Before jumping into a daily design challenge. Let's be clear why you need to design. Figure out the problem and give a solution to that. UI/UX is not only about looks.

That's a good tip to create your designs with a particular product in mind. Most challenges I've seen have been a bit all over the place with what they ask you to do so you just end up with 30 random things at the end of it. Doing it your way breaks the daunting task of designing a product down into daily steps which seems like a really smart way to go about it.

Yeah. It's best to focus on one because you get to think your way around the product, and then get to do something with the screens. I'm designing the app for a restaurant and it's been really fun haha It's an industry I didn't get to work with before

I work as a frontend web developer, and part of my role involves creating interface designs at my job. Occasionally, I find myself delving into Figma to create prototypes. Surprisingly, this has sparked a love for UI design, especially typography. Currently, I'm immersed in a UI/UX course, and my enthusiasm for this field is only growing. Coding has always been a passion, but integrating it into my web designs elevates the experience. I'm seriously contemplating a career shift. Thanks!

That's so cool! Having the coding background is always a nice-to-have as a designer, and even if you decide to keep working with software development, learning more about UI design helps you collaborate your team, thus build better products. And I must say - design is such a captivating field ❣️

I think you have some amazing suggestions, but first I'd go through the UX path and learn the basics about User Experience and Human Behaviour. Without that no one will be a good UX/UI Designer. I believe one can learn tools along the way. As a UX/UI and Front-end developer, I'd say it's just like programming: you learn the basics of JavaScript, for example, and you can definitely then learn the frameworks and supersets along the way. But without knowing the basics of Front-end, you won't know how to properly code and solve problems. Same here. I like your ideas but I believe they fit more on a UI Visual Designer approach.
@debbittencourt
@debbittencourt 3 ай бұрын
I get your point, but the best approach will very from person to person. Talking from my experience and other designers I have managed and mentored, getting familiar with the tools and designing interfaces first boost confidence and help designers make decisions to improve the UX along the way - which is why I listed steps the way I did on this video. It's not that UI will be more important than UX. Both of them work hand in hand. I really appreciate you sharing what works best for you. New perspectives are always highly welcome.
@thisisnara92

@@debbittencourt hey, ofc, I also spoke from experience, as I’ve been working as a UX/UI designer and Frontend since 2013. But don’t take my comment personally, I appreciate your video, and of course varies from person to person specially in terms of goals. I don’t believe boosting confidence is always good, though, I believe in solid foundations first. Confidence comes along the way. I think you probably didn’t get what I said totally, as I am not criticizing the points you mentioned, only speaking about some you missed: you said it well, UX and UI work hand in hand - that’s why I think you missed the UX part, which should come sooner than later. I believe being a UX/UI Designer is not only mastering tools, and for that reason (as your video is about being a UX/UI designer) not having mentioned learning UX fundamentals is a limited view, in MY opinion. Also, even though we have experience, speak to other people, collaborate and even get to a senior level in our career we are always learning. I’m not trying to impose my view, just giving my own and one will choose what’s best.

@@thisisnara92 Yeah, that makes sense. I truly appreciate you sharing your POV based on your experience. It helps all of us learn and grow! Your feedback made me see I could've broken down UX vs UI and been more clear about this, but I decided to keep things simple and put them into the same bucket. Totally something I can pay more attention to in the next ones. Thank you for taking the time and helping me see that.

Hi, I'm fresh out of high school and want to get into the UX/UI design field. I'm not exactly sure how to get from point A to point B though. I've heard there are a lot of different ways to get the education and skillset needed but I'm not sure what would be the most helpful. Does it make more sense to get a college degree in a related field or spend that time learning the skills on my own through things like bootcamps and KZbin tutorials?

I have also been learning different programming languages, web development etc. So I am pretty confused about what should I prioritise more and get better at.

Hi! Not late at all. I'm a firm believer that, as long as you keep learning and put in the work to get better, you will stand out. The programming background is an excellent plus, as most job openings have that as a nice-to-have. One thing you can do is freelance offering both design and development services to see what you like to do best and also get real-world experience.

I will be making a video about this in the future, but here's an outline of a case study: - Context: the scope of the project, who the target user is, the team, and your role - Steps: how you went about going from idea to high-fidelity interfaces (it's common to use the design thinking framework, but you can bring your own twist) - Results: If the product was launched, you can bring some results concerning user adoption, retention and feedback

@debbittencourt
@debbittencourt 5 ай бұрын
First of all, congrats 🥳 I’m super happy for you! As a junior designer, your part is to help the team getting things done. Often, your tasks will be more generalist, so it can go from user research to the design of high-fidelity interfaces. BUT you probably won’t be doing all of this alone - Your managers should be there to guide you along the way. If you can, schedule a 1-1 with your manager to understand the project, what the goals are, and what they expect from you. A book recommendation is The First 90 Days - it’s great read before starting a new job. As for feeling rusty, follow the tip on the design challenge (even if for a shorter period). Nothing like practice to fire up your skills 🤩 Hope it helps. Wishing you the best in your new role ⚡️

Imo, most of them will only teach you the basics while charging thousands of dollars so I don't think it's the best place for you to put your money in. I find the UX Design course by Google (I added the link in the description) to be the best option to get started. It's way more affordable than regular boot camps and gives you a good knowledge foundation. The courses are split into weeks so it gives you a bit more structure, but you still have to show up and commit to it.

I have a question, do you create a case study from the replicated designs or you have to start an entire project and create a case study from it.
@debbittencourt
@debbittencourt 3 ай бұрын
I will do a case study per project, once I'm done with the project. That can be an entire product or a specific feature, depending on the complexity of it. In the case of the UI challenge, it's best if you do some research to know your target user before you get started. Once done with the interfaces, you will combine research + designs for the case study.

One certification I always recommend is the UX UI Design Course from Google - that you take it on Coursera. It covers a lot of the theoretical concepts you are looking for right now and they bring a glossary with terminologies in each module. If you are not able to get the certification, start with books: 1. Design of Everyday Things 2. Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making 3. Don't Make Me Think 4. Lean UX: Designing Great Products with Agile Teams The books often mention other authors and some terms - so, as you come across them, do a little research on what they mean to get acquainted.

Now, from seeing videos like this, I've been able to gather that I need to know these: UI, UX, Colour theory, Figma software, 3d vector generations. Now can you please reccomend what should be my strategy that lands me money earliest ykwim? Thanks again 🎉

Thumbnails may require less time to master, but web design will probably give you more $ in the long term, as you will be able to charge more per project. I suggest you take a couple of days to learn about thumbnails so you are able to offer your services while you master the skills for web design on the side. My tips for you are: - Thumbnail making: build a portfolio with some samples of what you can do, and share your work online. For this, X will be a good platform. You can find creators here on KZbin and then reach out to them via X. - Web design: Again, share your work on X as you learn and make progress.

AI is taking over coding and design, in a few years we are all without jobs :(
@icksv5529
@icksv5529 3 ай бұрын
01:08 and this is exactly what I don't recommend and neither others who started before. The major problem of UX Design, or if you wanna call it UX/UI, or if you wanna call it Product Design is that turned out into the Web Designer 2.0 version, just a different title. UX Design has scientific basis, by jumping directly into practice, you will only learn by osmosis, thus resulting in yes nice crafting abilities but poor knowledge, poor capabilities of applying human centered design and the fundamental wrong mindset. We have millions of designers "made" in this way, there's no need for more. Moreover, with the increase applications of AI in crafting digital interfaces, they will all either disappears or forced to retrain in actual UX Design, or grabbing the books they didn't read before. 01:20 and this is the other problem. UX Designers does not design things out of the blue, we do not guess. UX it's about discovery problems and devising a solution based on the gathered data by applying critical thinking. Web Design on the other hand, has never had the need to do this because fundamentally it started before UX was brought online through NNGroup mainly and Adaptive Path. Web Designers were working on the requirements coming from a client, like software engineers before the "product mindset". A grocery list of things the client wanted and the Web Designer was designing them, there wasn't research, there's wasn't any scientific contribution brought in by the knowledge of the Web Designer, which typically was trained as a graphic designer with an add of html, css and javascript and if you were wodering, I was a web designer in 2000-2001 before leaving and get back in 2015 as Product Designer and moving then towards UX. If you want to start in 2024 make to yourself and to the ecosystem a favor: A. Understand that "UI" is a fraction within UX B. If you remove UX from UI you get Web Design. C. UX does not design anything without data. All design challenges providing you with a prompt, without dummy content such as user journey, rainbow map, thematic analysis, customer feedback and so on, does not train you at all in UX, they are exercises for graphic design and web design D. Understand that user experience is a field always existed, that UX Design is supposed, or was supposed, to be the specialist of this field E. Understand that before this profession has had different titles, UX Design, UX Architect, UI Architect, Usability Specialist, Usability Analyst and more F. Every human is a system, every product is a system, every service is a system, every business is a system, every society is a system. They all interact each others, UX Design search for problems to solve in these interactions, thus it's not limited to the digital world G. Learn the basics of behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology and human computer interaction at least, add sociology and anthropology basics for the top. Once you have read this, you will be marveled by how complex we are and you will hopefully understand why we act in a certain way rather than in another. H. Accept that same brain schematics does not produce same cognitive processes, some people process information in a different way. Your reality, it's just your reality. I. Understand what are cognitive heuristics and why they exist, then train yourself to learn when they kick in and so learn to try to be unbiased as much as possible when you are conducting research, real research, meaning thematic analysis and coding, not the four quadrant empathy map. J. Understand that "design thinking" it's simply a cognitive process called creative thought and that every brain someone more someone less, works in that way. It's not a magic process and cannot be used for the whole cycle of a service or a product. K. Understand that UX is the merging of the scientific process brought in by the disciplines mentioned (eg scientific research method) and the "designerly" way brought in by architects, product/industrial designers that consisted of producing many prototypes in the attempt to find the best solution for a problem, it's not just this last part. L. Any course below 600 hours, it's a fantasy (and i was an intrusctor in a bootcamp) M. Follow the right people on linkedin, keeping in mind that the number of likes or the brand for which someone has worked, doesn't mean anything. N. Use critical thinking, be curious and learn to have the excitement to unveil all the intricate aspects of human nature that express through interactions with the surrounding

Hey, thank you for your insights and recommendations. I do understand your way of thinking and agree with most of it, but not the approach. I support the idea of simplifying steps in the beginning so people early on their journey can feel comfortable using tools and not feel so overwhelmed by lists with 10+ items as the one you wrote. Designers can (and often should) go over the steps you mentioned, but you need to remember that practice is one of the best ways to learn new concepts and to make good products. The concepts change, human behavior shifts and technology evolves, so active learning (work + study) is still the best way to go imo.

@@debbittencourt Simplyifing does not mean cut out knowledge and design a product or a service without understading how human beings process information, it's not UX. The list it's just a list of recommendation that you don't need to apply all together at the sametime, come on... Jumping into Figma by doing the type of design challenges showed in the video, it's not learning UX, indeed you are not learning UX, you are learning Web Design. To make that stuff usefull and thus an element of "practice is one of the best ways to learn" you must mandatory add the dummy content. UX does not design by guess, we use critical thinking and data, so that approach in that way, is wrong and teach the wrong mindset. **"you need to remember that practice is one of the best ways to learn new concepts"** Yeah, generally it's valid, but it’s important to understand its context and limitations. All the major online bootcamps rely on this and all of them do not have enough theory, in fact none of them teach elements of psychology for example, research is sloppy and the analysis of translated in "do an empathy map". At the same time they heavly rely on students to study at home on their own and almost all of them does not study at home and once they get a job, it's done. In IH I had a classroom of 15 and even if they were warned at the beginning that they had to study on their own, almost the 90% was not doing it, as well in CF. Practices allows you to apply theoretical knowledge, develop skills, and gain hands-on experience. However, practice alone, without a solid theoretical foundation, can lead to a superficial understanding of the subject matter. This is especially true in fields like UX design where understanding the underlying principles is a must. If someone says I know "UX" but it doesn't know what for example is a cognitive heuristic, how social behavior affect us, what are the typical codings using in qualitative analysis and that an A/B test is not concluded by simply assuming "oh cool, 300 clicks on B and 150 A, then B is the winner" then it most likely it doesn't know UX and always most likely because he/she has been fed up with the idea that this job could be learned simply by practing, and even in the wrong way by doing design challenges crafter for web design rather than UX. The focusing on learning by practice and in the wrong way (see the type of design challenge you are suggesting in the video) have brought a gap in education that led to a focus on the aesthetic aspects of design, while neglecting the importance of usability and user experience which you learn through the studies in the theory. As a result, we see job advertisements emphasizing proficiency in tools like Figma that for complex functions has a learning curve of 2 weeks and the ability to create visually appealing interfaces, over the capability of understanding people by knowing how human brain and behavior works and the capability of critical thinking. Learning by practicing it's done by first learning what is about, not vice versa. The focusing on learning by practice and lack of **"you need to remember that practice is one of the best ways [...] to make good products"** Sure... when? over 70 years ago when products and services where created without understanding the people that were using them? Good products and services are made because behavioral and cognitive psychology applied together with sociology and anthropology existed, created the human factors and hergonomics and human computer interactions. There are the roots of UX... None of them went into the field learning by practicing, they all first had an understanding of their doing. **"The concepts change, human behavior shifts and technology evolves, so active learning (work + study) is still the best way to go imo**" Human behavior change in realation about by the evolution of technology and societal norms. However, the fundamental cognitive processes that govern how humans interact with technology remain relatively stable, and this is where the scientific disciplines come into play and this is why you need to study this before jumping into devising a service or designing a product. This is why UX it's so powerfull, it has scientific basis that you learn by studying. **(work + study) is still the best way to go imo**" I never said that "work" needs to be removed, I said that you need to understand certain things before jump into UX/UI and, an I strongly reiterate it, you don't do that type of design challenges, cause without dummy content, they are pure crap and train a future UX Designer to start from the end of the process when you already know that you have to design an app that does this and that, instead that from the root causes that led to devise such solution.
