Mary, when you helped the 2 angel tree sisters last year, I was so touched by how much time and thought you put into their gifts. I often thought about those girls and how excited I imagine they were. This year, when you first announced you were sponsoring 4 angels (FOUR!!!), I about burst into tears at your generosity and kindness. And now there's even a 5th bonus angel! Just incredible. Christmas is for the kids. And you just cannot stretch $100 very far anymore, you're doing the right thing.

You're right, $100 doesn't go far. It's a half decent coat, some half decent shoes, and a cheap-ish toy. I suppose that's "better than nothing," but that's not the kind of Christmas you want to give these kids. A Christmas that "beats nothing, I guess."

One really great Christmas is not going to "spoil" a child. As a child that grew up with sparse Christmases, I knew that one good holiday did not mean that next year would be the same. That's ridiculous and all the people who love to run their mouths when you're doing something so thoughtful should mind their own business and put their $$ where their mouth is. Thank you for being you.

Yes, exactly. I was an Angel Tree kid one year, and I knew how lucky I was, and I didn't expect it to happen again. I didn't get anything the next year, or the one after that, and I hadn't been spoiled. I knew who I lived with and what our situation was. Not all kids do, but I bet most of them do. One really good Christmas isn't going to make an entitled child 🙄

I grew up in a family that didn't have much and I never got many presents. When I did one Christmas, I didn't feel "spoiled" and I didn't expect the same again. I was grateful and I cherished what I had got. In fact, I'm 28 now and I still hang on to some of those gifts. They bring nice memories.

Mary, thank you for being such a kind and generous person to these kiddos. I live by the philosophy that you can't save the world. If you focus on the need that still exists, you will drive yourself crazy. I try to give generously but have to limit my focus to my sphere of influence or I would just be left feeling defeated looking at how much more there is to be done. We have to have hope that there are other kind and generous people who will come along and join us. I am reminded of the starfish story by Loren Eisley: "An old man was doing his daily walk along the beach one morning, it was a beautiful day to be by the sea. The man was enjoying his alone time, enjoying nature and reflecting. Then he spotted a young boy crouched by the ocean, picking something up from the sand and throwing it into the sea. It was not a busy day at the beach at all. In-fact, the man noticed it was just him and the boy. Fascinated by the boy’s actions, the man stopped to watch the boy for a while. He noticed the boy kept scooping something up, running to the ocean and throwing it in. The man watched the boy repeat these actions again and again - stop, pick up, throw, move. Over and over. The man was indeed intrigued by the strange actions of the boy at the beach. “What could he possibly be doing?” The man asked himself. And so he walked closer to the boy and asked him. “What are you doing there boy? “I am saving these stranded starfish” answered the boy. “If they stay on the beach any longer, they will dry up and die. I am putting them back into the ocean so they can live.” Then he picked one more starfish and threw it in, then another, and another. The old man was silent for a while, watching the boy labor away. He didn’t understand the young lad’s enthusiasm and drive; it just didn’t make sense to him at all. Because life had taught him that if he was to spend time doing anything at all, it was better to spend it aiming for the stars, doing big things that made a difference with a bang. “Young man” he said, “on this stretch of beach alone, there must be more than one hundred stranded starfish. Around the next corner, there must be at least one thousand more. This goes on for miles and miles and miles - I’ve done this walk every day for 10 years, and it’s always the same. There must be millions of stranded starfish! I hate to say it, but you’ll never make a difference.” In response, and without missing a beat, the boy picked up a starfish and threw it into the water, saying, “well I just made a difference to that one.” Then he picked another and threw it, “and that one.” And so one after another, the boy picked and threw starfish into the lifesaving waters, each time repeating himself to the man, “it made a difference to that one, and that one, and now this one…” And on and on the boy went, making a difference one starfish at a time."

Because of your generosity and big heart, 5 kids are going to have a wonderful blessed Christmas. The smile on their faces is priceless. Seems like Ebay's just not worth the stress. 🙁 Honestly, Mary, you're doing the work of a 15-20 person church group just by buying for five kids. The sports teams at the school where I work adopt angels every year, and they can only get two. My girls' XC team has 11 girls, and they collected a hair over $300 this year. We're shopping for two with around $320, and I'm kind of nervous we won't get to get them enough. I'm in awe of you, really. You're one damn person!

About 8 years ago my husband and I adopted a family with 3 little ones, under 10. I remember my hubby was as excited just shopping as a child is opening the gifts would be on Christmas morning. We live in a small town; one Walmart, one Macdonald's - small. Anyway, after Christmas we had to exchange a couple things we ourselves received as gifts. A lady a couple folks in line was returning a ton of stuff; we recognized her returns because we bought many of them for her children, couple of the kids were with her. Man, that broke our hearts, not for us but for the kids. I left the tags on IN CASE something didn't fit, wrong color, etc. I still adopt a family with kids each year, not nearly as much as back then simply because I'm a retired widow now, still, a kid's joy on Christmas - every kid deserves that. Every parent isn't like that lady from all those years ago. Guess I'm trying to say, you do what you feel in your heart, Mary. Gonna be 5 kids with big smiles on Christmas morning because if your giving heart. Sorry for the novel. God bless you, Mary.❤️🙏

This happens so often. One of my first years teaching HS, we noticed a kid needed new clothes. His were too tight and had holes. So a bunch of teachers got together and bought him new sneakers and a new wardrobe. He was so happy. After Christmas break he came in, with his old stuff on. Someone checked to make sure his new stuff was the right size. His parents returned everything that didn’t fit themselves. We were crushed. He ended up with almost nothing of what we gave him. It hasn’t stopped us from trying again when we see another kid in need. Most of the time thing work out the way we hope it does. Don’t give up.

I don’t understand why people care so much what you do. It brings a joy to so many people including you Mary. You light up when you talk about it. I will never understand these people. Also, as someone who has several friends who grew up very poor and only had gifts as children that came from charities/churches or the angel tree, I can tell you that they still talk about it today and many of them are in their 40s and 50s and even 60s. What does it matter if they are spoiled? This is a memory that will stick with them forever. And if you can do that for anybody, anywhere, anyhow, then do it. People need to get them over themselves. Bless you Mary! ❤️🎁

I can’t believe sellers haven’t bombarded eBay with emails and calls and whatever they can to kick up a fuss. Those policies are absolutely ridiculous. People aren’t going to want to sell. - Also, spoiling those 5 kids is the entire point! Anyone saying you should worry about spoiling a kid who’s poor enough to need their name on a tree that relies on random strangers to give them anything for Christmas, is missing the entire point. 🙄

@Terry L. Cooper if ya set up the system in a way that makes it easy for people to scam sellers for free stuff, they’re obviously going to do that. I can’t believe there aren’t safeguards in place for that. It sounds like there were and eBay took them away, which is even more ridiculous.

Some people have no sense of moral decency anymore. To ask for/demand a refund from a small seller who has clearly stated prior that they're not able to accept refunds is just gross. I feel bad enough if I send a question to a seller for more details on an item, but then decide against it. I think people have been spoilt by big corporate consumerism where you can be lazy and entitled and get your cheap goods with free shipping/free return etc etc

I think it’s so bizarre. That people criticize people for not helping others… then when people do help others… people still find a way to criticize. Whoever told you to help more kids.. should go out & do that themselves. They shouldn’t be telling you or anyone how to spend their money. You have a family of your own. & went out of your way to make 5 children feel extremely happy & appreciated this Christmas. You are more generous than most. & I think putting more money into less kids In many ways is actually more impactful. They are getting nice stuff. Not cheap stuff because the budget was spread so thin. It is not on you to help every single kid who is less fortunate. You did a great thing. & it’s a shame someone so ungrateful had the audacity to make you question your own good doing.

Hi Mary, I have watched your other channel faithfully since before Covid lockdowns. I would be in a store and the sound and action of the person stocking would make me sleepy. I wondered what is up with this? So I searched "stocking store shelves" one day and found you! I live in Texas now but grew up in WV, so your whole upbringing and culture resonates with me. Your channel has brought me through some very tough times. I definitely agree with you next year on choosing a teenager or two from the group. For some reason, people tend to shy away from choosing them. I went through the adoption process of two teenage boys in the foster care system and saw them the first year at the foster care Christmas party getting their gifts. Thank you for all that you do and thanks for keeping it real!
