Please Note: today’s video was shot prior to COVID-19 lockdown and all videos shown in the next few months were filmed prior to the UK advising we isolate. Steph and all those involved with IDRIVEACLASSIC wholeheartedly support the initiative for us to isolate and self-isolate where needed and would urge all viewers to follow the government guidelines issued by governing bodies in their country - wherever that might be! Let’s be sensible and follow the rules now so that we can get as many of us safely through to the other side and get back to doing what we do best: enjoying classic cars and the associated adventures! #withme - and all that jazz.
In today’s video we head back to 2019 and we are looking round the BL Autumn Rally held in Milton Keynes, England. The hotly anticipated annual show organised by Tom Morley, is a brilliant opportunity to witness and celebrate cars from the rich history of British Leyland and Austin Rover - with a few British Motor Corporation cars too! The show is unique in that it gives visitors the chance to see the cars they remember from yesteryear such as the Austin Maxi, Austin Allegro, Rover 100, Rover 114, Austin Metro, Morris Marina, Morris Ital, Rover 800, Rover 600, Rover 200 and Rover 400. The show also features the cars you’d almost forgotten like the Austin Montego and Austin Maestro and rare cars such as the Austin Princess (Princess car) are welcome too.
This is one of my favourite shows of the year and whilst it may not happen this year, I thought I’d give you a taste of what we can expect for the next event - whether it’s 2020 or 2021.
The video features elements including:
British car show, British car rally, rare car show, British Leyland, Austin Rover, Austin Metro, Austin Mini Metro, Rover 100, Rover Metro, Rover 200, Rover 400, Rover 600, Rover 800, Austin Montego, MG Montego, Rover Montego, Austin Maestro, Rover Maestro, Austin Maxi, Austin Allegro, Morris Marina, Morris Ital, Hydragas suspension, Hydrolastic suspension, Leyland Marina, Austin Princess, Leyland Princess, Morris Minor, Sir Alec Issigonis, Harris Mann, Alex Moulton, English car show, BL Autumn Rally, British Leyland Autumn Rally, Princess car, British Motor Corporation

Great presentation as always Steph, nice to see 2 very early 1969 Maxis , including MCE 7G, the famous London -Mexico Rally car , which was prepared by Marshalls of Cambridge.A friend bought this car in the early 70s and recall travelling to a Stock-Car race in it.It also sported a built-in suspension pump as well as many other Rally upgrades !.

I used a montego estate for my trip to London from Liverpool. It was the most comfortable vehicle I have driven, gave great mpg and in traffic jams around the M25 I used to sit and read a book when we were stationary. I looked on the montego as a peaceful environment to be and I still like the shape!

Very enjoyable video, thank you for taking the time to provide it. I'm a 1963 vintage so passed my test in 1980. These British cars were pretty well the only choice, but that does not mean they were all no good. I had a great Allegro that never let me down once, and a positive experience with not one, but two Marina's. My dad had an MG Maestro, and boy, was it quick....thanks again, keep up the top quality work.

A cousin of my mum's bought a Maestro in Beige with a brown interior brand new in 1984 ! He kept it until 1990 ! Noel drove everywhere at 40mph !! And he had a toothbrush that he used to clean the nooks and crannies ! He was your Maestro man alright ! He traded it in for a Renault 19 in 1990 - the dealer said it was the cleanest car he had ever seen! I often wondered what happened to the car ! Loved the video and 26mins passed very quickly !!!

Finally finally managed to watch it entirely. As a BL fan just as you, it is nice to see a bunch of those cars in roadworthy condition and even better than that. Here in Belgium it is hard to find Maxi’s, Marina’s and Princesses etc. However, quite a significant number was assembled in Belgium in Seneffe that I visited two years ago. I would absolutely love a Marina coupe. The more I look for them on the internet, the more I move their sporty, racy appearance. Love the slope of the roofline! It is long but has a perfect ratio to the overall aspect of the car to me. Triumph Toledo two door, TR7, more even the 3/4/5, and Dolomite are on my never ending wishlist! Greetings from quite sunny Belgium!

Just seen one of Mr Hubnut's old cars - at 17:02 the light blue Rover 45 X569XDY which he owned back in 2018 and had some great times with - nice to see whoever he sold it to is loving it and taking it to shows. I have owned 3 different Rover 400's and 45's, some bad experiences with them too I might add - all engine and gearbox related - but I did love driving the 45, one of my favorite cars and such an easy car to drive too. Also owned a 1985 beige Metro 1.0 City X in my distant past (back in 1994) so had my own fair share of Austin Rover pleasures. Sadly the Rover love affair ended in 2011 when my 2003 Rover 45 1.8iXS Stepspeed Auto put a rod through the block, and its been Toyotas for me ever since. Great car show though - loved seeing the cars!

This is a show I'd enjoy visiting, the Maestro being a personal favourite. I quite like functional car designs and there were no shortage of those in BL days, though sometimes at the cost of the exterior design not always looking very sleek, modern or attractive, especially by comparison with some of Vauxhall, Rootes Group and Ford offerings of the time. But the Metro, Maestro/Montego, 1100/1300s, and the Marina always struck me as having pretty nice body designs. And their little MG sports cars of the time were really quite beautiful. I never liked the rears of the Maxi or the Princess much, and the Landcrab shape always seemed very strange indeed (tho' the Oz version is a very impressive design), and certainly not particularly pretty whatever Issigonis might have thought, and not that hard to see why it didn't sell, however brilliant the engineering.

At the 22 minute mark she said that it was available with a 1.0 engine (as well as the 1.3, 1.6 & 2.0), which I don't think is right...unless it was an export model. Did British Leyland help or inspire the Japanese Motor Industry in the 70s? Datsuns and Suzuki looks so similarly to BL cars. I seen Honda engineering was use in some of their cars. I had a 1.3 super Marina Coupe, then a 1700HL Marina Mk2 (? curvy dashboard), bit later on had a booted Rover 216SE and then after that a 2300S (Manual) SD1 which was only 2 years old when I got it. i remember the Sterling 825 and 827 in the U.S. That Honda/ Acura engine made certification much easier. Sales started in the Spring of 1987 but the plug was pulled following the 1991 model. The issue was that it was competing against a very similar model from Honda/ Acura. The Japanese cars did not have the British panache of the Sterling, which was very Jaguar XJ in their approach, but the build quality was miles ahead. By the time BL solved the issues the following year, the bad reputation was already in the thoughts of the consumer, backed by the reviews of popular automotive publications. It was competing with the very similar Acura (Honda) Legend which undercut Sterling's price. No rosewood accents, no rich leather seats, on the Acura, but the build quality almost torpedoed the Sterling before it could blossom. Sadly, I know of no everyday British models available in the U.S. any longer.

These shows never seem to have any of BL's successful cars like the triumph spitfire, tr range, vitesse, MGB, gt6 and MG midgets. BL even carried on with the rover p5 and later designed the Rover p6, they made the triumph 2000/2500 and the mini, the dolomite sprint was actually faster than the BMW 2002. It's a shame really, people remember BL for the cars that were shit and seem to forget about the good cars, they produced. Even the marina wasn't bad, it was boreing and basic compared to its foreign competitors, something that would also plague the mastero and montego, but it was far from a bad car. BL wasnt a bad company, it made poor decisions when it came to funding at times and the striking workforce was a bit of an issue, but they made some great cars. At one point it was the 3rd biggest car company in europe.

I agree with you with regard to keeping up with maintenance of a car. However well built a car may be, it doesn't do any good if you neglect the car and let it deteriorate to the point where it's no longer driveable. I've driven many cars since the mid 1990s, most of them Toyotas.

I know what you mean, right?! The first car I bought was a 1980s Toyota MR2. It was a 2 seater car. It had 185k miles on the clock. That, in itself didn't bother me. It looked like it had seen better days. While it drove fine for how many miles it had, its body was another story altogether. It looked like it been shot with a bb gun. Its taillamps had holes in them. And when it rained, its windscreen leaked like you wouldn't believe! If I had the money then that I do now, I might've been able to have some of the problems fixed. But I was just out of high school, and had recently gotten my driver's license.

I think the British automotive industry lost a great deal when the BL brands were allowed to decline and eventually sold off to foreign companies. Some great cars at the show and they are testimonials to how good the cars could actually be.

The Maetsro was great . Montego...meh....unless you got the 7 seat diesel estate. There was a time when those and the Renault Savannah 7 seat diesel were the two main family car contenders.......then Renault moved the game on with the Scenic.

The thing about the Maxi was and still is, that it looks so ungainly. Cars weren't and aren't cheap, so I guess many new car buyers back in the '70s wanted something more pleasing to look at with their hard-earned cash, even it it was less practical.
