For the short answer, become business minded in your music and branch out to many different avenues that allow you to use or increase your skill sets. I’m a professional musician with approx 5-6 good paying shows a month, I’m a music educator and composer during the week and most of the “long term” gigs seasonally come right after the other so I never have an “off season”. Keep track of all the money you make through music, even if it’s in your notes app and that’ll be a great starting point to see where you were and where you need to be in order to financially sound.

I gotta say that on the music scene here in Corpus Christi TX, you certainly CAN make a living off of gigs alone. It's a lot of work, but a solo artist working 4 nights a week at $250 a pop can make a living. And that's not counting tips either. You're not going to be rich, but you can support a living. But if you're in a band and dividing $500 between 5 people, you will not make a living, even at 4 shows a week. So... perspective.

Not everyone wants to become content creators. Many of us want to focus on the music.
@goczangabor244 ай бұрын
that's exactly the issue, though. you can, just don't expect to live on it. you only get to decide whether you want to do this or work a 9 to 5 (or a part time something depending on your gigging income). it's only the kind of the struggles you can choose, you can't eliminate the grind all together unfortunately, unless... you become super famous, but i guess there are more lottery winners around the globe than superstars

That’s the thing. My moms a real estate agents. She likes selling houses. But she needs a full marketing/content strategy to get clients who want to use her to buy houses. Just the nature of being your own business

@Joe Unfortunately, if you want to make it big in today's music industry. You'll have to be a content creator, businessman then an artist after.

Musicians teaching Musicians to play or make content to make Musicians to make Musicians to make content to make Musicians to make Musicians to make content to make Musicians to ..... but nobody is employing or venues to play to. Your own music is lost in the billions of songs on line that nobody is buying. I see plenty of people online who claim to be Musicians but actually they are 90% video editors and content creators. They are actually in the low end of the video business not music .

Great video! The fun part of music for me is to play live music. That should be one of the main goals of being a professional musician: to play music. Certainly the industry has changed and now they way to make money is through the strategies you mentioned... and yes, MJ is the goat! ✌

I'm adding value by immersing myself into A.I. vocal software for gospel songwriting. I'm building a catalog of solo songs and choir songs that match the albums I can transpose into midi files. There's no one on youtube I can find attempting this and I realize though there's no real interest in it now. There will come a time when clients will have need for someone to create demo's of their songs and I'll have a leg up.

I think all of that is great. I've done videos (learned to edit video during COVID), have a blog, organized multi band shows, learned to run sound, have a studio and recording gears, etc. Still struggling.

Thanks for sharing more useful ideas how to make a living and realizing your dreams of being rewarded as a full time musician. You can get more involved in social media contents (E.g. You tube) or doing more gigs to be noticed by others. I usually give music lessons to improve my musician skill knowledges and sometimes earn something good out of it. Hopefully one fine day our contributions to society will be recognized and then giving back your gifted talents to others who are starting on the same journey (just like me out there). You want to leave a legacy behind for others so your hard works and knowledges learned will not be wasted or forgotten as time passed by.

These videos are getting a bit ridiculous. Saying the same thing over and over... To put it bluntly: Music has NO VALUE so go become more valuable by doing stuff that is unrelated to music. That way you'll keep yourself busy while tricking yourself into believing that you're keeping your dream afloat. The POINT of being a musician is to be constantly playing live, writing and performing while avoiding the destitution of the countless bedroom musicians that follow these type of prescriptions. Any KZbin channel led by a successful touring musician who reveals the secrets of how he got to sell out venues?? Didn't think so ....

Your videos are good man but that stock footage doesn’t match your brand. It make sense when you are talking about specific people and then show their photo but the other stuff doesn’t match. You should thinking about capturing more B roll footage yourself. Maybe even B roll of your self doing the stuff you are explaining. I know that stuff takes more time but I think it would make your videos better.

Very well said. Someone can charge $100/gig by competing with the best price which is a race to the bottom and someone else with the same set of skills charge $10k because he understands value base pricing. Most musicians starve because they don’t understand that concept and just go with the “standard”
