I drove a 1985 205 diesel in 1996. The roof lining was gone, passenger side window winder was broken, steering rack had dangerous play and it was so much marking its territory that I had to top up oil and then check diesel level. Not only the XUD engine was very frugal, it was one of the toughest in a small car, I got it fired up at -15 degrees.

I’ve got the convertible version (in pieces!) in my garage! There were 450 hard tops and 150 cabrios in RHD, so still pretty rare, and not many of them left now (especially the cabrio).

I remember sitting in one of these as a kid, brand new and on display in our local Peugeot dealership showroom around 1989! I loved the colour combinations even then and the new car smell. My parents bought a used 309, although years later I had a 205 GTX which I loved!

I had a 205 GTi and a 1.4 - The 1.4 broke down at the side of the road on my way to pick up another car about 15 years ago, some random nice chap drove me the rest of the way so I just gave him the 205 as thanks, as I was pretty much just getting scrap value as a trade in. He obviously got it running, as it was still on the road up until three years ago! Still have a big soft spot for them, but finding a decent one these days is not easy. Also astoundingly easy to break in to, as I found out when I locked myself out and managed to quickly get in with no tools!

I still have a 1985 spanish-built GT, with the old 1442cc Simca engine and bonnet bulge to fit the taller engine. 96.000km on the clock. It is so much fun to drive! Even if it is a bit nose-heavy, because the Simca engine is heavier that the TUs.

I had a ‘93 205 Si in Australia- 1.6 4 speed auto with AC - great car to drive with power steer and soaked up our brittle road surfaces with aplomb despite rear torsion beam - build quality wasn’t great as flimsy plastics and lots of rattles and performance on 91RON unleaded not great yet despite b pillar stress cracks these cars were the closest thing to an Alfasud for the ‘90s 👍

My Auntie had a 205 as her first car in the mid nineties when she learned to drive at the age of 46. It was a 1.0 XE. The most basic model they did. It didn’t even have head rests! But that little car took us from Portsmouth to Newcastle a few times and she would commute to London in it constantly. It was a bullet proof and very comfortable little car.

I've got a 1.4 205 as pretty much a daily driver. It's the third 205 I've owned since 2005. I've been driving for 45 years and have owned and driven dozens of cars. I can't think of anything I'd rather have for my purposes. There's still a fair number on the road where I live. They don't rust and, as you say, they're pretty easy to get spares for; not that I've ever needed many. Thanks for the video Stef.

We haven't gotten Peugeots here in several decades, so I didn't learn about the 205 until later (found some old CAR magazine in my closet from the last owner and I think LJK Setright was waxing poetic about it). I thought that it was a handsome car, especially from the 80's, a time I didn't much like styling wise. That example looks stunning; I wish I could drive it! I also remember seeing a green Peugeot 306 three door while doing some fieldwork in Italy; I remember thinking that it was a subtly attractive car, and after a month I lamented that I couldn't get one back home in America. Peugeot has styled some gorgeous cars through the years, such that I wish Setright was still around to write about them.

Yeah, 205s are awesome! I have an ‘94 1.1 myself. it’s 7 years older than I am, but still makes sense as a daily soon-to-be classic. It just ticks all the boxes: looks, costs, luggage space, and comfort. And even with 60 hp, it is still a joy to bomb down a winding road!

Great review Steph, thoroughly enjoyed it. I worked with a Peugeot dealership for 15 years from 1987 onwards and the 205 was an extremely popular car. I never owned one (I preferred the larger Peugeot’s) but my dad owned 3 diesel ones. The TU series engine was introduced to the 205 in late 1987 (the AX was the first car it was fitted to, in 1986) in time for the ‘88 model year, replacing the old laid back ‘suitcase’ Douvrin engines which had been carried over from the 104. At the same time the new dashboard was introduced and we could tell without even looking under the bonnet (if it was a Petrol car) what series of engine it would be. The 205 was on sale in the UK until 1996, a remarkable 12/13 years, unthinkable today. I really would love one now, we had some great times working with these back then.

I owned 2 of them, one with Simca engine and the other with TU and they were both reliable and economical. The seats are great and the steering and handling are on another level. The only thing close on steering would have been the Metro and the Rover Mini. This Roland Garros was like a baby executive car inside. So glad that you liked it Steph. I would have another tomorrow without hesitation. Great video and you drove it the way it was meant to be driven, fast. Excellent.

Hi Steph. I have been waiting sooo long for you to drive a 205. I used to work for peugeot in the 90's and had one as a demo. FYI the card on the chain going into the dashboard is a factory add on immobiliser. That was an absolutely fantastic presented video. They were so driveable and you could chuck them them around. The 1.4 was the pick of the bunch. Quick enough to get out of trouble and have some fun without the need for a licence loser the GTI.

Great memories of the 205. My Mum owned one at the time I passed my test in 1992. So it was the first car I drove on a regular basis. My first solo drive was in a 205 so it holds a special place for me! I remember it being a lovely little car. So easy to drive but with character. And I've always loved the styling, especially the rear. It's on my list of cars I'd love to own together with the Allegro, Citroen CX, Opel Monza and Saab 900. Maybe one day 😂

Smashing little car, a credit to the owner. These cars were built when Peugeot made their own shock absorbers rather than bought in ones, and they got them spot on. The 205 was pretty rust resistant too; in all my years as a mechanic/MOT tester I don't remember any serious rot. The mechanics are strong, but won't tolerate too much neglect. Try one with worn gear linkages, it's like hunt the gear! Thanks for another cracking video. Makes me feel old, as I can remember these cars when new!

I drove a 1985 Mini Brilliant little car only once getting on the motorway I was always looking for that fifth gear. The one vehicle that always gave a chuckle was driving those diesel powered Bedford Trucks that drove occasionally as part of my job they could be temperamental on cold mornings and not exactly the fastest vehicles. I'm a big fan of small cars, I don't really like big trucks and SUV's that are popular here in the USA where I live now.

It's funny how we all see things differently when it comes to 205's. We had them as company cars in the mid 80' and had nothing but trouble with them, especially engine issues. My 1.6 gti ( managers car) had three replacement engines in the 2 years i had it and I hated it. One of my colleagues had rust issues with his on the wings, on a 1 year old car!! We eventually replaced them with VW cars and I we had no problems.

Very interesting video, Stef. We didn't get the 205 here in Canada. I don't believe it met our collision standards. The only first hand experience In have with a Peugeot was a 504 I looked at when shopping for a new car for Ma in the autumn of 81. The example in the showroom was showing rust, and it had a whopping 10 kilometers on the clock. Loved the car, but we gave it a pass and bought a Volvo 240 DL instead. Would certainly love to take one of these little cars out, assuming my 6'3" frame could fit comfortably.

"Feel a speeding ticket coming on." That should be a little thank you for the person who loaned you the car for each review. I thought that when I saw the speed camera in the last review I watched.

I must have had about ten 205s back in the day, one after another, all diesels except a 1.9GTi, a CTi and a Roland Garros cabriolet. They were as cheap as chips and I drove them all into the ground until they went for scrap. Shame really, looking back; they were great little cars.

The only 205 for sale here in Au today is a 1994 205 GTi Classic Manual with 112,000 miles. They want £20,000 for it.. 🥺 It's #9 of 30 apparently.

I saw that too. Could have picked them up for 10 grand in the early 2000s. And all the 306 GTI6s seem to have been quietly stashed away somewhere... soon to appear for 30K+ plus no doubt.

For context. I was a a child at the time this launched…I remember the first few years they were made. I was just old enough to get the impression this was a “new’ model….and was ahead of things like the Ford fiesta….even the re-modelled mk2. More refined, more modern…..and more expensive….although it was a small European car, it was somewhat aspirational for a while. I knew the higher prices of the 1.4 would make it unaffordable for a while.

The colour reminds me of the Oak Green as used on Mk2 Golf Gti’s.
