I think one of the biggest things to track and generally pay attention to is how you *feel* after doing something like shopping. That is what has helped me change my own shopping habits. The more we buy the more we get a diminishing return on it...and if we already have a lot of something the diminishing return is huge. We don't get the same "buzz" or feeling of a real "improvement" in our lives if what we're buying is essentially redundant, and we have a sense of guilt knowing a purchase was basically pointless and only did us financial harm. We also might want to ask ourselves what we do with the item after buying it...if anything. It might be uncomfortable to be completely honest with ourselves over these things, but it's necessary to making better decisions. It makes it a lot easier to talk yourself out of a questionable purchase.

This is a great idea to ask ourselves what will happen to this right after I have it in my hand, what about in a week, in a month, etc.

My therapist is an addiction therapist. I've worked on habit tracking for years. I'm 13 years sober. We work on avoiding it first, just as you said. I would like to share some advice from my therapist that I use as a helpful tool. Time + money = addiction. Obviously, I'm talking about a recovery tool, but it might be useful for others. When I first started, I worked on one minute at a time, now with spending, and when maybe I'm having using thoughts, I've moved to a 24-hour wait or sometimes even a week!🎉🎉

It is great that you found a therapist that recognizes shopping addiction as an actual addiction, many do not. Thank you for sharing this recovery tool!

@BuyLessJess oh its not shopping addiction. But yes, it definitely could apply! Let me clarify, we do work on spending habits because I have a tendency to jump from addiction to addiction. So spending tools, just help nip that in the bud. Like I said, I've been sober for 13 years, but I want to keep improving

I have considerably decreased my consumption this year. I'm yet to fulfill my wish of a no buy month but I know for me it has to be a gradual change. Anyway, your videos are inspiring!

This video has such good info!! It needs way more views, maybe chop it up into shorts (I loved the habits talk that it removes critical thinking from the action)

Another awesome video, your content focusing on shopping habits has been the most helpful in my journey. It's true, a lot is tied up in shame and subconscious coping mechanisms. That advice of "don't do it" is bound to fail because the mind doesn't hear "don't" s.

Glad to hear you've been enjoying my videos 💗Yeah, I think it can work in a pinch, but not a good strategy to lean on beyond that

Re: saying in your mind « don’t do it », I have to agree. I know that there is one specific youtuber that triggers me and if I watch her content I’ll be buying one of her recs within the trimester. I still want to watch her videos. I also like to « curate » shopping carts or pinterest boards of wishlists even if I know that it will eventually lead to me buying what’s on those. I have a few triggers : being bored or doing a task I don’t want to do, and feeling bad/during PMS. On those instances I go directly to those wishlists and pick the thing I want the most and in this instant it feels like a great decision because if it’s here it means I’ve wanted it for a while so it’s not an impulse ! Nope, that’s just my misguided brain talking nonsense. I’m considering deleting all the boards, because if I’m triggering by boredom or sadness, I don’t want to search for things to buy, I want a quick dopamine hit.
