Hmzzz, I hope AudioPilz has experience in running from angry lynch mobs, but of course, it could be worse. He could also grab a 3K and designate that bad gear 😂. But samplers of all kinds have convoluted workflows, especially if they wanna be an "eierlegendewolmilchsau" as the new generation of MPCs so desperately wants to be. Personally, I don't bother with them too much. If it's a DIAB, my box is a 12 Gb laptop soon to be replaced by 64 Gb machine. Run the software, add a silver Studio controller, and go F them all. Still convoluted but with more options to fiddle with (in my case, including the Cremona Quartet). And as an ICT drop-out, I've spent enough time behind a screen not to be bothered by them at all. Unless they are touchscreens, then I hate them with a passion.

Also more or less true of using an ancient DAW on an ancient OS. A DOS box with Cakewalk, an Atari with KCS Omega, an OS 9 Mac with Studio Vision Pro. Software can finally be be reliable once it's "dead" and you never update it again, and you are free to bask in that sweet workflow. Obsolete systems can be productive as they have loads of abandonware and none of the distraction.

If you're going to do a bunch of work in the box, I recommend a touchscreen stylus. Makes life a lot easier. The "MPC Software" DAW also offers fantastic integration with hardware MPCs, you can use the on board controls pretty much seamlessly to work on the same project files on a large screen with mouse and keyboard, with some other added benefits like full VST support and more audio tracks. I have the Live 2 and I love it. It has replaced practically all of my other gear.

I'm in the same boat. I thought the extra features would improve my workflow, but I discovered that I don't need them as often as I thought I would, and that navigating around them when I don't need them just slows things down too much for me. Good overview. Things that are cool that weren't mentioned: the lack of IO can be addressed with an external mixer or interface off the USB Port. For live performances, I plug it into my X-18, and can use all the 18 channels as ins or outs over USB. Haven't touched the built in audio IO in years. Thing that I don't like about the unit: all the things you would need for live performances are spread across all different menus/ pads! Track mutes, sample mutes, sequence changes, ect, all have to be their own seperate section. So if you want to mute something to go into a new sequence, you've got to jump between a bunch of different menus in a very short amount of titime.

I should just put a DAW in here... but your last line really cinched it. For all its faults... when I sit down at my rig... I'm making music, or I'm tweaking the rig. That's it. I'll spend hours sitting there tweaking, configuring, rewiring, and jamming and jamming and jamming. Sometimes just spending an hour tweaking some crazy wall of noise ambient reverb feedback insanity where I have several synths along with MPCs softsynths all playing through a crazy reverb plugin on an NTS-1 which is acting as an effect pedal through send/return and also feeding back into itself through the MPC's ultra flexible routing. I guess what I'm saying is... if there was a computer there, I'd probably be spending all that time just clicking on webpages, watching youtube videos, etc. But I don't. So... yeah. I was so sure that this current MPC family was going to be perfect for me as an FLStudio user that I bought the vastly overpriced MPC-X. Huge mistake. The touchscreen sequencing is just horrible. Can you imagine having to use you fingers to pinch and move and navigate your way round Ableton Live, instead of a mouse? Well thats what you have to do here, on top of the endless amount of screens for every mode. It feels like you are just swamped with screens. That said, the MPC One is great value for money. You really get a lot in the box. Having all those effects as part of a hardware setup can be invaluable if you can't afford to buy a load of pedals and want something thats better sounding and more versatile than a Zoom MS50/CDR70. The lack of inputs/outputs with the One are pretty limiting though. I still say this box is primarily aimed at hip hop junkies tbh and I'm sure most of them will prefer the versions before this touch screen nonsense took over. If having batteries is important to you then look at the MPC Live, or if you fancy an internal speaker then go for the Live 2. I felt a bit ripped off going for the MPC-X, considering its the exact same software and RAM in them all, but if you already love these new MPCs then the extra In's/Out's and encoders will probably help you out. I loved being able to clock all my gear from it. The size of the thing was huge though, it took up so much space on my desk that getting rid of it was an easy choice in the end

The built in synths seem like a desperation value add so some people who should probably stick with a DAW anyway see enough in it to be fooled. I question Akai taking a long beloved platform for sampling and downplaying sampling with it. I had an MPC Renaissance at one point but decided to sell it because I didn't get along with the MPC software workflow besides the sampling functions. Sequencing was a pain compared to FL Studio, and the MPC plugin wouldn't play well in it.

Funnily enough, most of the hate comes from people who've never even tried it. Complaints about the newer MPCs being a "DAW in A Box", are also absolutely hilarious. If the workflow was anything less, the complaints would be "if only it worked more like a DAW". You get a standalone device to move away from using a computer. While yes, there is a learning curve (because OMG it actually takes time to learn something new!), it's still a pretty straight-forward experience. And it still hits harder than any DAW does, WITHOUT plugins.

the autosampler is pretty cool. i mostly use mine for master clock, one shot skinny puppy style samples from movies/tv shows, and i also sampled fellow BAD GEAR DFAM with it and have made various percussive kits from the samples. Lots of fun with the x/y effects pad.

Not a roast at all but the ability to connect USB audio and MIDI interfaces addresses the IO issues. I've got mine connected to a Presonus 24R which gives me access to all 32 ins and outs the MPC software supports.

I have a fetish for gold synths 😛 I owned a Gold MPC One but after quickly realizing that I would never like the work flow and operating system, I spent a few days debating if the gold was worth overlooking that issue. Nope.

The Akai Force does allow disk streaming and I think I saw a hack where someone got the Force firmware onto the MPC. I agree with your conclusion. The laptop is the fastest and best sounding music machine I own, but when I want to have fun away from the computer, the Force is my favorite groovebox I have ever owned.

I cant help feeling like its an even more limited copy of Maschine, but with way worse screen and stuck on 2010 hardware. Maschine Jam (with any other Maschine) would be worth tearing shreds out of - how something can simultaneously be so incredibly intuitive and fun and so near unusable at the same time is utterly beyond me, and the consumer relations of NI make IK look positively charitable.

A lot of people who run older mpcs or emu sp1200s would say no, but imo it's just as capable as the vintage samplers. Even more so in some ways, but you make a point about the MPC one in particular not being able to record phono which other versions including the MPC live 2 and x can.

Weekeenndddddd!! As usual, I enjoyed the video. Using USB and a USB hub, the MPC One is quite the studio center piece. I'm using mine with 6 synths/drummachines that provide Midi over USB. The old Emagic Unitor 8 midi interface is supported as well, which gives me another 8 Midi in/out on 5 pins connector. You can use one class compliant audio device to get upto 32 audio I/O.

@@AudioPilz Yip, was about to post the above. Ext. audio interface and USB hub adds a lot. Agree it's a mixed bag; clunky ui; steep learning curve; not enough storage; should stream audio; only 4 Q-links can be annoying, because UI is inconsistent with how they're setup; doesn't play nicely as a MIDI slave, should be called MPC Dom. But there's more I like than dislike. For all it's annoyances, it's still a bargain, because it's very good for a number of uses: drum pads, performance, hardware stereo sampler with many voices, (unlike Digitakt, which I ditched for it!) nifty auto-sampler, hardware sequencer with good feel; plugins like OP-X are good; master clock and usb host for whole studio; cv/gate interface for small eurorack; supports class compliant audio audio interface. Useful as digital mixer. The mistake Akai make is pitching it like it's great for everything and paying no attention to UI/UX quality. When, it's only good at some of those things (sampler, sequencer, hub, sketchpad), and not so good at others (file management, recording, detailed arrangement, full plugin-track host, final fx/mixing, mastering).
