaust temperature higher to burn as much soot as it can, before it ultimately has to do a regen. For keeping a truck long term, an APU is really the only option that is worth while. Selling the truck in 3 years? Just idle it, it won’t be your problem.

It's when the truck intentionally slows you down so you can't go highway speeds. It's to urge you to pull over somewhere safe to do or check something.

I used to own a VW diesel Jetta. It would do a automatic regeneration while I was driving. If I turn the engine off during regen it would have to start all over again. Short trips in my Jetta was not good for it

Hey JJ. Question , Do you know if when fuel prices rise , does the price of freight per mile go up as well ... as the prediction is $5 - five dollars a gallon for gas and $6. Six dollars for diesel by Memorial Day.

Michael, I have not been around long enough to have a good solid answer for that yet. Based on any other industries that uses transportation, rates do go up, fuel surcharges go up, and inflation occurs. I do know that Prime has a calculation for their fuel supplement that is more advantageous when fuel prices are higher. Beyond that, I do not know.

HOW DO THE FREAKIN BUNK HEATER EVEN WORK?
@JJtheTrucker2 жыл бұрын
They work by pumping in Diesel from your tanks into a small metal tube that has a small heating coil inside of it. That ignites and burns the diesel. Surrounding that metal tube is an air chamber with a fan. Cold air is pushed through the Chamber and heated by the hit metal tube, then blown into cab of the truck. The whole thing is about the size of a 2 liter bottle and is installed under the bed. Pretty amazing if you ask me. 😊

Diesels are made to run at high idle the worse thing for a diesel is stopping. & starting idle at about 900 RPMs
@JJtheTrucker3 жыл бұрын
Maybe the older diesel engines or other brands need the higher idle, which is what Prime is thinking, but this one doesn't. It's all based on the temp and as long as it's high enough, idle low. At least with this engine. Can't speak for the others.

@@JJtheTrucker Ok. Cool.
@romeo1620063 жыл бұрын
Cams and Crank shafts used to be balanced a bit differently along with other parts. Newer engines are designed to idle and run at full torque at much lower rpms to allow fuel to completely expand once lit to be considerably more efficient as compared to higher RPM engines that used more torque to wheels via higher RPMS when fuel was much less of a percentage of your gross deduction. SO BASICALLY Regulation has led to a massive engine over haul. New generation of truckers that have incompatible knowledge to old school trucks. And old truckers teaching new school and hate these new trucks because it doesn't fit what decades of experience tells them is correct. So new DPF systems that finally work pretty well have a very bad reputation.

Well it doesn't matter, you can't follow the book working for these companies. They have it set not to idle at all and im not going to sit there and push a peddle all morning to get it to operating temp, I don't get paid for enough of all the free shit i do. I'm out here to make money, f their, we're family, only when they need something. I agreed to run their equipment and cargo with the understanding that if im not making enough money i have to take my happy ass somewhere that i can make my money. Its completely transactional, and its just business.

I reviewed the vid and you may want to watch it again. The pressure was at 0 when the truck was off. As soon as I started the engine, it went up to 40 and was there the entire time the engine was running. Did you see something I missed there?
