Yes I can relate to this. Saying “I love you” is not a regular habit in Asian family culture. Asian parents often live in such a way where acts of service are the proof of their love. Cooking for us, providing for us, clothing us, doing everything they can to make sure we are better off than they were. Pushing us to study so we do well in school, so we get good jobs, so we don't have to starve, so we can be healthy, so have a roof over our head and a bed to sleep on. I know this because the question is always, "Have you eaten? Are you healthy? Are you getting enough sleep?" I am biased, but Asian parents are the embodiment of "actions speak louder than words."

Plus most of indonesian languages dont even have the word to express love in a less-romantic way, such as 'sayang' in standard bahasa. Like in my language we only have the romantic one ('cinta' in standard bahasa). Saying 'sayang' would be really awkward as I only speak my mother tongue to my family and saying the romantic one would be weird af. lol

For me saying in english is much okay but when saying in malay the feel totally different. As Indonesian, we can't really say i love you, "Aku sayang papa/mama" easily Not because we don't want, but it's too hard to say. It has deep meaning for us and our culture. We usually say "jaga diri baik-baik"(take care), to ends our facetime, call or short meeting. When it comes to "i love you", trust me it'll come with tears along... When a daughter or a son cries, we don't wanna show it, even if we had bad day, situation. we don't wanna make our parents sad and crying too.. I'm Indonesian, the words "I love you" and "I miss you" is always making me cry so I often avoid to say that directly 😂 Instead of that I express those words as "How are you?" "How do you do?" and things like that. If I really want to say I love you or I miss you, I write it in the letter. TO AVOID THE TEARS YES HAHA

I'm not Asian but it is probably bc languages that aren't English usually hold more weight. Aku Sayang mama probably has slightly deeper meaning than just "I love you". it's so weird bc I grew up with French in my household so I know about difference in language and stuff like that.

I believe that's because as Indonesian, we don't say "aku sayang kamu" that much, and from what i've learn that when you speak english , "I love you" is something that everyone can say to everyone. It's not "literally" everyone but from that example we know that english speaker having the "parabole" habbit that sometimes make a word doesn't sound/feel as deep as it should be specially when we compare the english word with the litterally translation word in other language. It's only my opinion, and sorry if there is anyone who disagree with me
