Do you think it is possible to become an actually hire worthy ux designer by self learning? If yes, then how? Cause I see people say that people who have done formal degrees in ux or hci are considered a lot more valuable when hiring, in comparison to ones from bootcamp, online courses or self taught are usually not considered as good. As someone that's trying to learn ux by myself, i find this very discouraging along with the fact that ux is already oversaturated so newly learned designers have a hard time getting hired. Any thoughts on these 2 issues? And what can i do about them? I feel like i am already at a big disadvantage cause I'm not taking a college course

I totally understand where you're coming from. My first design-related job was as a graphic designer, and I slowly transitioned into UI/UX design at the company, taking on responsibilities and showing interest in that direction while studying UX on the side. To be fair, the job market has been difficult recently, but keep in mind it's not just UX design that has been affected. If you're struggling to get that exact 'UX Designer' role, try to look beyond that temporarily and apply UX design in your practices. For example, I was coding websites at one point, but that meant I could put my UX hat on and apply what I had learned, even if it meant working more than I was paid to do, because that builds your portfolio. Probably the easiest way to get experience fast and increase your chances is to temporarily join an agency that is hiring for similar positions. You might have the chance to put some big names on your CV that way.

Photoshop and Illustrator are just tools. I’ve seen people with poor skills in these tools having senior UX design positions. I’d start looking into Figma and learning user-centered design process.

Starting with UX design offers a strong foundation in understanding user needs, which is crucial when you later get into UI design to create functional interfaces. In the design process, UX typically comes first, focusing on user research and problem-solving. Then UI follows, bringing this understanding visually. It’s helpful to begin with UX and simultaneously start short UI tutorials, perhaps in a design tool like Figma, to familiarize yourself with both aspects of design. Hope it helps!
