I AM OLD SCHOOL. SO FOR ME IF I HAD TO PICK TODAY WHAT WOULD I CHOOSE. I AM ASKED THIS QUESTION FROM THE FOLLWERS QUITE OFTEN. SO IN THIS VIDEO I WILL ANSWER THAT QUESTION. THIS WILL TIE IN WITH THE CAMP COOKING SERIES. THE US.ARMY CANTEEN ISA GREAT WELL TESTED AND PROVEN BIT OF WOODSCRAFT / BUSHCRAFT KIT. AS A COOK SET AS WELL AS A WATER CARRY SET IT HAS BEEN PROVEN FOR MANY MANY YRS.IS THERE A BETTER CHOICE FOR THE CAMPER HIKER. THE PATHFINDER STAINLESS STEEL COOK SET IS A LARGER SET WITH MANY GOOD ADVANTAGES OVER THE OLD ARMY CANTEEN. THE WOODSTOVE THAT ATTACHES TO THE PATHFINDER AND THE HEAVY DUTY LID MAKE COOKING IN THE CAMP A FAST EASY CHOICE.

Hi, I enjoy your videos, but I do have to disagree on one point. As a former soldier, I’d deploy for training for 4-6 weeks at a time into the woods… we never had time or equipment to clean out the army plastic canteens, but they never were getting funky. Sure, if time and supply allowed, we would rinse them out with fresh water, but cleaning? That only happened after return to the rear, so after 4-6 weeks of daily use. Never did I have a funky canteen in that use scenario.

Just a tip, when drinking from a canteen or any water container, Do nt put your lips or mouth onit. hold the nozzle a bit above your mouth and pour the water in your mouth, This wikll eliminate Backwash from your lips and mouth. Keeps water cleaner. Love your videos , Never stop.

FYI: On canteens or you thermos for cleaning. Carry a few Polident tablets with you. use some luke warm water to fill it then drop a couple tablets in it and let sit overnight and rinse in the morning. It will clean even coffee stains and leaves a little bit of a minty flavor that actually helps the taste of the water in it.

I use American Vietnam era canteen and cover, post Vietnam era American and Australian canteens and covers. Along with these I have Auscam covers that feature a pocket for a old style hexamine stove. But in my 49 years of camping, I’ve never seen a canteen cup stove or lid. I wrap electrical tape around my flat handle cup handle. Greetings from Australia and thanks for all the useful information.

I find i like the old GI style plastic or metal and the flat handle cup. The flat handle cup has a slot in it so you can insert a bayonet tip in it and have an extended length handle ...also it will string onto the GI mess kit along with the GI utensils so you can dunk the hold kit and caboodle into a garbage can full of hot soapy water swish it around , move down to the next can full of clean water to rinse and you clean your whole set up with a couple of dunkings....very efficient when you got a line of busy GI's waiting to clean their dinner mess.

Bag of 40 micro magnets off Amazon, don't take up much room but have many uses. Drill a tiny hole though the centres when you get them. Uses I've pondered include, Tent mesh/door closures. Fishing weights. Tackle security/finding dropped hooks. Drop one into your waterbag to help pull any metals out before filtering/treating etc, I'm sure there are more uses others can think of 👍

I remember one time I went to the mess decks and had a bright idea to put grape juice into my canteen. We had these huge cartons of grape juice in there for some reason. My water had a faint taste of that juice for an entire deployment even when I rinsed it out with boiling water. I was afraid to use soap because I thought it would absorb that soap flavor too. Only use water in those lol. Maybe some drink mixes arent that strong and it doesnt happen but damn.

That’s a really good review of canteens. I’ve got an old Boy Scout style round canteen my wife got me. I recommend acquiring an extra molle canteen cover. Use two shoulder straps from a 2 qt canteen (or equivalent; I used LAPG straps) and attach to cover making a neck strap and chest strap. This makes a great snivel gear bag when you are hauling a pack. Not recommended for hunting because it rides where binos would normally rest. I carry trail mix, Copenhagen, small headlamp, and compass in mine.

Good information in that video. I use a Nalgene canteen and a stainless steel canteen cup with a cover similar to yours. In the outside pockets I carry a pot stand for the Trangia stove and a lighter. I am happywith this setup. The transparent canteen is also easier to keep clean as I can see the dirt. At home I use stainless steel balls for cleaning. That works very well and does not damage the canteen.

Good comparison. Thank you. Great point about the evaporative cooling of fleecy the canvas cover. I've been thinking of getting one of the Boundless Voyage titanium canteen cup sets. It has 2 cups - a short and a tall that nest, and a lid that fits both, so some good cooking options. You can get a set with a titanium canteen, but I was thinking of the nalgene one. No stove in the kit though, so a folding stick stove could be a good option for a lighter weight set.

Good point- Canteens can get funky. So, often I'll wash out juice bottles (etc) and use those as canteens. They're clear so I can see any sediment or nastiness inside. Many have wide mouths. They're free. And when they get funky, I throw them in the trash. Many bottled water containers are thin (near paper thin) so those are not good to re-purpose as canteens. Fruit juice bottles are usually very rugged. Gaiter aid bottles are also tough, and many others.

Pathfinder sells lids for G.I. cups and for six bucks expands the G.I. system considerably. The problem with dirty canteens is from food, drinking while eating and bleach Iodine will not clean grease and food sludge. The same carrier for your Nigene canteen you showed will fit Pathfinder kit, at least mine does anyway, and thus makes the bigger kit less bulky. Thanks for the video.

I had that plastic canteen for the whole 10 years I was in. you never wanted to have to drink with the chemical mask straw.... they were NASTY, I wish that Kleen Kanteen had existed when I was in, having 40 oz of water, in something I could set in a fire would have been a game changer. some times when we would spend several weeks out in places with no resupply, we would have to try to clean out plastic canteens in the field, and it really sucked. all that being said, the ARMY sets are really well designed for what they were, and what they knew back then.

Katadyn has cleaning tablets for water bottles but It takes a few hours to work and you want to rinse that multiple times afterwards. I could see that used overnight for a dirty water bottle. If it's your clean bottle, you'll need to filter a lot of water just to rinse that out properly.

The 1910 canteen, cup and pouch was far superior to the crock of shit which British Army personnel were using from the end of the 50s until the mid 90s. It consisted of a 1 litre nylon bottle in green originally but later, when I served, in black, which in itself is a good piece of kit, having a wide mouth and lid, and later a straw system adapter used to connect to a drinking straw fitted into a respirator (gasmask). However the large cup with butterfly handles was also made of nylon so couldn't be used to boil water, furthermore it sat on top of the bottle rather than under it, so first the cup had to be removed before you could access the bottle. To make things worse the pouch for it was made of very tight fitting canvas which shrunk when wet, which happened a lot in the training areas of Wales and Northern England, as well as in North Germany, Northern Ireland, and the Falklands, so whilst it was a struggle to take out, putting them back in afterwards was a real pain in the ass and took a minute or more and caused you to break into a sweat even in shitty weather. Oddly this 58 pattern canteen & cup's predecessor, the 44 pattern equipment, was more like the US 1910 equipment, consisting of a metal canteen nesting inside a metal cup. Later on Special Forces units opted for this instead of the 58 pattern as it was better, but it wasn't available for issue to other units, although we'd have preferred it. Thankfully I don't have to use this anymore for leisure activities and instead opted for what is basically a copy of the US 1910 canteen and cup - the Dutch Army version i.e. a plastic bottle in a stainless steel mug with butterfly handles, which fits not too tightly inside a Dutch Army pouch made from waterproof cordura, and there's space inside for a Pathfinder lid which fits the cup, and a folding pocket wood burning stove. P.S.: we never had issues with funky canteens because with each 24 hour ration pack we were issued 6 or 8 water purification tablets, and quite often we used these as one canteen wouldn't be enough to get through 24 hours so we'd refill them in a stream and chuck a puritab in. These gave the water a chemical chlorine taste but generally we didn't taste it as we made tea with the water or mixed it with drink powder known as ''screech'' in the cup. But they also sterilised the canteen.

I wanted to come and comment to this video. Blackie, I have been enjoying your videos for quite awhile. I even say ,"Pruusk" instead of "Prusik" in your honor! Hahaha Anyway, it's difficult to come up with new, original content. You did that and more with this video. I learned much! Thank you. I bought a couple of Millbank bags from some dude in England and I will be using them with my Grayl much per your suggestions. I had no idea that Grayl would nest into that stanley pot like that. Keep up the good work and thanks for all that you do.

FYI: 99% of water filters will do the same job. The basic $20 Sawyer mini will do the same job as all the other filters under the $300usd ones. For the most part, every filter under the super expensive ones, will NOT remove metal or chemical soluble contamination. So paying anything over that $20usd at wally world is a waste of your money! Because you still require boiling that filtered water or you risk harming yourself. Seriously! There are plenty of videos that test these filters under microscope and prove the higher cost products are bullsh!t. Just a higher cost. If you want a pump, buy a inline hand pump for $15usd. At least then, you know what you are getting and everything is pocket size and easy to replace. Once again, after filtering your water, BOIL IT!

I use similar. But I also use British 58 pattern Osprey ones. Same same cooking cup..but they have a huge plastic drinking cup. I have a harness set I swap back n forth. British ones in winter mostly. I also have a harness with a bumb pack and 4 nalgene round bottles. Takes less room on the belt. I can get a gas stove a gas bottle underneath. The canvas covers we were issued in Australia are way better. It has kind of like thick moving blanket lining. If you freeze a bottle pug it in, summer 44°c all day 12 14 hr later, youll get 100ml out of it, the rest is ice. Clearly not good but it just demonstrates the insulations effectiveness. Our issue bottles are a bit different to. They can take hot water. Way thicker green plastic than US ones. I also use cheap very thin stainless bottles. 1lt weigh near nothing. Just in backpack they weigh nothing when you have used that first. TBH if I was starting, Id just buy nalgene plactic bottles a titanium cup and maxperdition type pouches cheap ones off ebay. There are numerous stove oprions gas, trangia and pit stands if you want to burn twigs. Military issue sure its tough, a few glory days memories, but tough is heavy;as is Pathfinder gear

I have one of those old World War II canteen cups and cover with the artificial for liner. I couldn’t find the original stainless steel canteen only the reproductions and the aluminum ones. I hate the little chain because I think it kind of gets in the way but some people like it because you can use the cap and the chain to pick it up out of the fire. You just have to make sure it doesn’t get close enough to the power to melt the cap. I also have one of the old plastic green canteen’s and the digicam cover with the pockets. It is very useful. I put the water, purification tablets and some other things in those little pockets. I have a back up system of a couple of Sawyer mini Water filters because they are very compact and light and easy to carry. I think, finding the right balance of good old, reliable, military surplus and modern more advanced technological equipment is a good balance. Everybody has their preference. It really comes down to the circumstances that you’re using your kit for. Do you need lighter or do you need harder wearing? Do you need a balance of both? I try to get a balance, because that way I can use it wherever and whenever.. A lot of people push all these new knives and bush crap, knives, etc. etc. but I still have my aircrew survival knife and I have a couple of folding knives. I have bought and a multi tool and another one I was issued in the service and also the pocket knife. My dad gave me many years ago. I think in threes. always have a primary and secondary and a back up. Good video Blackie. Where in the world are you at? That’s an awful lot of aircraft, traffic helicopters and planes. You must be near an airstrip.

I’ve been carrying the 24oz Grayl for a couple months now. But the first hike I used it on I underestimated its holding capacity do to its size and almost got myself in trouble on a 11 mile two day hike. I knew I had lake access at 5.5 mile, then 3 mile from their, then another 2.5 from there. Luckily it started raining that first night and was able to gather water off my tarp other wise I would have been screwed. The moral here is the Grayl is the best filter Ive ever used. I love that when you filter lake water it tastes like store bought bottled water and no fishy taste. But make sure you always bring a Nalgene or some kind of water storage container and not rely on just the Grayl. I know this whole scenario was dumb on my part but maybe someone can learn from my stupidity.

Lexan Nalgene bottles can withstand almost 300 degrees F. If the water is still in liquid form, it won't come close to damaging it.
