I know someone who works in the cybersecurity sector, and they get what they like to call 'cert warriors', people who basically collect certifications. The problem is that when they actually interview and vet these 'highly qualified' candidates the veil quickly falls and they can see that these people know little to nothing of value. They suspect most of these people are having someone else take these certifications for them, which is not a good look for the industry or those getting hired. If hiring managers start thinking anyone can get these certs, then getting certified isn't going to push an application up the stack.

@@joehardy7115 interesting to hear this, I also see these warriors in AI and other fields. Like I said at the end of this video, certifications are helpful to complement an existing stack or when you want to pivot to a related field. Not if there’s no foundation to attach them to.

Hence why on top of certs I do CTFs. Still, a big problem is few companies are willing to train candidates and HR is clueless about which skills and certifications they are looking for

@@waterbloom1213 This is actually a great recommendation. Do you notice a big difference with CTF listed on the resume? I think sometimes we forget to put accomplishments/experiences like this because our brains inadvertently think companies/HR only cares about certs.

@@joehardy7115 Not on the resume, but it will always be proof of hard skills once the filter itself is passed. I'm a politologist and business grad by education but my family are highly technical academics. It wasn't until I passed the HR filter and was allowed to showcase my CTFs and deployments that sysadmin staff gave me a chance.

school give you the tools and provide you with a roadmap , that is computer science . Cybersecurity is an Art and a mindest no amount of certification and schooling can you teach that .

I completely agree with this. I’d argue that computer science is an art as well as long as you allow yourself the freedom to explore more than a roadmap

If companies are neglecting cyber security, why aren't the unemployed engineers show them that they need security by you know... blackmailing their way in.

I am a College Student in my 5th semister. A full stack web developer with a moderate resume of projects, skills & experience. i am now switching to Cloud Engineeing specifically AWS but will learn azure and gcp in time also. Just a Beginner in Cloud. Do you think it was a good decision ? and should i apply for Aws Certs or just stick with Fundamentals like networking, virtualization & linux for 4-5 months and then do those certs. Thank You !

@@DecisionForest We honestly just are waiting on a culture shift. Just because you haven't seen any break-ins in a neighborhood doesn't mean you stop putting locks on the doors or cameras up around your valuables. I think companies just don't realize how much cyber-security is worth the investment. Hopefully we will get more compliance laws to help push us towards securing infrastructure, might push for more jobs and better security standards.
