As much as I like to see a really well restored, immaculate, concours car, it is just as good to see an ordinary example that is actually used as a mode of transport, instead of a trailer queen.

I have fond memories of a company car I had, a 1.6 diesel estate version. It was L spec and in a soft sky blue. I clocked up 1400 miles a week in the thing, visiting contract sites around Greater London, and it was just marvellous at it. They were comfortable enough to sit in for long periods of time, the 1.6 non-turbo diesel was outstandingly economical, doing 60mpg on a motorway run and well over 40mpg in town. Admittedly, you had to wring its neck to get any performance out of it, but that was no great chore, and being a robust diesel it suffered no problems at all. These engines were later increased in capacity (1.8?), but the 1.6 was 'good enough' and even a bit better in some ways. If I could find a good'un at a price in my modest budget, I'd happily get it for use today. Back then, Ford was on a roll. New models, with those fabulous origami lines and decent driving qualities... as if out of nowhere by comparison to the RWD range.

I had a 1.8GL diesel in 1989 as a company car. Did 95,000 miles in 3 years without any of the problems past cars had given me. Averaged about 45 mpg despite absolutely hammering it for my work all over Wales. Comfy seats, good driving position and more importantly it started first time, every time in the winter and ticked over from cold in the way carburettor petrol cars often didn’t in those days. It was also superb in snow due to heavy front end and narrow tyres.

Lovely to see a Mk3 GL, GL, Ghia ,XR , RS had the additional warning lights that lesser models did without. Windscreen washer level, brake pad wear warning lights, neighbour had one exactly the same but it was a 1.6GL it had a 5-speed box as standard. But was Forest Green! Another good bit of work Steph!👍

We still have Escort III-V on the roads in Ukraine. They were brought used in the 90s. Age, rust and welding have battered them badly, but nevertheless they drive and are used for their intended purpose, although they are already 40 years old. A friend of mine owned a 1.6L Escort IV, the car had no problems except for the carburetor. It should be noted that initially there was a injection system on it, but when something in it became unusable, then in 90% of cases, a Solex carburetor from Lada 2108-2109 was simply installed. Thanks Steph for the review.

What a lovely, honest car! I liked these cars when they were new, and still rate them today. How I remember them breaking cambelts too; it was a common fault at the time. I seem to remember Ford bringing out a modification which cured the problem. Where I used to work, we were able to remove the cylinder head in less than 15 minutes! Yes, really! Try that on modern car! Best memory I have is of a customer complaining about the hard ride of his new Escort. Maybe if they had taken the blocks of wood out of the coil springs at the pre-delivery inspection....! Happy times! Great video as always!

I just bought a relatively low mileage generation one Escort GT, it's the American cousin of the Mk3 featured here. Escort was a top seller in America for many years and I had several positive comments on it during my drive to trailer it back to my shop. I look forward to many years of enjoyment and people approaching me at fuel stops to look at it and tell me about the one that they had.

This brings back memories, my father had the same spec car. I found it better to drive than the MK2 it replaced, and even more so as a passenger. For me, of all the fwd versions, the MK3 was the best looking externally, and while there were definitely improvements in later versions, it wasn't consistent with some areas improving and others not as good. For me the best package would have been the Orion Ghia version of the MK3 with the 1.8 injected engine and gearbox from a later version. Now that would be an interesting resoration/upgrade project!

A friend of mine has a 1.3L Escort mk3 with 14,000 genuine miles. It’s been in his family since new and was bought new by his (now deceased) granny. It’s rarely used nowadays though. it’s amazing to think you could buy these for £100 or less back in the day. Great memories of my XR3i’s. I’d buy them for less than £500 and buy another when it broke or the MOT ran out. Who’d have thought they would become so rare and valuable 😳

Much like yourself Steph I've never been a huge ford fan but these really do represent the British landscape of my childhood. I think a lot of Ford's of this era (including the Escort) looked very contemporary at the time yet have aged well with a nice neat design. I always though the MK4 interior looks much better but the MK3 tail light are way cooler with those ribs looking so 80's. The nails in the ash try is a nice touch. I did once see a car where the owner had kept a deceased relatives cigarette butt in the ash try which is probably gross to most of us but absolutely priceless to the relative preserving a family memory.

It’s nice to see a Mk3 Escort that looks like they did back in the day. I’ve owned two Mk3 Escorts in the distant past. An early W reg 1.3L and an A reg 1.6 Ghia. I have fond memories of the 1.3 as I went all over the place in it with no breakdown cover, which would be unthinkable now! Although I did have the engine replaced at some point as it started spewing oil down through the air intake which would end up on the exhaust manifold and cause some nasty fumes to get into the car. The 1.6 was not reliable, it was always difficult to start and eventually it seized up, resulting in another engine transplant, I think the previous owner had neglected it. The bodywork was staring to dissolve when I got rid of it in 1994, I replaced it with a Montego.

Great to see an ordinary everyday Escort MkIII with all it`s quirks. I think 1980s electrics perhaps were only marginally better than 1970s LOL! Don`t worry about the glove box, my Metro doesn`t even have one. I think Fords often had quite smooth gear changes compared to a number of cars with notchy changes and even pudding stirrers LOL! Great to hear the story behind this car, thank you to Kev for putting the car forward for review. Happy classic motoring.

Great review Steph and I have to admit I was never a fan of the Mark 3 Escort apart from the cooking models, I was more of a mark 4 and 5 and 6 Escort enthusiast but I can relate to Kev's Uncle as my late grandfather had 2 mark 4 escorts that he used as a daily and was used as a work car as he was a plumber so it had the roof racks, tools, pipes, sinks in the back of the car, and who cared for seat covers my grandfather used a binbag on the seats during the week and if he went golfing off came the bin bag and clubs went straight in the back on top of the tools, instead of nails in the ashtray he had polo mints quartered for eating! This one certainly does. We did not get this generation of Escort here. I believe our first was the next generation after this. That car is a credit to all of her caretakers. When you are fortunate enough to have an old and/or high mileage car you become caretaker and custodial more than owner. I certainly feel that way about my 1990 Volvo 240DL Estate. Ma bought him new, and 32 years later I am blessed to have both in my life. Arthur will always be a part of my life.

I learned to drive on my Dad's Canadian version of the Escort Mk. 3, and I'm always struck by how much nicer is the interior on the European versions. The engines and (I think) some body panels were shared, but apart from that, there wasn't much in common between them. And they had a terrible habit of cracking the cylinder heads and sometimes dropping a valve seat. Ours did it twice in the 13 years we owned it. But it's great to see this one still out and about!

I like it. i love the clock on the dash. It seems like the Escort we should have had in the USA. Our 1981-1990 Escorts had a resemblance to the UK's Mark III and Mark 4 but were more bloated looking. In the UK, I guess they were considered a small family car while in the USA, they were sold as commuter cars or as an cheap new car for a person that did not have a lot of money but did not want a used car. many households bought one to use as a second car/ car for their teen. It is interesting to see that this car has a 1.3l. That was the engine that was to be in the base model US Escort but Ford found it too underpowered for the car. This means that engine must have been down right miserable if Ford USA passed on it in favor of the 1.6l Which was no highway speed champ). I wonder if Ford Europe looked to what Ford USA was doing with their Escort and decided on a 5 door model? In the USA the Escort got a 5 door hatch model as an early 1982, which was the right thing to do as 2 door cars were starting to begin their slow march to oblivion (with the exception of the sports cars). I like that Mark III Escort with its dings and wear and tear on it. It is basically showing that this was a car that somebody drove as a daily driver and not some trailer/garage queen that gets taken to car shows. A car is meant for driving. You cannot fault young folks in the USA that think that back in the 1980's and early 1990's everybody that owned a Fox Body Ford Mustang had one with a 5.0l V8 in it because that is all they see on the road or at car shows when in reality, most 1979-1993 Fox Body Mustangs had 2.3l 4 cylinder engines in them as both cost and insurance prices limited most Mustang customers to the I4 engine instead of the big V8. But you never see 4 cyl Fox Body Mustangs out there anymore. A lot were junked and still others donors for V8 projects.

Now thats a proper survivor car and needs to be used, warts and all, as long as it passes the MOT just keep it going, but when the time comes its ripe for a gentle, considerate restoration rather than a full on job, obviously the nails stay!

I do love this car and the story behind it. The car has to be left as is and Im glad it is. I had one local to me where I lived which looked ok until it was customised and ruined
