That may be because his mother was brought up in Sierra Leone where her Ghanaian parent's lived. She was most likely born in Sierra Leone, and possibly her parents never took her to visit Ghana either, so she didn't have that tradition to pass onto Idris. In his current TV sitcom on Sky, which I understand is part autobiographical, his mother is cast as a Ghanaian married to a Sierra Leonian, and regularly uses Ghanaian phrases.
