IEEE Photonics Focus Session: Photonic Computing

The overwhelming success of non-traditional computing approaches (e.g. deep learning) has brought with it a need for new bespoke hardware-accelerators capable of meeting stringent performance requirements. Photonics offers a promising route towards high-bandwidth low-energy computation due to its high speed transmission and ease of manipulation with a mature integrated technology platform.
In this session, supported by the Emerging Technologies Task Force, attendees explored the emerging field of photonic computing and discussed with experts the opportunities and challenges on the road ahead.

It’s in the video. They have an optical crossbar array made of photorefractive material, which uses charge separation as the weight/memory.
