This has also happened to me about 3 times in my life. One person flicked a cigarette in my direction so I punched him and started a fight. Another time, four racist yobs jumped my friend so I jumped in and ended up with cut marks all over my body but managed to fight them off. Always makes me smile when I remember them times from my youth.

​ I think the point is it should not exclusively fight, simply standing up to yourself and your family, say the guy threw something, you could shout to them and proceeds to call the restaurant security (refer to person of experience/authority)
