This is one of a series of videos where Native English Speakers do the IELTS speaking test.
You can see a Band 9 sample answer and see how natural spoken English can help you do better in the test.
Today, I examine Martin from Rock 'n' Roll English
How did he do?
Watch and find out!
You can learn more from Martin from his Podcasts and Website
rocknrollenglish.com
Some of the interesting language that Martin used is given below.
For a full analysis of his language and performance, pop over to
ieltsspeakingsuccess.com/ielt...
PART 1 Introduction
Let’s talk about your hometown?
What kind of place is it?
What’s the most interesting part of your town/village?
It’s 30 minutes outside London - Nice synonym here for ‘from’.
Another thing though…. - A nice and natural way to say ‘also’…
Part 1 Topic Sport
Do you like sport?
Do you often watch sport on TV?
What is the most popular sport in your country?
I do like sport, a lot, especially football - It is common to miss out the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a question, but to add ‘do’ before the verb to show emphasis
I used to watch it too much, if anything. - "‘If anything’ here is a natural way to emphasise what you said may not be true and in fact the opposite maybe true.
"
Again, it’s definitely football. - ‘Again’ can be used at the start of a sentence, when you want to repeat an idea.
Part 1 Topic - Mobile apps
What mobile apps do you use?
Would you like to develop an app yourself?
What kinds of apps do you expect we will have in the future?
I am not so clued up on how to use Twitter - To be clued up on = to know a lot about something
So I can keep up to date with all the football news - To keep up to date with = to know the latest news
I like to watch KZbin videos when I am having breakfast, and stuff like this. - ‘stuff like this’ is quite informal but good for IELTS speaking, and means ‘similar things’
I don’t think I am capable of doing it - Advanced way of saying ‘I don’t think I can do it’
One day, you never know, it’s possible... - Natural way of saying ‘perhaps’ or ‘maybe’.
Virtual Intelligence, kind of thing, is quite big these days - "Kind of thing = something like that / big = popular
Part 2 Topic - CUE CARD
Describe a singer or music group that you like.
You should say:
- Who they are
- Where and when you heard them sing for the first time
- What types of song they sing
and explain why you like their music
I have this kind of affiliation with them - Affiliation = connection, bonding
She helped me to really start from the beginning, step by step - One step at a time
Every day flicking through the newspaper - To flick through (book, magazine, newspaper) = to read by turning the pages quickly
Real anthems of my childhood Anthem = a song with special meaning for certain people
Everyone knows the words to those songs - Notice we can say know the words ‘of’ or ‘to’ a song.
The 2 brothers had a bit of a row. - A bit of a row (rhymes with ‘cow’) = a small argument
The band split up in 2009 - To split up = to separate (usually used for a couple, but also for a music group)
Knowing 2 brothers don’t speak to each other, isn’t the best - "A common way in England of saying something, is to say the opposite is true, eg
Instead of saying ‘It’s good’ we say ‘ It’s not bad’.
Instead of saying ‘it’s bad’ we say ‘it isn’t good’ or ‘it isn’t the best’
"
Do one of those comeback concerts - A comeback concert = The first concert a band does after recently re-starting to play again.
I was supposed to actually see them…in 2009, - Be supposed to do something = intend to do something, but in the end you don’t.
That was nerve-racking! This part 2 made him nervous!

The examiner asked me the same question but in 2 different ways. I almost repeated the answers, but changed what I said a bit but clearly they were the same type of ideas. I got a band 7.5 :(

Haha, interesting response from an English teacher. Just curious whether Keith, as an ex-examiner, has come across any native speakers who do not attain Band 9 in their speaking. If so, what were their main problems and which part of their grades were hurt? I guess it would be grammar or vocab?

I have only tested a handful of native speakers and they all got 9, but I noticed they seemed to have prepared in advance - so they were developing answers and give me enough language to judge.

Today we're putting Martin on the spot - Put someone on the spot means, as per the dictionary, force someone into a position by asking a difficult question. Wonder if it has any other meaning. Also doing the test on the hot spot - what does it mean?
