Looking back, a lot of people think that Russell's edit in Samoa was overbearing or "too much," but you gotta realize that while editing Samoa, production knew that they were bringing Russell back for HvV in the next season (and that he makes it to the end). They HAD to make him the star of the season so fans would appreciate his return and treat him as an All Star like some of the huge names we saw that season. If they would've highlighted Natalie's social game, Dave's humor, Brett's immunity run at the end, Shambo's character, etc., fans may have not welcomed Russell as an All Star or saw him as undeserving to be on such an iconic season. Samoa is essentially the origin story of supervillain Russell Hantz because production NEEDED to contextualize his role in HvV.
@berouja

Yeah at the expense of the season's narrative and the other players that season. It was so shortsighted on the producer's side and a big insult to the winner of the season.

@@berouja And I COMPLETELY agree with that take. I was merely contextualizing Russell's edit in Samoa because a lot of people only look at the season and forget to recognize the bigger picture of Survivor as an entire television show.

It would even be considered one of the best seasons with a good edit. The Foa Foa comeback is one of the best comeback stories that played out organically without a bottle twist or god idol. Had they done it right, Russell would still be considered robbed but in an Aubry way where you could debate his loss.

It is crazy how there have been so few female main characters in Survivor other than Kathy, Stephenie and maybe Cirie/Kim/Natalie. I can’t think of anyone else that has been OTT on their season, the most recent example is probably Aubry in Kaoh Rong but even then there was a lot of focus on Tai.

No bullshit though, Coach flipping Cochran was absolutely brilliant. He completely read every card in Cochran's hand, and then instead of gloating about it, used it as a way in, telling Cochran he knew how he felt (being bullied, etc.). There was plenty of cringe in Coach's game that season, but flipping Cochran was Grade A Survivor.

I think we should also include Ozzy for being the subject of so many confessionals. He may not have had the highest number himself, but nearly every confessional in his first three seasons (especially the second two) are about him up until he’s voted off anf officially leaves the game. The world revolved around Ozzy and his superhuman abilities. It was very entertaining but also a little sad how everyone talked so much about Ozzy that we barely got to truly get to know the other contestants. Even when he was perfectly safe from being eliminated, almost every confessional on his tribe was about him and how he’s so amazing. I’d be interested to know what the exact percentages are of confessionals revolving around him

Disagree about Rob's tribe being more receptive to working with a returning player. 2 of them immediately ruled out working with him. Many of the Zapataras said they wanted to work with Russell, but je came out of the gate aggressive and wasn't a great leader the way Rob was to his tribe. I think you also gotta remember how they were viewed. Russell was viewed as a bully and a villain while Rob got a hero edit in HvV. Idk if Rob wins if he goes to Zapatara, but I highly doubt Russell does much better on ometepe and I think Rob still at least makes merge. At the very least I don't see them throwing a challenge to get rid of him.

I don't know if Russell does succeed if he would've gone to Ometepe instead, because one of the main keys to Rob doing so well there was his correctly knowing how to handle a loose cannon like Phillip, and I seriously doubt Russell would be able to work with Phillip in the same way
@jdtham3088
@jdtham3088 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is that with the mafioso type role they always try to focus on the next big player who fits that role because it has created some of the most popular characters ever Like: Tony Rob and Russell. Because Men have more tendencies to think better of themselves than women do, they come off more confident for example: Russell, ace, coach, JP, skupin, Phillip, or Chris from ghost island. This just to name a few men from survivor with overconfidence in themselves and these overconfident people much of time make the biggest moves because of there confidence which creates good tv and then they also fail a lot creating interesting blindsided and characters to laugh at like: Coach, Phillip, or Chris, these people lighten the mood and as this is like real life can remind you of people who are to confident and crazy. On the other side the best Women player are almost always great at making connections with those they vote out and manipulating people into thinking they have control when in all actually the Women has control. These slight manipulations lead to a less in your face interesting to a casual viewer strategy, that means some of the “worse winners” in the viewers eyes are women who manipulated others: Sophie, Natalie, Michelle, amber. In Three of these four cases the women Winner defeated the Most popular, and dominating character of the season strategically to the Viewers eye. Natalie let Russell be upfront and rude, while she made bonds with the people she voted out, they all came to hate Russell and she won, effectively tricking Russell into thinking he was going to win. With Sophie she knew Coach was full of himself and let him take credit for many moves making people mad at him, when much of it was her idea, effectively beating Coach by making him look like the villain, but also taking his respect by undermining his choices. Or you have amber who developed a relationship with the possibly most upfront player ever in Rob, winning because he was the Villain even though she works with him. Because of men’s overconfidence the editors make them the main characters as they lose being overconfident and women go under the radar manipulating socially for wins being ignored by editors, when they are good players, because most casual fans only appreciate consistently big moves, even if there bad ones.

Nitpick, but i'm not sure woo was guaranteed a win against kass
@Lotus_RT

Woo was guaranteed to win against Kass in Cagayan. Multiple things justify this to be the outcome as well. - Kass herself knew she was never going to win in Cagayan (she herself knew that the jury would never vote for her). - Jeff took a jury poll at Cagayan's reunion to see who would vote for Woo/Kass. 8/9, including Tony, said they'd vote for Woo.

I also believe Russell received more confessionals because his game play was not only entertaining but revolutionary for the game of Survivor. Russell was the first survivor to find not only one but multiple hidden immunity idols without clues (Gary had an idea of where the idol was in Guatemala based on Judd looking in the trees) and played a game that was so shocking, strategic, and simply unheard of at the time. Russell even said in one of his KZbin videos that one of the producers (I don't recall the name exactly) said something similar to "You saved this show." I've re-watched Survivor Samoa several times but I just can't understand or see why anyone would vote for a player to win simply because she was likable person instead of a player who dominated the game with hidden immunity idols and played an incredible strategic game on paper (bitter much?)

The reason you don’t understand it is the same reason Russell lost both times because he didn’t understand it either. You have to play to the jury you have and not the jury you think you should have. Outwit and outlast don’t mean a damn thing if you don’t out play! Part of the game play is relationships; the players that fail to recognize that historically lose, just ask Russell.
@NYChica23
@NYChica23 3 жыл бұрын
It's extremely easy to understand why Russell lost and Natalie won...all one really has to do to get the point is to not focus on the flashy moves/idol plays Russell made and instead concentrate on his interactions with the people he played with. If you've ever read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People, applying all of the principles in there to your Survivor game will go a long way, because ultimately, the key to winning is to know how to read your jury and tailor your game accordingly. If you have a jury who's mostly going to value strategic play, be bold and out there and make the power plays, but if your jury is leaning more towards valuing social game, then take the time to get to know/have conversations with the people you're putting on the jury, and don't treat them like chess pieces that you can just put away or toss to the side when you have no use for them

The problem with Rob C is that he used his platform to be horribly sexist.

Fortunately, back when it originally aired people had the ability to understand context and took it as humor so it was a non issue. I'm glad that in this video he specifically points out that Rob C "never came off as mean spirited".

Survivor really is a microcosm for society, it baffles me ALL THE TIME seeing the sexist,homophobic, and racist norms in the old seasons...😔To forward progress!!!!!!!!🤞🏼

@@maybe6604 yeah I would say there are a lot more micro aggressions, and subtle racially ignorant or homophobic things in more recent seasons. But in old seasons some people did not try to hide their ignorances AT ALL. Which is pretty much how society has changed in the last two decades. Granted there are people who are blatantly bigoted but those are fewer and farer between than they used to be. Nowadays it’s “I’m not homophobic but that gay guy better not look at me funny” “I’m not racist but every black person in poverty is a thug and dangerous” “I’m not sexist but I only know how to respect men and every woman I meet must work 10x as hard to earn it”

A commentary season like Boston Rob and Sandra, but with Russell Hantz and the edit makes him look like he still doesn't understand social game and never predicting the right vote offs and why. Ultimately ending with him be confused at how the winner got to become the winner as his cohost tries to break it down to him to no avail.

Russel didn't know because in his best 2 seasons he was playing back to back, he didn't know that he had lost samoa so he just played the exact same way for heroes vs villians. The idea being they are going to respect my game and vote for me again like in samoa.

The survivor producers sure do have a type; if you’re a cis white male with an ego the size of Texas who would probably sell his mother for a few dollars but some how is also just a kind family man then you will get the most inflated edits ever. Not surprisingly there isn’t a woman, POC, or LGBTQ person in sight. Do better survivor; your maintenance of the status quo is nauseating. I will say that I don’t mind Rob C. and he kinda breaks the toxic mold on the list.

I do honestly believe Tony and Woo agreed secretly to split the money. That’s why Woo took Tony. Because I believe they both agreed to split the million regardless and he either had a guaranteed half million or a chance at getting nothing. No one is stupid and even if you watch Woo play again you understand he is not this stupid. There is no way there wasn’t some type of agreement between both of them.

Players are NOT allowed to split the money. Tony would've had to forfeit the money if he conspired to give half to Woo. It's been a rule since the first season.

@@adamsbriee6330 I'll admit, Russell isn't the most savory or liked character; for obvious reasons, but he got to the end by amazing strategic gameplay and by having power over his tribe. The game isn't about making friends. People should respect that he actually got to end and not be salty because they'd like to be in his position. Definitely not by being a goat.
