It definitely makes me excited. I’m so glad you made this review, because I’ve been wanting to use this for some time now. It somewhat sounded like a dream, yet it felt overwhelming and I didn’t fully understand how to use it. But as a former CC family my brain just thinks IEW now. 😂 So it all makes so much sense to me.

Right!?!?! It was always overwhelming to me as well bc I couldn’t find a video that really explained it in a way I could grasp how it worked! So I’m glad this helped you and I can officially say, be patient in learning (if you use it). And just follow along with the DVDs and you will figure out soon enough how to use it. Just jump in!!! 🤪

I've been toying with this or just using literature guides (forget whose in particular I was looking at...) next year so thank you for discussing this! We've been just reading without really diving in too much, but my inner English teacher (I almost became one!) says we need to do more. PS- I love your hair lately. I love your hair no matter how you have it but the tousled look is just so dang cute on you 😊 idk if that's what you're going for but for what it's worth, I like it haha

Oh my goodness!! You’re making me blush!! ☺️ thank you!! Great idea!! Then YOU can choose the questions. Some of those little guides are more detailed than you really need, IMo. It depends on each kid, I guess!

I haven’t done anything with my hair lately except it’s grown out!! But when my hair dries after washing it, it dries differently everytime! This is just all natural. 😁 This is so much better than spending money literature guides now that I’ve gone through this course and better understand it. When we used the Proginy press literacy guides….they were just overkill. Soooo much work for a couple chapters.

Thank you so much for this review! I appreciate the details you shared and the suggestions on how to use this. I'm thinking about doing this in our co-op next year. It seems less overwhelming than separate literature guides and it seems flexible to accommodate kids' at different writing/reading abilities. Narration could be done by some families, while others could be assigned more in-depth analysis. Did you assign anything more in-depth to your son?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan

You are so welcome! I totally agree about being less overwhelming than some of the LIt guides!! Totally!! I didn’t assign anything extra for him bc this wasn’t his main LA this year. It was just a part. So I thought just learning and following along in the course was all I wanted. Like I mentioned, we did so the Paul Revere exercise by ourselves before coming back to together. (We also did a little poetry as another part of our school….so we dabbled in so many things outside of this, this year)

I love literature guides but my kids don’t and we don’t use all the books in the high school curriculums and swap the books!!! This looks awesome especially as it can be used a a curriculum for literature so we can choose books!!! My 16 year old did a unit study on C.S Lewis and he read books he wouldn’t have chosen after hearing the information on the book!!! We couldn’t sit down for an hour at a time wiv my older kids!!!

An hour feels so long!!!! I’m with you on choosing the books! I’ve looked at so many LIT choices included in curriculum and there’s always books that I’d rather do!

I'm thinking this would be a good way to expand on a read-aloud with your kids, turning it into a book study. What do you think?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 5 ай бұрын
That is EXACTLY how I would use it!! Or if I was reading along with an older student and needed to discuss things with them. For example when my son did TGATB high school language arts, that curriculum said to discuss the book with Mom. So I did read with him. But that was an example for me….i did NOT know how to discuss with him. I didn’t know what questions to ask. And he certainly wasn’t a talker. So how do you discuss? Either of those kinds of situations, this would help with! (I should’ve given that example in my video!! Darn it!! I forgot about it til just now!)

You’re so welcome!!!! I’m so glad that I could speak with experience on it because like you, I couldn’t find a video that explained it enough for me. And so even when I got this curriculum, I felt SO NERVOUS that I was taking on too much! I was intimidated, but I jumped in and it wasn’t so bad. 😁 you can do it!!

Do you think it would be very difficult for a highschool student that has never used IEW to use this program? It sounds like maybe we should have mastered that specific writing program first?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 4 ай бұрын
No! Teaching the classics doesn’t have much to do with writing. You could incorporate writing in it if you wanted. But it’s more about recognizing the various literary elements!

Good review; thank you for sharing! I have completely immersed myself in this curriculum after joining the Pelican Society so I could purchase the Live Streaming, and I absolutely cannot wait to start it with my students this year. I’ll be starting my 18th year of homeschooling and have used IEW for many years. WHILE Teaching the Classics is NOT an IEW product (it’s a Center for Lit product), it does work well with Windows to the World. You might want to go back and edit every time you say the author’s name - Teaching the Classics is actually written by ADAM Andrews, not “Andrew Andrews” 😊! Happy Homeschooling!

First impression: COMPLETE overwhelm - LOL! I tried this with my kids in their upper elementary years, and I have to say, it was A LOT when it came to the teacher-intensive side of things. I think it would be fun if you have a natural knack for this. But for me personally, I'd rather use a good literature guide or curriculum bc I don't have the brain bandwidth for that on top of everything else we are doing for school.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan

I get this!!!! I was a bit overwhelmed at what this might be before I tried it. But now having been through it and how to use the appendices…. I think it’s a matter of just trying. But it would be difficult if you didn’t ALSO read the literature WITH your kids!! So yeah, if you want to assign them reading but can’t necessarily read along, then this wouldn’t be the way to go. I’d be overwhelmed too! 😀

The Center for Lit (who is the writer of this program) has Ready Readers and Reading Roadmaps which are like Socratic list cheat sheets for many books. It’s the stepping stone while you get use to the discussions.
