In the United States we got the T-car platform as 3 and 5 doors that were sold by Chevrolet and Pontiac as the Chevette and T-1000. They were the cheapest and most basic model sold by each division. They sold by the hundreds of thousands, especially the Chevette, for years. I was given a 1985 5dr Chevette with A/C with a 4spd as a graduation gift from my grandparents after I completed high school. I drove it through college and veterinary school and cross country to my first real job. It turned 100,000 miles crossing Moab desert in 112° heat with the air conditioning blasting. It survived almost 10 years and 150k miles of delayed or ignored maintenance and being driven like it was stolen. It never failed to start or left me stranded. It was driven cross country several times cruising at 80 to 85 miles an hour with the little 1.6 L screaming. Over the years I've owned much nicer and much more luxurious cars but I always have a special place in my heart for my indestructible dependable little Chevette.

Not seen one in many years….and that one was very rare…automatic. What always struck me is that this car isn’t much older than the original Astra, yet it looks like its way older. Hatchback versions were more popular. It’s old design inc rear drive and saloon option was I believe why it was kept going along side the Astra…Vauxhall worried that some of its customers, maybe quite a lot….wouldn’t want those new modern front drive Astras….the success of the original Astra proved their concern wrong. The little 1256cc viva engine was also used in the mk1 similar styled cavalier as the economy option….complete with very long gear lever…..not reqd in the little chevette. Also while it’s an old viva engine, it’s more refined here because the chevette has a torque tube while the viva didn’t.

With his help, I used to service it myself and even managed to replace a diaphragm in the carburetter when it failed, causing it to backfire like a cannon! This one had the rostyle type wheel design and was slightly wider than the standard wheels. It looked very smart with one or two extra design features including bumper over riders and the rear panel in black. Velour cloth upholstery inside. Lovely car and I just loved them both even though the 1256cc engine wasn't exactly fast but very very economical. The handling of both was superb. Only one thing I didn't like about it was the rather spartan dash layout and the lack of a glovebox. Things had a tendency to fall off of the shallow tray. But only a minor issue. All in all it was a great reliable little car.

The T car was sold worldwide, developed primarily by Opel. South America had the Grummet , which looked very much like the UK chevette but was mainly fibreglass bodied and had a chassis. The Far east had the Daewoo maepsy and related cars. Australia had the Gemini and the Panel van used the chevanne fibreglass panels. New Zealand was quite unique in that it had multiple variants, Opel, Holden, Vauxhall and more After they stopped making the Opel Kadett C in 1979 the chevette was exported to Europe as demand for the T car was still significant. America also had their version of the Chevette and it had various engine types including Diesel, they even developed an electric one during the oil crisis in the 70's. The aptly named electrovette

Remember my old man had a Vauxhall Shove-It when I was a kid - and an Opel Kadett. So rare now because they rotted before your eyes. Still, more reliable than a 1979 Renault 5 that conked out on a holiday to Wales. The thermostat on the fan broke so the engine overheated and warped the block. Happy days.

Great memories Steph. I had an R reg estate version which had been a TV rentals rep/engineer's vehicle. When caught in a certain light the lettering could still be seen on the tailgate. It served we well but very basic and no carpets in mine. I remember the headlight switch starting smoking on the way to work and luckily I was near the Vauxhall dealer and able to buy another.

I had a 1978 yellow one of these about 20 years ago. I absolutely loved it! The saloon always looked the best to me! I would still have it today if some idiot hadn't smashed into the back of me! I still miss it to this day!

My Mum owned an X registration version of the Chevette (1980/81 year I believe), didn't go anywhere fast but we went on plenty of family trips in it over the years including to Derbyshire and I remember it wasn't a fan of steep hills.

I had an ES Saloon as my first car in 1989 and I still remember the registration plate. The glass on the headlights would fall off consistently. Despite that it was my first car where I learnt all my basic car maintenance skills from. I bought another in the late nineties as a mobile skip when I refurbished my first house, it was a simple car for simpler times.

Sold as a Holden Gemini here in Australia. We got different engine and gearbox. I had one, new, in 1977.

I remember a time when there was a Vauxhall Chevette, along with the 'Chevanne', on every street and now I'm scratching my head trying to remember the last time I saw one! Nice to see a booted version too. Top video, thanks 😀

Some slight resemblance to the Chevy Chevette, but distinctly different. Both shared the T platform.

Greetings from sweden, where we didn't really have Vauxhall Chevette but instead the Opel Kadett, but I always liked the front better of the Vauxhall. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your testing of this Vauxhall Chevette! This was very informative for a car we didn't have in sell here.

A great video, Steph. In Australia, we had the Holden Gemini, based on the Isuzu T-car. The body was basically the same as your Chevette but with a very different front end treatment. However, we didn’t have the hatch version. Our Geminis had different engines, too; we had 1600 cc OHCs, coupled to four- and five-speed boxes.

When I was in my early teens. I saw one of these in a two tone for sale. It was in our local garage I loved the look of it then and still would love to own one. It was two tone brown lower half and a light colour beige at top. With brown check interior.

Another smashing video, Steph! The sedans were the best looking T-cars in my opinion. Chevette and Pontiac T1000 hatchbacks were everywhere in the late '70s and '80s, and several of my friends had one as their first or second car. The US only got Japanese-built T sedans as the Buick Opel by Isuzu for a few years in the late '70s. Buick dealers hated them and sold very few. In the early '80s, Isuzu sold the T-platform as the I-Mark for a couple of years, but had even less success than Buick.

Passed my driving test in a RHD Opel Kadett. No idea why the instructor bought the Opel version over the Vauxhall one but it was very different to his previous car - a Morris Oxford VI.

The Kadett had a more progressive clutch than the Chevette, which surprised me the first time I drove one.
