It's a different game. No idea why it was called Sonic Blast in the US but all other regions named it G-Sonic (maybe for the Game Gear?) Likewise, 3D Blast is called Sonic 3D: Flickies Island in other regions. So aside from the pre-rendered sprites, I believe there's no deliberate connection.

you call it strange now but yet do you realize that classic sonics last ever games on Sega hardware had him running like that like sonic jam and how sonic adventure was originally supposed to be at Classics sonic game in fact, after like the release of sonic the fighters sonic ditched the whole compact running thingy so if anything this is just fixing classic and you know personally, I like it that way I don’t know there’s something so dumb about the way he runs in current game because It took away the much-needed edge he had which is actually why a lot of people dislike Santiago it’s not because he’s completely off model, but because the based off of the sonic one box art, despite the fact that classic Sonic’s design went too many altercations up to you, sonic and knuckles where he had longer limbs golden buckles and deep blue fur The original was light stubby didn’t have any buckles
