Only about 20 mins in so far, but really enjoying the discussion so far. Men absolutely need to reclaim art, fashion and aesthetics as a whole. I think a lot of why these things have stagnated and deteriorated is the lack of straight men’s involvement in these kinds of things. The whole, “if you dress well you must be gay” stereotype has existed as long as I have been around at least. After a certain point, I just decided to not care and just dress well because it’s nice to dress well. I do agree 100% that a lot of guys deliberately dress sloppily in America because they think that they will be seen as gay for dressing well. It reminds me of guys saying they didn’t like reading because that was seen as effeminate or somehow weak/uncool as well. I’m going to steal the “sloppification of American men” phrase for future use. We absolutely are a slob culture. Almost all standards have been eroded. Even women these days dress sloppily (see the whole “athleisure” trend).

Just saw a Ronald Coleman 1929 film the other day, the clothes were so great. Tailored and just as full of style as the actresses costumes. Sartorial elegance yes! Bring it back men! It screams healthy self respect.

Some men are so afraid of looking decent or good in their dress that they even fear that to do so is something of vanity, so NOT “caring” is now a fake piety and “virtue.”

I'm in favour of ties AND high heels to disappear from the culture. Men and women can dress up nice AND confortable, it's not a oxymoron.
