Samplers represent varied types of workflows. Each one is unique and encourages different parts of your creative mind to open up. Some are limited which can be fun to a real artist. Others which are luxurious like Akai, EMU, Pioneer, Roland and Korg, etc. are the "normal kids" of sampling...LOL. Most studios will have these samplers - they are popular and are utilitarian. The "weird kids" of sampling are the boutique models like the Octatrack, OP-1/OP-Z, granular Eurorack samplers like the Morphogene, Nebulae, Beads, Instruo Arbhar, etc. These inspire different types of production which stimulate deep exploration and experimentation of sound design outside of regular chopping, looping and layering. Samplers are like shoes...some are sneakers, boots, crocs, Sperrys and shower slippers. They can all do many of the same things, but the pipeline and process will vary. Some stay at home in the studio, some travel with you and some are like old, dusty, obsolete relationships that you keep trying to reboot and like again, but you are simply unable to make your brain and consciousness fit back into that old box.

Nice Video…The Akai MPC Live 2 would be my only sampler if I had to choose at the moment. Based on its sized, mobility, and features within the Akai Software. The fact that you have multiple Akai samplers from different time periods the beats created from them can all be loaded into the MPC X,MPC Live, and Akai software. That’s a major bonus when for creating from the legacy and the new. Having choices when it comes to samplers can also be a good thing. Some musicians have multiple guitars or whatever their primary instrument maybe. In my experience the samplers are tools in the tool box. It’s easier to sample from those legacy machines that have the textures to capture a particular vintage sound you have in you head with less tweaks. ✌🏾

I narrowed down my collection from the mpc3000, mpc60, 2000xl, and 1000 to just the Live and the korg es1 which is just too fun and easy to let go. For what I have, it would have to be an mpc live, 2 or one. They all have the same work flow and abilities so I'm good with either. Unfortunately they don't have a dark sound to them like an asr-10, sp1200 or older joints but there's enough within them too bit reduce, add effects and filter. Resampling comes in hand once you use all of those options. Then there's the sequencer that's always been king imo. Using them as a midi hub is dope as well. Just wanted to say some other things about them that don't seem to get mentioned.but yeah my only grip would be that sound wise nothing comes out of them with a grimey sound unless you sample a grimey sound in them or fool around with what's in the mpc until it sounds grimey

If your 2kxl is lacking In Low end you might wanna look into having it recapped. Id describe it as mid range punchy for sure but over the years I’ve done so many a/b comparisons and I would not say that it loses low end off the source material. I have noticed a difference between a good quality unit and a unit that had been really beat up. As for maschine, do not go into it expecting a mpc workflow. I LOVE the maschine workflow but they are definitely a different workflow. If you go into it trying to force it to be an mpc you will end up pulling hair, it’s just it’s own thing.

If you work on computers all day and feel uninspired to sit in front of one after work go with Hardware. 2. If you get distracted on a computer with email websites etc, go Hardware as its focused on one job only. 3. If you feel overwhelmed by to many options go with Hardware. There's literally no point in getting the MPC Studio 2 IMHO, because in terms of PC/Mac MPC 'daw' software, it isn't better than the Maschine 2.x software. @@PHeMoX ... I would say that the MPC software DAW doesn't look as pretty as the Maschine software DAW, but it is just as capable as the Maschine software... and before the release of the Maschine+ standalone it was more capable due to integration with the X/Live/One standalone units. I think it's a smarter move to get the MPC Studio 2 to see if you like the MPC ecosystem rather than testing the waters with one of the standalone units... yes. Pretty much my feelings as well. So much that I still have my original Live as a now back up to my Live2retro. However I will say that yes the S2400 is addictive. Yes it does have 8 polyphony but it’s different than my Digitakt. Things like you kick and snare share a voice. You pair the sounds that will or should never overlap. Chopping on it is different than the Live because you can’t lazy chop. But if you get like an 8 beat loop and go into slice mode it will autochop evenly across the 8 pads nondestructively. Oh and yes I will be getting that 404mkii as it seems everything that frustrated me about the SX has now been address for the most part.

Digitakt is better than Rytm when it comes to sample functionality. For one it has more start and end point resolution. But also more sample playback options (don't know if you need that). It's also possible to play it 4 voice polyphonically with a certain midi adapter to send the Midi channels back to itself to play 4 tracks at the same time. Of course resampling is your friend here to spare audio tracks. And it's even simpler/faster to use than Rytm as well.

Good stuf man. Yeah i think I own 1 of every sampler. Its crazy. I think most of my studio are samplers because I feel these things really are an instrument that can make any sound. And the different effects on each of them, along with their flaws, make them all worthwhile keeping. However. Nothing beats your daw. Even though im going dawless. I think its imortant to remember, the artist makes the gear, not the other way around. I use mpc and 404 for sound sources, octatrack as a sequencer, digitakt for mono drums and bass. And op1 for portability and ideas. I may end up trading some of my gear for a live. I agree, mpc is king at samplers. And id likely prefer an older mpc, over a new sampler. Its just got everything you need. Also its nice to see your choppin samples from vinyl. Great video 👍🏻

I _really_ do not agree starting with software is the best choice for someone completely new. It's much better to grab something like an SP-404mk2 or even an older standalone sampler, because the limitations will really help you figure out making beats. I strongly disagree using 'an ipad app' or a random DAW with a gazillion features is easier for a beginner. To be honest, depending on the budget, the MPC One is probably the best choice out there, as it does allow for several approaches to making beats or music as a whole, including using the MPC as a midi controller for a software DAW. The other thing that could have an influence on which sampler to go with has definitely to do with what genre of music you're making. A lot of trance / techno or electronic music is just easier made using step sequencers. This might make the Roland MC-707 more interesting than the MPC One. Last but not least, the Roland MV8800 has the absolute best user interface of all time. The MPC One/Live/X is not remotely close when it comes to that, even when admittedly those newer samplers can do more than the MV. The MPC software is also very lacking in terms of the scrolling cursor on the screen doing what it should do or the whole mess that is zooming in on the piano roll screen. It's stupid quirks like that which have been solved decades ago on different gear. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of new stuff that's great on the recent MPC line, like adding FX to single pads, entire programs, entire tracks or main outputs. But at the end of the day there are a million things to improve on the MPC user interface for something like the MPC One.

@@mpchead Pioneers mistake is that they marketed it as a DJ tool. Its fully capable as a standalone machine for producing. Its popular in the House scene. Check out DJ Sneak.. he’s been doing some production videos with it. I myself sold my mpc 2000xl to use the DjS-1000 instead just because of the great workflow.

I started on my mpc60 in 94-95. Upgraded to a 3000, and went from that to logic to eventually Maschine as my main go to. Personally, I can’t go back to my mpc60 because of the very slow workflow and loading times (I still have it, and yes, it’s has ‘that sound’). How do you optimize with yours? And also, to me, there is nothing faster to chop with than maschine. I also think the software/hardware combo works better compared to the MPC line. Almost everything is one button away, and very logically and fluid. It takes some time getting used to the pattern/scene/song workflow, but it is very flexible. Once you find your workflow it’s a turbocharged way of making beats.

I've started selling gear too. Sticking with maschine and now s2400. Sp 404 mkii will be here soon and might let go of the s2400. Choose the one which is the fastest for your work flow. Most will not be able to tell the sound difference.

@@mpchead I don't hate it. I would like to be able to truncate. I would like hi pass filter (maybe I haven't learned but it could be there) I do like on my MPC and maschine having at least comp, verb, delay. I am still getting used to pitch/time change on samples. I do like that it's almost simple like the old machines. I do like the sound!

@@slowflowlowlow Man please stop and go read the manual. Not only does it have a high pass and low pass but its also got a band pass. In MIXER MODE (not level, pitch envelope, or loop/slice) hit SHIFT + the "B" button of the sample whose filter you want to change. It's right at the top. To truncate: In loop slice mode, hit the pad of the sample you want to edit, hit the "B" button over the fader, zone in on the area you want to isolate, HIT SAVE. You can either overwrite the existing same or rename it to create a new sample. The S2400 can do a lot of stuff but you have to study the manual until you get familiar with it.

Limitations wise...The Mirage was 8 bit with 8 seconds. Woo!!! It's only equal was a Yamaha Vss-30 (similar to the Casio sk-1) it was non midi at only 2.5 seconds I had worked wonders with these Samplers chopping and looping real time. Whereas folks like that alias ring...I avoided it...even with low bit rate Samplers. 45 speed was no issue but@ 78 rpm the samples were full of alias. But the Ensoniq Mirage with midi capabilities gave me the ability to mask alias noise. So I would run with the Mirage or push to shove...my MPC 2000 classic.

Agree. I was shocked how easy it is to chop. And then the end of the slice can be shortened to remove anything undesirable. But so many other choppers the end point is locked to the start point of the next slice. Maschine rules.

Quite excited waiting for the 404 mk2 to get into a world of some effects alongside Sir MPC. Back in 99 with my first computer, it really turned me off at the time regards music. I kinda got into it recently because of the technology and such easy logistics regards storage n stuff. also its like cheaper these days, especially cheaper polyphony. mpc is just so advanced and this 404 seems even more natural for creativity.

Isla S2400 has 16 note polyphony now, that unit is a total masterpiece. I love the old MPC 2000 (non XL). It's very punchy and limited but that's the beauty of it. I don't really like the newer units sound quality (MPC live/X) there is something about those transistors and capacitors and old technology that makes the old units sound huge. How you feel about the 60, that sound is what makes a big difference to me. When it's time to track, your doing less editing because the punch is already there and you don't have to add it at the post.

I love Maschine pads, I think they are the best. However, I moved to MPC Live because my computer was crashing before a set so went with standalone setup. Replaced pads with MPC Stuff fat pads and it was much better, but Maschine still had the best pads. One thing that I did notice that the Live did better was being able to trigger up to 4 sounds on 1 pad. On Maschine you can link them, but it will take up 4 pad slots. I didn't like the Live sequencer though. I like the SP1200 for sound of course and cause the workflow is simple, but it takes time to do things right. Without a screen you use your ears for everything and I think that makes for a better producer in the end, but my quantity output is really low on the SP vs the computer or Live. Hard to pick just one. I wanna check out a 404mk2! Love your beats!
