I had my IELTS speaking test today, and as many fear, it is indeed possible for a question to arise to which you may not relate very much. Here's where social skills come into play, as I just spoke about a simple story that happened to me (which also helps in the natural speech part) and added some flavour to it (for added complexity, just do not overdo it). The examiner does not care if what you say is true, as long as it is coherent, natural and complicated enough (perhaps my mistake is that I was too friendly, specially at the end). Remember, even if it needs to be natural, you still need to take this test seriously, (but don't get nervous.)

Use subtitles in movies improve your IELTS skills with these three strategies: 1. Beginner: Watch video with subtitles and repeat what the characters say every 5-10 seconds. Take breaks every five minutes. 2. Intermediate: Watch video without subtitles and pause every 5-10 seconds to write down what you heard. Then, check to see if what you heard and the subtitle match. 3. Advanced: Watch video with subtitles and paraphrase what the characters say every 5-10 seconds. Aim to paraphrase at least 50% of dialogues. AcademicEnglishHelp Hello, I wanted ask you a question: a person who is not native speaker and that at 26 years old still has an intermediate level of English, it can in the future to have a level of English just like this girl? both as pronunciation both like everything else????
@Aehelp9 жыл бұрын
Hi Frat, Thanks for your question! Unfortunately, for most speakers this is simply not possible. A native English accent is almost impossible to obtain, especially without living in an English speaking country for years and studying English every day. Even extremely learned people, such as professors, carry their accent even after living in an English country for 20+ years. HOWEVER! The good news is that this DOES NOT MATTER! With a commitment to improve, you can become a very strong English speaker. Native level? No. Extremely proficient? Absolutely! In order to reach this point, you need to practice English all the time, and ideally live in an English country. You also need to work on common pronunciation errors in your native language (for example, Mandarin speakers have trouble with articles). And if you want help with English and #IELTS, make sure you visit www.aehelp.com today!

I started to watch this video with high expectations about how easy IELTS questions, specifically Speaking section, would be, unlike what people usually say about this monster called IELTS exam! Yet, things end-up with frustrations and imagining how badly I would do if similar questions were addressed to me! Man, I'm not even able to answer such questions in my own mother tongue! So, one can imagine how I would perform using a second language with a poor vocabulary bank to use with these topics! Seems I need more than two months to prepare for my FIRST ielts exam to get a high band!

Her performance is way better than 9. Non-native speakers of English wouldn't need to be as good as her to get a 9. I'd say even most of native speakers can't give her kind of answers
@Aehelp10 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your comment. Her performance is indeed quite strong; however, there is no score over 9 :) Technically, a band score of 9 means and expert English user, not only in general but also in specific topics. Even native speakers don't always get the full mark. Yes, it is true that non-native speakers also score 9; however, they are not graded "easier" than a native speaker. *remember accents don't matter unless they impair coherence.

I’ve practiced with these questions just now, and I’d say I nailed it. I have so much to say about the community so I was very passionate in answering the part 3. I have to work on a little bit with my emotions though because I get too emotional answering these questions. I agree that it could be hard if you’re likely to be indifferent in your community but one good trick is to get your answers from what you already know. These are general questions about a community so you could talk about your country, which is technically a community, in general.
@Aehelp5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, you must be careful not to be too involved with the questions otherwise you can go off-topic. The opposite is also true, you must be careful not to be indifferent about topics - rather, be interested, but not overly excited.

I have very mixed feelings about this part of the exam. My English is very good, I live in England for years now and I spoke English already when I came here. I need to take this test now because of changing my job to one that requires it. I have no problem understanding the video, I could translate it word to word in two minutes but I couldn't speak about these topics. I'm not interested in politics, leaderships and what not, I would have trouble speaking about this topic in my own language, it has nothing to do with it being in English. What then? What can I do if I get a topic I can't really talk about just because I don't know anything about it?
@Aehelp8 жыл бұрын
Just pretend you like it and talk. It's really that simple. Don't attache sentiment - You need to pass the test, so do what's necessary. You can visualize the topic and just make it up. More at www.aehelp.com.

Hi Fakeland, you are absolutely right! The best way to be creative on the fly is to practice this at home. It is very important that you keep your imagination in training up until the exam. @ohyeahh17995 жыл бұрын
Hey man is doesn't matter what do you use, either was or were after I. The main point about this is that we can't put were after a plural pronoun. For example: It is acceptable if we say ' I were' either ' I was' But we can't say 'We was'. We have to say ' We were'

I am genuinely surprised that her response garnered a 9 since I noted a dearth in academic words (a.k.a. deep terminologies such as "lugubrious" in place of the word sad). The maximum that my IELTS instructor gave me was a 7.5 when I had utilized at least 15 academic words during my Speaking simulation. I suppose the standards of IELTS examiners here in the Philippines are incredibly unparalleled versus those in English speaking territories like Canada or the UK. However, I found this video to be quite auspicious in terms of how my intonation and speed would be in the actual exam. Thank you!
@Aehelp10 жыл бұрын
Hi Anna, Thanks for your comments and questions. Please remember that it is not mainly vocabulary which affects the IELTS score but rather the completeness, accuracy and coherence of a response. In addition, the speaking section of IELTS is the same for General and Academic, neither the test nor the markers should have any discrepancy when evaluating based on these two parameters. Last but not least, the IELTS is an internationally standardized test, which means that the marking scheme is also standardized and there should be no divergence from it in any country. Keep up the good study.

Nope, many native speakers do not score over 8 on the IELTS (band 9 is an expert user of English - not just fluent and accurate)

some people say that the IELTS exam is kinda inconsistent, which means that you may get different scores at different times, with different examiners, especially in the speaking and writing section. Please give me your opinion of whether this is true or not? Thanks!

I just really hope I don't get any topic on community . I think most pupil in developing countries are not familiar with it at all since it is not present at all in our societies. I really had a hard time answering these questions...

I am sure you must have some form of community spirit. Just take what you know and adapt it to the questions. This is where visualization and critical thinking become key to success. Learn these skills on our site at: www.aehelp.com/

In this video, when the examiner asked Jade about international travel in Canada, would it be appropriate to talk about international travel to her country ?
@Aehelp7 жыл бұрын
I suppose it may be interpreted this way. In this case, it would be okay. Good question.

Don't be disappointed. Although many of us do it, it's actually not a good idea to compare our English to others. English is spoken by almost 2 billion people worldwide with different accents, dialects and backgrounds. So, don't be disappointed, just keep practicing and do your best!

Why are there so many mistakes in the subtitles? I'd expect better quality from the makers of such a video.
@Aehelp7 жыл бұрын
Hard coded subs are a very tedious and meticulous process, it is easy to make mistakes. However, we do strive to improve on this with each release. Thanks for your feedback.

I'll be having my first ever IELTS examination soon here in the Philippines. I don't have any idea yet on speaking test so this video is really helpful. My question is, what if I receive a topic that I don't care too much about? I know I can't make the interviewer change it for me (who the hell am I to ask even) but still can I request? I don't want to create stuff I won't be natural if I do.
@citkat57439 жыл бұрын
+Ramiro Enriquez You can be imaginative. Make up something and be able to naturally talk about it without taking too much time to think. You'll have to develop it then, don't say you can't. It doesn't have to be stressful. Topics are obviously not always relatable so it doesn't matter if your response is not true. I'd personally use someone I saw on TV and said they lived a few blocks down the road from my house, maybe change the name to native, etc. to respond to that card. The examiner is marking you on your speaking skills.

+Cit Kat Excellent advice Cit Kat. I agree with each point. Using stories from films and making them into 'real' situations is an excellent way find quick and effective responses.

INITIALLY SHE SAID THAT SHE IS FROM WESTERN MOST PART BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA AND THEN WHEN WAS ASKED ABOUT THE " WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR PLACES TO VISIT FOR PEOPLE IN YOUR COUNTRY?" SHOULD"NT SHE WOULD SPEAK ABOUT CANADIAN PLACES RATHER THAN WHAT SHE MENTIONED? -please help! track time 6:32
@Aehelp9 жыл бұрын
+Pratik Desai Hi Pratik, This is a good question. The problem really lies in the question itself - "what are the most popular places to visit for people in your country?". This can be interpreted in two ways. First, it can be interpreted as "where in your country are the most popular places people visit?"; second, it can be interpreted as "where do people in your country often go?". While you have taken the first interpretation, the student in the video took the second. Because the question is rather ambiguous, either response is fine. Good question, through - it shows you are thinking critically about the material! For more IELTS help, please visit www.aehelp.com

Here is an complete IELTS speaking video with subtitles taken from our website: Full IELTS Speaking Section Interview with Native English Speaker Score High Ex3
